You are sooo right! Real instruments, real voices, melodic lines and beautiful lyrics, some funny, and the harmonies. I'm a white guy "not that there's anything wrong with that" [from Seinfeld hahahha] , and grew up in Michigan with everything from Motown, to Beatles, and beyond. Became a music teacher. Something I never knew until mid life, Stevie Wonder went to the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing Michigan with my late cousin....a brush with greatness "I missed it by that much" [Remember "Get Smart?" lol]. i hate computer sounds and auto tune crap.

I'm in my 60s and I would say that finding good music from the current era takes a lot more effort - it is lost in the huge pool of bad music out there. A couple of examples of current music I think is good would be the singer LP singing "Lost on You" or Veta Gran Fleet singing "Heat Above".

This is indeed Peter Cetera in the lead on this one. However, early Chicago had a rotation of three primary lead singers: Peter Cetera (bass), Robert Lamm (keyboards) and Terry Kath (lead guitar). Give a listen to "South California Purples." It's from their first album, and has a HEAVY psychedelic influence! Robert Lamm sings lead on that particular song. Terry Kath SHREDS on guitar..and don't forget..HORNS!! 💯❤👍

Yes the horns. That was the biggest unfortunate change with the 80s power ballad Chicago. The horns were almost non-existent or an after thought. Producer David Foster basically took over and changed the group sound and deemphasized the horns.

Not only is Peter singing he wrote the song. This one is a childhood favorite.

One of my favorite Chicago songs. Peter Cetera and his unmistakable vocals will always live on.

I just love the French horns in this song; they add so much to an incredible piece of music.

This really was a transition song for Chicago, from the Jazz Rock fusion sound they began with to the power ballad powerhouse they became. ✌️

Although this song was a little different than the rest of their 70s material it still felt like Chicago to me. The power ballad Chicago of the 80s just never felt right. Yes that’s what helped them survive the changing times and yes there were some nice songs but they were the same type of songs that a lot of others were doing at the time. Chicago lost their uniqueness in the 80s. Also a lot of the songs were from outside writers.

Yes, that WAS Peter Cetera singing lead and harmony vocals. "If You Leave Me Now," was Chicago's first #1 hit around the world in 1976. This one song single handedly shifted Chicago from its big rock band sound, to the softer, rock ballads of the early 80s. This song became such a popular seller, their record label pushed Chicago for more ballads. The radio stations back then held a HUGE influence in directing record sales. The more this song was played, the more the record buying public wanted Peter Cetera singing Chicago love ballads. This, coupled with the death of Chicago's rocking soul, co-lead singer/guitarist Terry Kath in 1977 and the popularity of MTV music videos in the early 80s featuring the face and voice of ballad singer Peter Cetera, Chicago's "rock band with horns" reputation and sound died. Peter then left for his solo career and Chicago's sound died with it. The "original" Chicago sound ONLY lives on their early albums (1969 - 1975). If you want that BIG BRASS SOUND of Chicago you both fell in love with, do a deep dive into these older albums, Chicago Transit Authority (1969 - their first) through Chicago VIII (their eighth in 1975), most are double albums. "I'm A Man", "25 or 6 to 4", "Make Me Smile", "Questions 67 and 68", "Beginnings", "Feeling Stronger Every Day", "Saturday in the Park", "Old Days", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is", "Free", "Dialogue Parts 1 and 2"...these are the classic and essential Chicago set list songs and they play all of these still in their current concert tour.

For me this was the Chicago song, when I was 7 years old it seemed to be No1 everywhere and you couldn't; turn on the TV or radio without hearing it. Great days. You may not wish to review it again, but watch Peter Cetera perform this live in Sau Paulo, in his sixties, with audience participation his voice still incredible. Some singers stand the test of time, he's definitely one.

I put this on a burned CD when I was maybe 15 and we listened to the mix driving up to my friend's grandma's lakehouse. She was driving and when this song came on she gasped and said she hadn't heard it in years and got tears in her eyes. Still think of her everytime I listen to it.

Every single time I hear this, it's the summer of '76. My sister and I were on the living room floor, looking at the the CHICAGO X album cover. I read Cetera's name as lead on this song. I told my other sister about the name and she named my first niece after him that July. Kinda surprised you didn't recognize his voice. It's most distinctive. 🥰

Amber just melted into her "Amber Sway". Another Chicago ballad with a similar vibe that I know y'all will love is their song "Wishing You Were Here". What makes this beautiful song even more special is that the Beach Boys provided the harmonies on it.

