Darrell was born in London, KY, not far from the towns he sings about in the song. He grew up in East Gary, IN (now called Lake Station), then moved to southern Cali, then Toronto, then Boston where he went to college. He has lived in Nashville since the mid 90s. Darrell is a sought-after studio musician playing basically any stringed instrument that can be plucked or strummed as well as piano and accordion. His songs have been covered by artists like Faith Hill, The Dixie Chicks, Guy Clark, Brad Paisley, Travis Tritt, Montgomery Gentry, Sara Evans...
This song first appeared on Darrell's 1997 debut album Aloha from Nashville, which also included the song "It's A Great Day To Be Alive" which became a huge hit for Travis Tritt in 2000. "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive" has been covered by many artists including Montgomery Gentry, Kathy Mattea, Patty Loveless and Brad Paisley.
