This entire album is what got millions of us through jr/high school. It's dark, painful, depressing. There's no answers. It's just a call from the dark for something, somebody, anybody to help. But it's cathartic. It's like someone sitting with you in/through your pain. There's solace and solidarity in it. You're not alone because there's someone else out there feeling it too. Hell, I'm a 41 year old, happy, well-adjusted adult tearing up over the bittersweet memories.

You hit the nail on the head. I remember listening to their music and thinking "I guess I am not alone, because someone wrote this song, and it sounds like I feel." Their music helped me feel less alone, and that helped me survive to get help.

The lyrics to almost every Linkin Park song hits differently after learning of Chester's battle with depression that ultimately led to his death. It was like a career filled with music that was a cry for help. It's a very sad way to think of their music, but it's all there in the words. I think I enjoy the music in a different way now, like he shared his battle with us, even if we didn't pick up on it at the time. RIP Chester. I hope you have found peace.

I agree with you, especially Good Goodbye on the final album of theirs. Or the final album? And then Mike Shinoda goes on to put our the song called Over Again, talking about that song too. "Sometimes it feels like we say goodbye over and over and over again."

@@PenneySounds While this is true, it's also important to know that Chester must have had some input, at least I am pretty sure he did. I don't think it's just a coincidence that he was fighting depression and a lot of the song lyrics just happen to involve such things. It's either that or Chester was a heavy influence for the lyrics Mike wrote.

  • @Wyndigayle

@@SilvyReacts I was thinking the same thing. I know that Mike wrote most of the lyrics, but the band was a family. They shared the struggle of being those who had to witness Chester's battle, and I feel that the lyrics reflected that.

@@midnytemassacre The issue is there are many artists that write songs like this that don't have depression. So it's not so easy to just assume that is the case based on lyrics. Chester struggled most of his adult life with depression and substance abuse. He said once in an interview that a big inspiration for him was Chris Cornell and when Chris committed suicide, Chester spiraled into a really bad depression and committed suicide a few month later. On his twitter fans of Linkin Park shared how their music helped them in their struggles with depression, gave their condolences and shared their stories about friends who lost their battles with depression. His widow has kept his twitter up and encourages fans to share their stories about how Linkin Park's music has helped with their struggles with depression, saying that if it helps just one person who is struggling with depression to not feel alone and not take that ultimate step into self-harm, then that is a victory,no matter how small.

Yes, LP hits way different when you know Chester killed himself. We all knew he had some form of depression but figured this was his outlet and he'd be fine in the end(no pun intended). Don't think anyone knew how bad it really was in his head, even though he did mention that no one wanted to be in his head. That it was a bad place to be

@@wyldcardsam Completely understandable. But I think it's beautiful because their art, and his expression of it, succeeded in doing exactly what they set out to do: to bare emotions, states of mind, and insecurities. And it's done to hopefully reach others who connect to it. If your statement is true (and I'm confident it is, for clarity's sake), then your being with us means he accomplished what he and the band intended: to hopefully reach those who may be helped by their message. As much of a shame it is he's no longer with us, it's poetically beautiful that he reached someone enough to save them from something he couldn't escape himself. I can only imagine there's at least one other person who they may have helped steer away from the edge....all the way to potentially thousands of people. That's incredible to consider. I see it as it was better for all to have had his contributions out in the world, than to have never have known them at all. While I don't know you, I'm glad you're still here for those reasons.. 😁

Songs about struggles and depression and mental issues are so important. When you're in that kind of place, you tend to reject help from the people around you because they're not in the same place you are and there's a lack of understanding. It's like a man giving advice on how to cope with pregnancy, it doesn't feel credible or genuine so it's hard to take seriously. But these songs, they meet you where you are and let you know they understand what you're going through. They get past the walls we put up and talk to people who otherwise can't be reached.

I was going through a horrible childhood and Linkin Park was the main thing that got me through it. As dark as their music could be, there was a strength in the solidarity and understanding. And with A Thousand Suns there was a great healing as it came out when I was starting to escape and improve my mental health. Chester reached and saved so many people with his music, it broke my heart to learn that he lost his fight after getting so many of us through ours. I'll never forget him, he will always have a special place in my heart. RIP Chester ❤️

The first album Hybrid Theory had some rougher songs. The music video had some odd imagery. I love it. Later albums had a different tone.

So sad, we as a people lost one of the real great vocalists, and genuine people in Chester. R.I.P. Unfortunately he took his own life in 2017 I believe. But reaction or not, this groups catalogs should be on anyone's playlist.

Fun fact about this song. This song is a blending of two songs, One Step Closer from the album Hybrid Theory, and 1stp Klosr from the album Reanimation. The majority of the song (musically is the biggest difference) is from Hybrid Theory. However, the lyrics "These are the places where I can feel torn from my body" all the way till "and pouring" is actually sung by Jonathan Davis from Korn, which is in the Reanimation version of the song. This era of Linkin Park is what I love the most. All of Linkin Park's music is wonderful, but Hybrid Theory, Reanimation, Meteora and Live in Texas all came out during a difficult time in my life. Hybrid Theory especially hits me the most, not just because it was the first but since it touches more on the anger side of things as opposed to the depressed. Songs like this one was comforting to know I wasn't alone in my thoughts and feelings, and being able to sing and scream along to this when I had the opportunity to be alone was very cathartic. Back in the days of downloading videos, I would download all of the concerts I could find of Linkin Park. I had this exact one on my computer, and loved to watch it. The little changes they made to the live performances made it so enjoyable to watch, and their energy made it work.

Fun fact: they re-wrote the song like 6 times, because they couldn't get the words they wanted. They actually wrote the lyrics about their producer because they were so frustrated/mad about him pressuring them.

One thing to note is that the change in tone (both musically and lyrically) at the end is because they've incorporated a verse from a remix of the song into the live performance. On the remix, Jonathan Davis of Korn was featured with his own verse, so his lyrics are somewhat darker than Chester's own were. I love this version of the song. The original is superb and the remix is amazing, and this live performance meshes the two perfectly.

The thing with LP is that the Lyrics are written by Linkin Park and they hit hard with so many people because so many of us have felt those lyrics at one point or another in life. It's actually uplifting and empowering to turn on LP and just scream out all that negative crap with Chester..kind of like therapy.. Chester saved a lot of people singing/screaming these lyrics..#ripchester

It was a whole different world to see them live. I was extremely lucky to be on the floor, in the pit, during the 2003 Summer Sanitarium tour when they opened for Metallica. Imagine that - Linkin Park AND Metallica in one show. I believe it was Robert Trujillo’s first tour with Metallica as their new bassist (someone correct me if I’m wrong). We pushed to the front of the stage and it was like nothing else I’ve ever experience. I am still not over losing Chester. His voice was singular.

I sit here, alone, in my Ford Explorer, at 1:56am...and all I keep thinking is it's such a fucking SHAME that such a brilliant, articulate, gorgeous young dude couldn't find a way to still the lying voices in his head. He simply wasn't strong enough to beat the insidious disease of depression. Or he WAS strong... for as long as he COULD BE...but ultimately depression won. Valiant though he was...Chester...we MISS you, we LOVE you, we THANK you...but we can never BLAME you. Here's hoping you finally found what you needed and wanted...so much so that you fucked that hateful disease and are actively laughing in its FACE... wherever you may be.
