There's a HUGE back story. Short version: Michelle, young blonde, was married to John Phillips at the age 18(blue shirt), (he left his wife for her after he met her at age of 16). Mama Cass Eliot (white boots) was in love with the other guy, Denny Doherty but it wasn't reciprocated. Eventually Michelle and Denny had an affair that broke Mama Cass' heart, and the band eventually split up over all of this.

Michelle and John Phillips were married in 1962, he's the one in the blue shirt, she's the one on the far left. Mama Cass is the other female singer and Denny Doherty is the other male - he and Mama Cass are deceased. John is the father of Mackenzie Phillips (actress) and John and Michelle are the parents of Chynna Phillips (singer/songwriter) of the Wilson Phillips group who is married to William Baldwin (actor, Baldwin family of Steven et al). The Wilson's women in the Wilson Phillips group are daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys.

When they were putting the group together they started with John and Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty, the other guitarist. The last to join was Cass Elliot, who had been in the band The Mugwumps with Doherty. PBS produced a music special, "California Dreamin': The Songs of the Mamas and the Papas," which has some history and archival interviews. John Philips died in 2001, Denny Doherty in 2007, and Cass Elliot, much too young, in 1974. Only Michelle is still with us.

What memories..... I was born in LA, and lived in So. Calif. all of my life. The winter I was about 25, I found myself in Kansas with one of the worst winters since the 1880s. I had never lived in snow. Heck I probably had only been in snow 4 or 6 times in my life. California Dreaming was popular and it sort of became my mantra. I missed my family, I missed the Inland Empire and the lower desert, think Riverside and Palm Springs. I used to swear if I ever got back to Palm Springs I would never complain about sand again (there was a lot of it in the 50's and 60's), and I didn't.

Denny was from Halifax, John & Cass East Coast, and Michelle, who wrote the lyrics to this song, was from California. The original lyric written by Michelle was "Well I got down on my knees, and I pretend to pray". But Cass somehow misheard or misunderstood, and initially sang it, including on the recording, as "...I began to pray..." until Michelle explained the correct lyric to her. Then Cass started singing the correct lyric as written when they were on tour.

The Mamas & the Papas organized the Monterey Pop festival in 1967, where Janis Joplin made her first public debut singing Ball & Chain. You can see Mama Cass in the audience being overwhelmed by Janis. at the end of the song, you can see Cass saying Wow! At 16 in 1970, my step sister and I ran away from Toledo, OH and made it to the 1970 Monterey Fest with plans to see Janis, but she was found dead 2 weeks before.

John Phillips is the father of Mackenzie Phillip's the actress. There is quite a rabbit hole with this group. The song " I Saw Her Again Last Night" will tell you a lot about what happened within the group. Also there is an editing mistake that sounded great, so they left it in the final release! Love there music 🎶!

The Mamas and the Papas were formed by husband and wife John Phillips (formerly of the New Journeymen) and Michelle Phillips, and Denny Doherty (formerly of the Mugwumps). Both of these earlier acts were folk groups active in 1964 and 1965. The last member to join was Cass Elliot, Doherty's bandmate in the Mugwumps, who had to overcome John Phillips' concern that her voice was too low for his arrangements, that her physical appearance would be an obstacle to the band's success and that her temperament was incompatible with his (Elliot struggled with obesity all her life, and felt deeply insecure about her looks). The group considered calling itself the Magic Cyrcle before switching to the Mamas and the Papas, inspired by the Hells Angels, whose female associates were called "mamas". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mamas_and_the_Papas

Now that I have been here for 20 years, our current temps. in the 60's feels frigid. I don't know how I ever endured those -10/-20 degree winter temps. Take care and be well. Peace.

Michelle was married to John. The band was in the islands and down to their last dollars. John woke up one night and woke Michelle up. "Help me write down this song I dreamed, while it's still in my head!" he exclaimed. "No, let me sleep." - she mumbled. "I'll give you half the songwriting credits!" And Michelle Philips is still cashing fat checks, to this day, for California Dreaming.

The line up, from left to right: Michelle Phillips, Cass Elliot, John Phillips (with the guitar), & Denny Doherty. Michelle and John were married just before they formed the group. Both Michelle and Cass, however, quickly developed heavy crushes on Denny. While Denny didn't return Cass's feelings, he did with Michelle. There was an affair, a divorce, and the group eventually broke up after their (I think) third album. Cass had a successful solo career until her untimely demise. Michelle went into acting and is currently the only surviving member of the group.

The thin one(Michelle) was married to the guitar player John Phillips (he is also the father of 'American Graffiti' film and television sitcom 'One Day at a Time' actress Mackenzie Phillips). But no they were not related. The origin for the name of the group is as follows: "We're all just lying around vegging out watching TV and discussing names for the group. The New Journeymen(previous group) was not a handle that was going to hang on this outfit. John was pushing for the Magic Cyrcle, but none of us could come up with anything better, then we switch the channel and, hey, it's the Hells Angels on the Johnny Carson show... And the first thing we hear is: "Now hold on there, Hoss. Some people call our women cheap, but we just call them our Mamas." Cass jumped up: "Yeah! I want to be a Mama." And Michelle is going: "We're the Mamas! We're the Mamas!" OK. I look at John. He's looking at me going: "The Papas?" Problem solved."