That was my high school prom theme song. Has a special meaning when I hear it.

I love this band Chicago. You can always tell one of their songs because of their signature horn section. But fun fact when they formed in 1967 they were called "Chicago Transit Authority" Then in 68 or 69 something like that. They changed it to just Chicago

​@jrox6091 Yes, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) which ran the metro trains threatened suit. On top of that I've read the long name gave them billing problems on venue marquees. On one they were billed as Chicago Transients, lol. Thus, they decided to just go with Chicago which is where they all met and went to college together anyway.

This is a prime example of how Peter Cetera moved the band from its roots as a rock/jazz fusion band to what Peter wanted, to make ballads that would show off his voice. Many in the band did not like the direction the band was moving (the horn guys). You can mark the history of Chicago from with Terry Katz and without Terry, he was the soul of the band.

By the time the 80s came around, people's taste in music had changed and the early Chicago stuff was not working much anymore. Their lead writer, Lamm, hadn't written anything substantial since '76 or so. They had to change with the times or not survive.

I've been waiting for this one. It's my favorite Chicago song. I was 4 years old, and I remember loving this when it was a hit. It was their first #1 hit, which was 1976. The strings at the end are so memorable. They bring me right back to a simpler time... before school. You just heard Chicago's BEST!!!

French horns by Gene Hyde and George Sherry, acoustic guitar was not Terry Kath but actually producer James William Guercio according to Wikipedia.

It's a song of love it's sung so heartfelt its lyrics just relate to anyone who's been in love or had their heart broken. Loved it when I heard it in high school and still love it today.

A rock band with full orchestral instrumentation. When else have you ever said “that was a killer French horn” unless it was in a Chicago power ballad.

As an old guy....I remember that when they started out they were "The Chicago Transit Authority"....local DJ's would shorten that to simply CTA. Later the band changed the name to simply Chicago.

Pete Cetera's vocal is STERLING, fantastic!

You can't go wrong with this classic band. He did duets with Amy Grant and Cher, among others. The Cher one was "After All" and Amy Grant was "Next Time I Fall In Love." I suggest some early Chicago such as "Make Me Smile" (1970).

This song was written and sung by Chicago's bass player - Peter Cetera - in July 1976, whom was with the band from 1967 until 1985. Back-up vocal/harmonizing is Robert Lamm, the band's keyboard/pianist, and also another of the band's primary songwriters, along with James Pankow, trombonist for the band. All 3 of them have been inducted into the R & R songwriters HoF. Robert Lamm is one of the main vocalists for the band, along with Cetera and Terry Kath (up until his death in 1978 - RIP)

I jammed to all of Chicago’s songs as they came out - but wasn’t aware of the intimate history and internal dynamics of the group - and the impact of Terry Kath’s death on the band until years later. The sound changed when David Foster took over, eliminating the horns and showcasing Peter Cetera. Again, great songs - I loved the later ballads, but now I mourn the creative loss of the horns along with Terry Kath’s more jazzy leadership when he so tragically died.

This was before Terry Kath's tragic death. The band, with the exception of Laudir de Oliveira (percussion), was the original line up. After Terry's death, Chicago would never be the same.

It's time to see a live Chicago rock song. I recommend 25 or 6 to 4 live at Tanglewood from 1970. I know you have done the studio version, but you really need to see this one. This was when they had their original guitarist, Terry Kath; you will be impressed. They get started while the drummer is assembling his kit. When it is ready, they really get going. A young Peter Cetera takes the lead vocals, so you will get the chance to see him.

An underrated song of Chicago is "Wishing You Were Here", a mellower, more moody sound from the band. Great harmonies and backing vocals are provided by Al Jardine, Carl Wilson and Dennis Wilson of The Beach Boys. Definitely worth a listen, guys.

Refreshing to hear Chicago's warm horns. The big sound isn't over-produced, but nicely balanced, highlighting each player.

OK, that was a beautiful Chicago song for Amber. Now it's time for something that rocks for Rob. Try Chicagos 1969 "I'm a Man".

Hope you get to "Color My World" someday. There are words to it although it doesn't start that way.

This song is so special to me and breaks my heart every time I hear it. My Mum took her own life in 1984 when I was 5 and my overriding memory of that time was of her listening to this song over and over again. For many years I couldn’t get through the whole song but now, twice a year on her birthday and anniversary I visit her and I play her Chicago, sing silently and have a good cry. Thank you for bringing this most special song to more people. I cried through your whole reaction but I love that you love Chicago ❤
