George Strait doesn't just sing about being a cowboy, he lives the life. Strait, along with his son Bubba, is a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). Strait and his brother Buddy started the George Strait Team Roping Classic competition.

"I'll be looking for 8 when they pull that gate." That comes from the 8 seconds needed to stay on a bull. This song was THE rodeo song played for every high school rodeo or county fairs events in the Southern US in the 80s and 90s.

This is George Strait’s signature song. One of the most iconic rodeo songs ever. One of the most dangerous sports on the planet. Not a question of whether you are going to get hurt, just a question of when. Searching for 8 refers to the fact that you have to stay on for a minimum of 8 seconds to have a qualified ride. Hope that judge ain’t blind refers to the fact that a judge vives a rating for the ride sort of like gymnastics or ice skating at the Olympics. Most rodeo riders don’t make a lot of money. You have to pay an entrance fee, for all your own equipment and all your expenses. The riders get paid on a sliding scale sort of like they do in golf. A piece of the overall prize money. You don’t have to win first to get some prize money, But only those who consistently place high make a lot of money. Few rodeo riders get rich. Rodeo riders also have a reputation for relationship problems. Being away from home so much, financial insecurity, and danger of injury play havoc on relationships. George has competed in team calf roping and sponsors a team roping Classic each year. He also owns a working ranch near San Antonio, where he raises cattle and horses. George has over 50 # 1 releases, more than any other artist in history. Hé one of the most prolific country singers in the business.

And, not just when but how many times. I've known bull riders that have forgotten how many and which bones they have broken. I suspect arthritis is a major issue for retired bull-riders.

You are so right about George’s voice. A couple of suggestions (since I’m a Texas girl); “All My Exes Live in Texas” and “I Cross My Heart”. It’ so hard to name just two, but I will ‘til next time :) You might look up a list of his greatest hits and after you have reacted to so many, you could listen to him all day. :) i haven’t ever done any rodeo stuff, but my grand dad was a REAL cowboy. He would have turned 100 in 2006, so he was a cowboy way back. He ran away from home at 14 and went to work on a ranch. Story is he rodeoed (not sure what) when he was younger. I HAVE seen him break a horse in and we kept my horse at their ranch when I was growing up. :)

This is my all time favorite George Strait songs!!! My Dad lives in San Antonio and was the general manager of a local restaurant. They weren't "close friends" but they became friends. Dad said he was a down to earth kinda guy. Kinda cool! Unfortunately, he lost his daughter in a vehicle accident. "Shortly before midnight on June 25, 1986, in San Marcos, Texas, a tragedy happened that would forever change the Strait family’s lives. George Strait’s daughter Jenifer Lyn Strait was riding with her three friends when a driver lost control of his Ford Mustang as he tried to take a turn too quickly. The car rolled over, south of San Marcos, not far from where the singer lives."

George Strait's son, Bubba Strait used to ride in the rodeo. "George Harvey Strait Jr. aka “Bubba” in now 40 years old (born May 14, 1981). He is the second child of George Strait and Norma Strait. While in college at Texas A&M, Bubba Strait began his competitive rodeo career. After graduating, he became a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) team roper. Team roping is a passion shared by Bubba and his father. “It’s the greatest feeling in the world to watch my son win a roping, or even to just watch him compete”, states George Strait in a 2004 interview with The Team Roping Journal. He adds, “Bubba and I have been fortunate to win a couple of buckles together, and that, my friends, is the ultimate.” Team roping isn’t the only passion these two share. George Strait’s son has also shown talent as a songwriter."

Within the Bucking Stock Events (Saddle Broncs, Bare Back and Bull Riding, the cowboy must stay on the horse or bull for 8 seconds without touching the animal with your free hand. A 100 points would be perfect. (Note: The Animal can earn up to 50 points and the Cowboy can earn up to 50 points). So in order to score high, the horse or bull must really buck and spin hard. And, the cowboy must spur a lot. It's got to be a wild ride in order to score big. These guys are athletes and the sport is dangerous.

I sat on the edge of the stage not 4' from him when he played in Huntsville, Texas, at 16th Street Station. Some of the best two-stepping music to dance to. I'm partial to his early songs, like 'Blame it on Mexico', 'Marina del Ray', 'Oceanfront Property', 'Baby Blue'. And, from Heartland, 'The Man in Love with You'.

My family was deep into rodeos. On my dad’s farm we had our own rodeo area and the local rodeo club practiced at our rodeo area. We produced very good competitors. My brother was the Minnesota state all around cowboy twice. All around means you take the score of the seven main events meaning bull riding, saddle back, bare back, team roping, roping, steer wrestling and cutting. The person with the highest score of these 7 events wins the all around prize. For women there are 5 main events. My sister won the all around for cowgirls. Her strongest event was roping. I was not as competitive as my brother and sister, but I did place in steer wrestling and roping.

I didn't do it myself, but my baby brother did. He got a bull horn through his shoulder before he stopped.

This was in Houston, Texas at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Trail Riders on horses and in Covered Wagons are arriving from all over. It's a sight to see. The stars are coming in to play every night after the rodeo. You should check out a move called "8 Seconds" it's a true story about Lane Frost who was a famous Bull Rider.

Most of the 6 times I saw George throughout my life were at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and one of his signature moves is he always rides up to the stage on Horseback. He is a true Texas Cowboy and will be till he dies. The great thing about George was in Concert he stood on the stage with his guitar in front of a mic and sang, that's all he did, no light show, no back up dancers, no theatrics....just him, his voice, and his guitar. And he had one of the biggest careers in Country Music. The man could ride a horse like nobody's business, it was awesome just to watch him. I was a member of the FFA in school in Texas and participated in Jr. Rodeo's so I've roped calves (2 member team) and I barrel raced until I was 18. But yeah riding horses to us was just natural where we grew up in rural Texas, it was like city folks having a dog. lol I live in NC now but I live on a 500 acre Horse Ranch.

I'm from Texas. In the early 90's everybody used to call him King George. My uncle and one of my cousin's husband used to ride broncos. My uncle was a teenager and got hurt pretty bad. My grandma put her foot down and wouldn't let him ride anymore. My cousin's husband tightened his rope too tight around his hand. He fell off and two of his fingers stayed on the horse. They couldn't sew them back on.

George competes in Roping competitions. I've ridden a PBR Bull - made it 5.3 seconds before my free hand hit the bull. Bareback have made it 8 seconds a few times. I've done a lot of Ranch Rodeo events - team penning, roping, cutting, wild horse riding Any Rodeo event is terrifyingly amazing.

If you ever find yourself with a chance to watch a traditional rodeo... do it. It's an experience. If you find a chance to see a 'Ranch Rodeo' those are fun as well, you don't see the bull riding or bucking bronc's (horses) but you get to see things that are based on what ranch cowboys do. An example is calf branding... they have to rope a calf, run over to a bucket filled with chalk and a branding iron... time stops when the chalked iron hits the calf's skin.

Do one of his swingier songs like "You've Got to Have an Ace in the Hole." He is the main reason western swing had a revival.

I grew up with a dad who listened to country music. Couldn't understand his love of the music because he wasn't a country boy, lol. As a girl that grew up on the beaches of California, I was a die-hard rocker and hated country music until my late 20's. Thankfully, artists I started hearing in the late 1970's opened my eyes to the wonder of country music. Dolly was first which led to my love of the (outlaws) bad boys of country Waylon, Willie, Merle, Johnny, Marty, Hank, etc. As a result, country music has just become another genre of music that I love.
