Sometimes live versions distract from the meaning of the lyrics with the added graphics and words. This is one of those songs that the studio version is needed for a true reaction.

Totally true. And, I'm sure the audience would have had fun singing this together at a Karaoke bar, but I'm equally sure they came to this Kenny Rogers concert to hear Kenny Rogers sing all his songs himself, not lead them in singing this like he was the choir director instead of the performer.

Agree!!! This was a huge hit for Kenny, and this video doesn't do it justice.

I don't like live versions it takes away from the song.
You two are so beautiful together and have such Awesomely Beautiful souls, as well. Thanks for being here!
"You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, four hungry children and a crop in the field. I've had some bad times, lived through some sad times, but this time your hurtin' won't heal, You picked a fine time to leave me, Lucille."
This is one of those songs you need to hear the studio version to get the full meaning.
My Daddy loved this song when I was younger. Hit home for us when our Mom left us.
Wow! When started off with on top of old smokey it brougt to mind my very first memory, my mother holding me on her lap and singing that to me 74 years ago, I didnt think anyone knew that song,
I have to tell this story back in the 70s at my grandmother's restaurant she had a jukebox and on the jukebox was this song you've picked a fine Time to Leave Me Lucille we had a cook his wife's name was Lucille remember this is in Oklahoma small town and Lucille left him she left him with four kids the only job he had was to cook at my grandmother's restaurant she left him for another man and he came out and kept putting his quarters in the jukebox and this song played over and over, you picked a fine Time to Leave Me Lucille. true story.
I'll never forget on a Sunday morning in Primary, the chorister asked for a favorite song, expecting a gospel primary song, and a seven year old boy raised his hand and requested they sing "You Picked a Fine Time to Leave Me, Lucille". That was about 1977. Hilarious!
When I first heard this I thought it was saying 400 children and rocks in the field - I would have left too!
There was a joke after this came out about a dancer who made it to the finals of a dance competition but was eliminated when her shoe broke. The punch line was "You picked a fine time to leave me loose heel!"

If you've ever watched NASCAR, announcer (and former driver) Darrell Waltrip also famously said, "You picked a fine time to leave me, loose wheel" when one of the tires came off of a racecar.

You guys made my night... I grew up listening to my mother playing Kenny Rogers and you just brought me back!!! I'm subbed!
Saw Kenny in concert a long time ago. It was great. Through the Years is a great song of his and so is She Believes in Me.

Two of my favorite Kenny hits!!! I saw him in concert once too!
As a kid and still to this day this is one of my favorite songs of all time. I was born and raised in Toledo, still live here, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever to hear my hometown in a big country song. Love watching your reactions.
This brings back such good memories. I was a young 20 something year old cocktail waitress in a country bar with a dj playing the music. Everytime he played this song, all us waitresses would stop what we were doing and sing the chorus line! Good times!
One of best sing-a-long beer drinking song around, this was of Kenny's best. Great reaction 🍺🍺
Please Please react to "She believes in me” it’s one of Kenny’s BEST!! ❤
I loved Kenny Rogers and saw him in concert over 20 times. He did that same schtick at every concert with the chastising the audience for swaying and the Ray Charles comment. Every show!! lol
you have to listen to the studio virsion

I agree. As funny as this liver version was, they need to listen to the original studio version.

Yes you must listen to the studio version as you missed the most important part as the audience was singing and you couldn't hear the husband say "You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, with four hungry children and a crop in the field". Lucille is abandoning her 4 children to trip the light fantastic as they say.
I love Ruben James . It's Beautiful!
Another big hit
Kenny does a great cover of the Eagles, Desperado. Sweet Music Man and Reuben James are 2 more great songs by him
Dedicate this to my cousin Scott. I'm willing to bet it was his Lucille that sent him on his way before his time.
It's funny you said that they should make a movie from this song because they DID make tv movies from two of his songs and he starred in all the movies. His song song THE GAMBLER actually had 5 movies in all. Also his song COWARD OF THE COUNTY was made into a movie but just one on that, there were no sequels.
love the reaction guys! but "STUDIO VERSION" " STUDIO VERSION" all day long and night more heart wrenching this is a great song. ; )
I'm sure the audience would have had fun singing this together at a karaoke bar, but I'm equally sure they came to this Kenny Rogers concert to hear Kenny Rogers sing all his songs himself, not lead them in singing (poorly singing, at that) like he was the choir director instead of the performer. His own performance, if he was trying, would have been as good as the studio version -- he's that good of a live performer.
Let's waltz along with Kenny.
This is the first song any of us remember hearing from Kenny haha! (As a solo artist, anyway) Memories!
I add to the others that are suggesting The Greatest by Kenny Rogers. It's the ultimate story song, that will put a smile on your face, at the end.
We grew up changing the words to this song to.. "You Picked A Fine Time To Leave Me Loose Wheel."..LOL
Some songs you JUST HAVE TO SWAY TO!!!
Very funny story, I heard this back when I was young and I actually thought he was saying 400 children cropping the fields..lol
My brother and I used to change the lyrics from "crops in the field" to "some sores that won't heal" haha! good memories watching this video! Thanks
I went to a KR concert in 93 , Kenney is a real comical guy on stage.
THERE IS A SEQUEL TO IT, TITLED: "LUCILLE'S ANSWER" PERFORMED BY ELZE ROSE.
Never seen your show before. Came up bc I wanted a Kenny rogers song 😅 but I appreciate your positivity and y’all have a blessed day as well❤
You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille With four hungry children and a crop in the field
I was 9 years old when this dong was released. Our neughbor when she was drunking would play this record on repeat for hours full blast so we would know she was drunk already because the song was playing lol..
She left him with 4 hungry children & a crop in the field. Then the guy she picked up couldn't come thru, because he couldn't get her hubby's words out of his head.
Good music
I like how you say “oh Nellie”
Another "Cheating" song which is a staple of country music.
You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel. Four hundred children and a box of oatmeal.
Agree. Still loving you guys you really get involved. Listen to Dan Vasc metal singer performs Amazing Grace. BEAUTIFUL!! Nana Karen. UK x
I saw Kenny live in Saginaw MI ..
You will love ‘Rueben James’ by Kenny ❤
The studio version is good too.
Gotta hear the studio version
Such a great song
YOU GUYS SHOULD WATCH COWARD OF COUNTY AND THE GAMBLER THE MOVIES KENNY IS IN BOTH AS WELL AS SIMGS THE SONGS.
Need to listen to "Love Will Turn You Around" by Kenny. It's another good one 👍
The title is actually simply "LUCILLE".

