Kenny actually started with the New Christy Minstrels. It was a large group of singers that came and left over time. Kenny left to join The First Edition. Lucille and Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town are 2 of the songs he sang and played guitar on. He eventually left them to have a solo career. Kenny had a big career singing country songs. But with the song, Lady, he crossed over genres and became a huge star. Kenny Rogers could tell a story with a song better than almost anyone I've ever heard. Glad you're willing to go back a few years. If you're taking suggestions, try Society's Child, by then teenager Janis Ian. The lyrics are amazing. Keep up the good work!

I first saw Kenny Rogers when he was with The First Edition. They had a TV show in the early 1970s called "Rollin' on the River". It was filmed in Toronto, Ontario, Canada - I don't know if it ever ran in the U.S. He put out a couple of albums with them and one of my favourites of their songs was "One Lonely Room".

Ruby! Kenny and 1st edition! I saw Eddie money, Kenny rogers and Bob hope on same ticket in 80's in muskegon, mi. What a show! Love your reactions! Peace from Northern Michigan.

I just saw an interview with the producer of this song. Kenny did NOT want to sing it. The producer insisted, Kenny told him, I will sing it once. Once was all it took, it was the first single offered from the album, it topped the country charts, crossed over to the Pop charts, and poor Kenny was stuck singing it for years and years at concerts. But this song made Kenny Rogers a big star as a solo artist.

One of Kenny's more underrated songs was Planet Texas. Just one of many great Texans that showed love to our beloved Lone Star State. The video is available and I recommend it if you can find a good quality version.

My brother-in-law, at the time just my girlfriend's brother, was making an animated short film for his college art project and he asked me to write the screenplay for it. While we were working on it and ironing out the kinks, damned if this song didn't come out and wouldn't you know it, it basically had all of our elements so he had to come up with something totally different for his project so it wouldn't look like he plagiarized the song. He was PISSED, but I had to laugh. What were the odds of that happening?
