This song had a massive impact on me as a child. I have a great imagination and i always pictures a mini-movie in my head when we were traveling with the music. needless to say this created a very big drama movie with a great ending that sometimes almost makes me cry.

When he says "this one's for Becky, as he watched the last one fall", it chokes me up, every time. No one advocates bar-room brawls, of course---my husband had a few, before I got ahold of 'im---but, there are times.... I, like someone else, said, am surprised he didn't take a gun---as many times as I've heard this song, I still think, when he says "he reached above the fireplace, and took down his daddy's....", I still think he's gonna say "gun", cuz every house in the South has a gun over the fireplace!!

Kenny Rogers is such a great storyteller with his music. He is one of those artists that as a listener you are focusing just as much on the verses as you are on the melody & the singing.

I love that the two messages of this song are not mutually exclusive. Yes, it better to turn the cheek when you can, bit when it's no longer your cheek to turn then "sometimes you have to fight when you're a man" Every reactor I see with this song at the beginning is like "Yep, great message, turn the cheek!" And then "they took turns at Becky" comes up and suddenly it's all "kill those a-holes" and that is the entire message of the song.

Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Lady", "Through the Years" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.

Can't go wrong with Kenny Roger's. His raw voice is beautiful and addictive. You don't miss a word when he sings. Another great storyteller is Gordon Lightfoot. His true story of a ship wreck, The Edmund Fitzgerald will hold and consume your attention. Worth checking out. Thanks Craig. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

Loved your reaction to this song. I also know you did a reaction to THE GAMBLER. You need to watch the videos if these 2 songs on you tube or vevo. The show so much more detail and emotion

LUv, Luv, Luv Kenny Rogers! Growing my sister and I loved to sing Ruben James we would cry our eyes out. Ruby is one of my all time favorites. But everything Kenny does is gold!

Kenny Rogers was a great talent when it came to story telling. His songs always had a way of drawing you into the stories. In listening, you were immediately able to visualize the story as it unfolded. Another legend in country music is Randy Travis. His song, Three Wooden Crosses, is a great one that shows his ability to tell a story through songs.

Reuban James is one I hope you'll react to. The video by Johisfas is my fav. You get to see a young Kenny Rogers and it includes all the verses of the song. Many of the videos of this song leave parts out.