I wonder if this was actually written with the idea of being an answer song to Little Richard's Lucille.
They did make a movie from this song . Watch it
As Negan raised the bat, Glenn looked at it and said, "You picked a fine time to beat me Lucille. One pregnant wife, the dead walking the fields."
His first single was under the name Kenneth rogers. But the announcer asked him: it’s Kenny rogers right? Kenny said no it’s Kenneth. But the announcer went out and announced him as Kenny rogers anyway. All the cheering squealing women saying his name Kenny. He decided “I can live with Kenny!”
This song is about my hometown of toledo ohio

You ought to listen to George Jones' She's my rock
His best early song is " Don't Take Your Love To Town ". Highly recommend. You two are great. 🙂
Wrong version, watch the studio version of this song, it hits much different, the other version is much sadder and meaningful!

True
Don't feel like by your reaction you actually caught the words ... this is so sad and heartbreaking she broke her big strong loving husband down she left him "with 4 hungry children and a crop in the field"
You need to check out sherri jericho answer to this. "Thanks for leaving Lucille.
the Gambler is a good one too
Us kids thougbt it was 400 children🤣🤣🤣
Please play the temptations its growing thank you
You guy's got distracted he went and found Lucille in bar with the other guy poured his heart out and the man she was with could not hold her.
Kenny had many great songs. Coward of the County, Country Bumpkin, The Gambler just to name a few. They all tell a story. But in many ways the studio versions are better to get the full effect of the songs.

Are you sure Kenny covered Country Bumpkin? It was made famous by Cal Smith and I never heard it by Kenny Rogers.
Omg give a head phone warning for the wife’s voice!!!
Try country bumpkin
Please listen to the studio version. This live version loses so much!
What did the skater say when he fell off his board? You picked a fine time to leave me loose wheel.
I hate mama’s that leave their babies.
Englebert Humperdinck is worth listening to his song Please Release Me
When u realize it's not a happy song so real
Four hungry children and a crop in the field
4 hungry children and a crop on the field! Really Lucille?! You know Karma is looking for her😅
Wow😲 of course he couldn't she was a another man's wife👰 🥺
She didn,t even give her 4 hungrey children a second thought. Not only is she a bad wife but a rottten mother. I can understand having a mental breakdown with having a hard farmers' wife life, but even if you feel so strongly that you need to get away and have some time than you one plan how your children are going tp be cared for while your husband is bringing in the crops, also, it does not mean you have the right to just go to a bar and leave with someone you don t know and go into a hotel room with that streigthinger, there is no excuse for that. She doesn t know who this man is or where he lives or if he has a wife but he is just caught up in a susaraction he will regret but has the mind set of takeing advantage of the moment.
Soo sad... she walked out on him with 4 hungry children and crops in the field
Wish he wouldn't have interfered .. Please listen to the original....
Another sad song. She is not just a wife, she is also a mother of 4. How can she just walk away from them? Having a farm acquires hard work. She knew that when she married that man. Now she decides she doesn't want that life anymore. That is so selfish. How can a mother leave her children behind. That really ticks me off. How is the man going to cope now.
Wrong version. Listen to the studio version.
The studio version of this one is probably better. You would really enjoy Ruben James by Kenny Rogers and the First edition kzread.info/dash/bejne/aoCoyqiiYreaeM4.html
Seeing as you like oldies like this one then try this one..."Sealed With A Kiss" ...kzread.info/dash/bejne/k4Jsl9icaKezh7Q.html
Studio version much better..the live one took the seriousness away of the story💞✌️
This is precisely why I hate reactions to live performances. The audio sucks, or the performance itself is bad, or (in this case) the artist stops singing in favor of the audience. It's great when you're IN the audience, not for much else though.
Great performance, terrible version of the song I mean this is a tragic song, this family has disintegrated she has walked out on her family this is a sad song and your laughing. Now it's not your fault, this is a fun light hearted performance he's having fun but you need to listen to the studio version where you can really hear the pain tp really feel the impact of this song
I have to admit I’m not going to watch this. I hate live versions for the first reactions. Audience too loud, stage show antics, and the artist rarely sings it the way they did on the studio version. I want reactors to hear the songs the way “we all” heard it in our more formative years…or younger years.😢
I think you picked the wrong version of this song. It's kind of hard to understand the story when Kenny keeps making jokes
This isn't the best performance of this song.
prob the worst rendition of this song i have ever heard
