"Collision Course" by Linkin Park & Jay-Z was MTV's 1st lineup for a new series of rap/rock mash-ups. It was also the last - they crushed it SO HARD, no one wanted to follow it up. LP & Jay toured the mega festivals w/it. Did Live Aid 2008. The DVD starts with Mike Shinoda, the multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, rapper, producer, & low key creative genius of LP, sitting behind the boards. He explains the concept to the cameras, then says, "But this isn't gonna be a series, because what they don't know is I've been making mash-ups exactly like this since high school - it's what I did to get into the music biz. And it's the thing I do better than anyone else. No one will be able to follow this." Jay-Z comes in, kinda nonplussed about the whole deal, until Shinoda plays him a few samples, and he hears the singular FORCE OF NATURE that is Chester Bennington's voice - one minute a feral scream of anguish, trauma, pain - the next, soaring with such purity and beauty it takes the breath away from 50K+ people all at once. Rest easy - we miss you, Chester. And we're still making you proud, dude.

Both "Encore" and "Numb" were hit singles in their own right. The remix/combination of the two at the time was shocking because they were so different and it was even more shocking how well they worked together. This was one of the foundations for Linkin Park to become insanely popular and well known to the point where it's strange for anyone under the age of 35 to not know them.

If I remember correctly this was a pop up concert that MTV put together. They did a bunch of mashups of LP and Jay Z songs. They released an EP of it called Collision Course. It’s definitely better if you’ve heard each artists song independently before you hear the mashup.

I could feel the goosebumps all the way up my arms and and the tightness in my chest. Losing Chester was for me probably the most jarring loss of a musical icon to date. People talk about when Lennon was killed with deep reverence. That was before my time, but I imagine they felt the same way I did when I heard that Chester has passed.

    1) I think listening to both original songs first helps to appreciate the mashup album more 2) I think the other live performance they do is better, Chester really lets it rip in that one 3) The album version of all these mashups are fantastic and the short album is definitely worth the listen. Great reaction as always!

💯 I remember going into it thinking Mike Shinoda's a talented guy. Jay-Z walks in thinking the same thing. Then Shinoda blows your - and more importantly, Jay-Z's - mind with his next level creative genius and ability to do/play everything like it's no big deal. He's this low key, sweet, grounded dude with zero ego. Like if you didn't watch the beginning of the DVD, you'd probably never know the extent to which Shinoda is responsible for the success of this project or LP, and the man could not care less as long as everyone's having a good time. All this absolutely inspired Jay-Z's genuinely inspired performance - you watch him settle into the intimate energy of a club that might be smaller than any venue he's performed in for a decade, if at all - Oh AND he records his verses in one take (WHAT!!!) TL, DR: Same here, my dude!

Man the early 2000s were a time for music discovery and in particular my sense of musical path, Gorillaz Dog Dayz album, LP's phenomenal Hybrid Theory (which really spoke to me more so now than ever), but to have it be boosted by Jay-Z with Encore was just mindfuckery to my youthful ears. RHCP, Foo Fighters, Evanescence. Avril Lavigne, pre Payphone (everything from Adam during to after just felt too standardized) Maroon5, U2 ('It's not a hill its a mountain' is probably their last good song, haven't heard much from dear old Bono since), of course Chris Cornell's many hats, Arctic Monkeys, Stereophonics, Razorlight, The Hooziers, and the usual suspects like Queen, AC/DC Pink Floyd and so on... Even Nickleback (I unironically like them and most of their stuff). but those bands have laid a foundation of music that's sprawled and connected me to different genres and peoples from Jazz, to Blues to Latin(a), to international with German metal and rock, to Japanese everything, back to my Scottish history with my Irish Cousins in folk strings and lines. Music is a weapon that binds us to each other and to history. It is my religion as I pick up my guitar to strum along with these vids.

This concert was just the fans from their fan clubs. Half the audience was Jay-Z fans (200 fans) and the other half was Linkin Park fans (200 fans). The fans had no idea that the other artist would be there. The Jay Z fans took cues from Linkin Park fans on how to react to Linkin Park songs and the Linkin Park fans did the same as well. This was a "small" concert for both artists and they liked it because they could interact with the fans more than a normal concert that has about 30,000 fans at it. The biggest concert Linkin Park did was I think 150,000 but not sure.

Fun fact, Linkin park sent out an email to thw people in their fan club saying they were working on a new project, asking who was some of their fans favorite artists. Anyone who said Jay-Z were invited to the show this video was from. Super awesome.

i don't get why people always request the live version. I mean I get its impressive, but anything mixed always sounds better than raw vocals.

I feel like you’re sleeping on Jay. Is Nas better, maybe, but debatable, and Jay can WRITE. One of the best lyricists of all time as well as one of the best most clear and audible live rappers of all time.

I feel like more of what he's referring to, especially by mentioning Nas/Ether after Jay's line about who's fresher, is how Jay's style changed in the early part of his career. Before Reasonable Doubt came out in '95, the singles Jay was featured on were of the speedy, double time verses. That was definitely a part of what Rap was like at the time, but Nas played a big part in flipping that on it's head with Illmatic in April '94. Half-time, laid-back flow. Part of it more than likely was beat selection as well, but if you listen to that Big Daddy Kane tune Show & Prove (which came out later in '94) you can hear Jay's flow starting to switch up a little bit. It was a little more laid back with some double time mixed in from time to time. By the time Reasonable Doubt came out you could hear the Nas influence in the flow. If people wanted to get deeper about flows and influence they could obviously bring up Eric B & Rakim, LL Cool J, KRS-One, Jungle Brothers and how they did things in the late 80's to early 90's. You are right though, it is debatable and they have been connected through that debate most of their careers. Jay is an incredible writer, as is Nas. I have no horse in the race either way, I just like Hip-Hop. Then again, I could be completely wrong in my interpretation. Ha. Have a glorious day sir.
