George still ropes to this day. He rides and is very active in the rodeo scene. He didn't lose a wife or a girlfriend along the way though, he married his high school sweetheart 53 years ago and has been with her ever since. You should definitely check out I Can Still Make Cheyenne, another great and classic rodeo song by George.

Until a new one comes along, Long live the King & Texas's Garrison Brothers Bourbon. I still think Chuck Berry is the King of Rock and Hank Sr. was the grandfather of it, (he's in The Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame), at 29 with "Move it on Over" IMO. Move it on Over was his first big hit in 1947. He was said to have died on 1-1-53. Thats a lot of music for 4 or 5 years. Hank recorded 167 tunes and left many more partial songs. In the notebook found in his Caddy on his death ride, were many unfinished songs. The likes of Bob Dylan and others had a chance to finish and record them. I wish them luck.

King George has 60 #1 songs to his credit. Add to that more Country Music Association awards than anyone in country music history with 83 CMA nominations and 23 wins, including three wins for Entertainer of the Year. Truly the top dog and thus….The King. Also has the record for the largest attendance at a North American indoor concert at 104,793 in Arlington, TX in 2014 at Jerry’s World (Dallas Cowboys) stadium. He and his son are both members of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and team ropers. Two ropers after one steer; one ropes the head (the “header”) and the other then has to rope the back legs (the “heeler”). The steer gets a head start, and scoring is based on how the steer is caught at each end. These cowboys stay mounted, unlike the bulldogging that they showed in the video.

It's steer wrestling. Cowboy jumps off his horse onto the neck of a steer, grabs its nose and throws it to the ground. First time I heard George Straight was back in 1977, before he headlined as fill-in for Eddie Rabbitt at the Houston Rodeo. He was just the lead singer for Ace in the Hole, his band. Sat at his feet at the edge of the stage at 16th Street Station in Huntsville, Texas. Dance floor was always packed when they played. Amarillo by Morning was a staple, always played. Great slow two-step. For a quicker two-step, Blame it on Mexico. My favorites have always been those oldies.

I know it's not a "traditional" mother-son dance, but I don't care. :) I used to sing it to my boys when they were little, so it was the perfect choice. Great reaction. Thanks! Side note, the event at the end is steer wrestling. Using a steer (horns), no tying involved. Calf roping involves roping a calf and then tying. Then there's team roping, where there is a header and a heeler. Oh, and thank you to Steven for bribing this song!

I need to expand my choices in singers, I've only heard a few of George's songs and it was on this site! I haven't heard a bad one yet, so instead of rodeo I'll try teaching this old dog a few new tricks. The motorcycles are a pleasure and dragging a knee is like being one with your machine, but riding a bull could get painful quick. Like Steven almost said about stepping out of a plane, it's only a choice, and it'll likely be painless except for the running, "that might explain my 62F MOS ", This is a great site, and the reactors are a pair of Aces, so what's not to like about it! Could you add a video to the list Dustin? Brooks & Dunn - "I Believe".

@@stevebournite184 Geez Steve I loved the thought of being an airborne ranger, but my feet are as flat as a Bridgeport's machine table. I asked the examiner if that meant I couldn't join Sam's finest (or largest) he said, "don't worry we'll find you a ride". I could double time all day long and always finished the daily pre-chow mile and all PT tests in the front third of the pack. I did ten-mile marches but never did run five miles. The cadence songs were great too, "I wanna be an Airbourne Ranger I wanna lead a life of danger I wanna go to Viet Nam". Some of the others were a bit off color for mixed crowds. I ended up building roads & bridges as a free fall crane operator, all cables, brakes & clutches. That helped with the asbestos in my lungs. At least I had great hand eye coordination. I still feel I missed out on that particular flight in a C 130! I should have jumped at least once in my life. I kick started high compression Nortons too, no options till the E=starts came out with Lucas Electrics. Lucas was called the Prince of Darkness. Those never worked well. Yes, Nortons do handle well and will let you drag either knee. They do require attention to detail and tuning. My back is still fine, and the right knee could be better. I lived on the Atlantic for fifty years, water doesn't scare me Steven, but I do give it the respect it deserves! I used to think women were finicky, it was just my imagination. You just need to listen.

What camera do you use? It has a nice picture, even if the depth of field is limited. I use a Canon EOS Rebel T6i to "webcast" my Church's Sunday Services. It was around $500 and it has a nice enough picture and it is relatively inexpensive in comparison. I took a photography class my last semester of college and we used the Canon EOS 6D Mark II and it was super nice but it is also $1,500! And that was just the camera body! They had some crazy expensive lenses we could use also. It was one of my favorite classes of all time!

The Universe also had Nikon Cameras that were comparable to the Canon and I tried both and I personally found the Canon easier to use. I had classmates who said I was crazy and felt the complete opposite.

Late to the party but while the live vocals are amazing, the studio music is much better. I think it’s the sound system but the twin fiddles on the studio track are superb.

This version is interesting, the radio cut is smoother - doesn't have those bouncy drums all the way through, and the fiddle solos have more space to really sing. Still holds up though!

george grew up on a horse. He was not a rodeo rider. After having some success in music he started competing in team roping from time to time. Also George did not write this song. It was written by Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser. In fact Stafford had the original recording of it. It was also covered by Chris Ledoux (who was a rodeo rider and a bronc riding champion.) George is also the king because he has to date had (I believe) 61 #1 hits. More than anyone ever. The Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson. ANYBODY!!

Second only to George Straight is the Turnpike Troubadours, I actually like them better. A good place to start with the Turnpike Troubadours would be “The Rut,” or pretty much anything they do but, I like the rut as a starting point because I get it. Other great ones, the funeral, the bird hunter, mercury, quit while I’m ahead, come as you are, the house fire, good lord lorrie, brought me. Come on fellas, get out of Nashville for a couple little whiles and explore some good country music.

Stephen/Steven, I hope you see this one along with Dustin and Keith. I'm pretty sure this is someone you haven't heard yet. Boxcar Willie was a staple on The Grand Ole Opry and he was best known, at least to me, for the song, "The Wabash Cannonball". Wikipedia: Wabash Cannonball 19th Century American folk song, popularized in the 1930s by the Carter Family and Roy Acuff. ****(Also Opry Legends) "The Great Rock Island Route", popularized as "Wabash Cannonball" and various other titles, is a 19th-century American folk song that describes the scenic beauty and predicaments of a fictional train, the Wabash Cannonball Express, as it traveled on the Great Rock Island Railroad. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aKt-srqDmsjUds4.html

That was bull dogging. They wrestle the steer to the ground and let it up when the judge says so. Calf roping is a totally different event where they tie three legs of the calf. George Strait is a team roper. George will be 72 in May (2024). He is one of our state treasures. He is the King. George has been married to his high school sweetheart for in 1971. You have to realize country songs are not about the lives persons singing them.
