There is a live black and white version from the 60's where you really get to see and hear Smokey in his prime. The sweetest voice ever put on record. I had the great pleasure in seeing Smokey Robinson and The Miracles 5 times in the early and middle 60's. Unforgettable voice, unforgettable performer.

So agree. If you love Smokey (& The Miracles) you have to see the live black n white video of them singing OOh Baby Baby. You'll get chills by this performance. Smokey poured all his emotions into that song. I thought nothing could top the studio recording but I was wrong. Of course I love the Righteous Brothers. Bro Bobby Hatfield (blonde tenor) has a grip of solos out there where his vocals are off the chain like you heard when he sang Unchained Melody live on the Andy Williams TV show. Finally ck out the 106 yr old Irish song "Oh Danny Boy" sung by Jackie Wilson live in 1958 on a TV show, That black n white video captures a chill wrenching peformance so soulfully it will blow you away.

@@pharamathews5152 I too agree. I would add watching a young Johnny Mathis singing "It's Not For Me to Say", Jackie Wilson singing "Lonely Teardrops", Nat King Cole doing "Nature Boy", and Frank Sinatra doing "Fly Me To The Moon". All live, all in black and white, all classic. Also listen to Ella Fitzgerald doing "Cry Me A River", although that isn't a live performance.

@@helgar791 All great choices. I did see "Lonely Teardrops" video. I will check out the other videos you mentioned. Thinking of Johnny Mathis & his buttery voice...I remember as a child sitting on the living room floor mesmerized by him & his singing on a TV show. I kept looking at his twinkling eyes & gorgeous looks while hearing his voice. I called out to my mom that I think God decided to create the most beautiful person he could and I'm looking at him right now. :)

@@pharamathews5152 Agreed. Toward the end of "Cry Me A River" Ella says, "Ray, remember all that you said". Ella had been in a long term relationship with Ray Brown, the bassist on the entire "Clap Hand Here Comes Charlie" album from which this is from (I highly recommend listening to the entire album. Her "My Reverie" kills), which had recently ended. She really felt that song, and that line shows. However, look up how Nat got the song "Nature Boy" from the first hippie, Eden Ahbez.

THE MIRACLES, were Motown’s FIRST and MOST IMPORTANT GROUP. It was THEIR SUCCESS that gave MOTOWN RECORDS their FIRST MILLION SELLING HIT RECORD with the 1960 GRAMMY HALL OF FAME SMASH, *SHOP AROUND* …and They went on to have over 50 CHART HITS…and won numerous music industry awards. THE MIRACLES’ success paved the way for ALL FUTURE MOTOWN STARS…including The Supremes, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Four Tops, The Jackson Five, and many others. THE MIRACLES are: SMOKEY ROBINSON, CLAUDETTE ROGERS-ROBINSON, RONNIE WHITE, BOBBY ROGERS, PETE MOORE, and MARV TARPLIN. ALL SIX are in THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. THE MIRACLES also have MORE SONGS inducted into The Grammy Hall of Fame than ANY OTHER MOTOWN GROUP. See “The Miracles” in Wikipedia.

One day when you got time listen to this song again and check out the violins as well as all the instruments. Here is a list of some Smokey songs with the Miracles as well as solo songs. The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage, Doggone Right, Here I Go Again, Swept For You Baby, Much Better Off, We've Come To Far Too End It Now, Satisfaction. Some solo songs; The Agony and The Ecstasy, Daylight and Darkness, I've Made Love To You A Thousand Times, Just To See HerQuiet Storm, Virgin Man, Baby Come Close this a just a few of a very long list . Oh my. Brought me way back to my high school days. I remember playing his Quiet Storm album for hours. If you want to hear a romantic, goose bumps song, listen to Baby Come Close. I can remember being in class just humming the line "Turn the lights down low, baby come close"....such great mememories. I was lucky enough to see him 3 times in a small concert venue in San Carlos, Ca. The old Circle Star Theater is now torn down. Smokey could melt you. Man or women it did not matter, as your reaction to this song showed. Everyone has a crush on Smokey. Thank you for playing a really good memory making song. kzread.info/dash/bejne/c62elJujf7LelJs.html

Absolutely! That is my favorite. Cruisin is great as others have suggested, but if you really want to turn up the heat ‘Baby Come Close’ will do that. ‘Cruisin’ is foreplay, ‘Baby Come Close’ will take you all the way. Well, it wouldn’t hurt to throw in a little Isley Brothers as well.

Smokey is one of the all-time greats! He wrote almost all of the songs for Motown!
