The powerful voice of David Clayton Thomas. Now you've gotta hear "God Bless The Child"..& "And When I Die"...& "You Make Me So Very Happy". 1969 was a very good year for this band. 💙☮💙

Blood Sweat and Tears, Earth Wind and Fire and Chicago all hit together in the late 60s and the fusion of rock and horns was solidified.

Then in 1970, along came Bill Chase and his band Chase with I think five trumpets playing. Unfortunately, that ended four years later when their plane crashed in bad weather.
David Clayton Thomas, what a voice! You Made Me So Very Happy is the bomb as far as Blood, Sweat and Tears goes!
Asia & BJ, you’ll love their “You Make Me So Very Happy “ and "And When I Die" !!!! Lou Soloff on the great trumpet solo!!

I love both of those, but especially "When I Die"!!! "There'll be one child born in this world to carry; carry on"!!! ❤️
BS&T had such a strong jazz influence in their music it really set them apart from the other groups of the day. Just phenomenal song after song, album after album. Saw them in concert several times! You hear a lot of instruments from BS&T, they even included a tuba!!
@mikeat2637

Indeed, and a lot of blues also. Paul Butterfield and Al Kooper were heavily involved at the beginning before bowing. I personally think BS&T had the BEST horn section of all, not to mention keyboards. And that Latin interlude in God Bless The Child kicked ass.

@@mikeat2637 The lineup of talented musicians in BS&T is incredible. Cannot forget Emmy award winner Bobby Colomby! The breadth and depth of the talent in this group is on display in every one of their pieces. Never, never tire of listening to their music!!

@@glennb2227 My husband and I both liked Chicago, too. We had all the albums of both groups and went to the live concerts of both. Chicago was/is his favorite and BS&T was/is mine. Many, many years after our divorce, we went together to go see Chicago in concert.
Blood, Sweat & Tears is a jazz-rock music group founded in 1967. They are noted for their combination of brass & rock band instrumentation. Especially love their stuff when David Clayton-Thomas joined as their lead singer. They have had a lot of great songs such as "You Make Me So Very Happy", "And When I Die", "Hi-De-Ho" "Lucretia MacEvil", "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", "Go Down Gamblin'", "Lisa Listen To Me", "God Bless The Child" etc.

"Lucretia McEvil"... now there's a deep cut. I haven't heard that one in forever.
Our HS band director was a huge BS&T fan. Slide in the band room in the morning and find him with his trumpet jamming out to old BS&T albums.
And When I Die is another good one. This was the only band my dad and I both liked! ✌️

Blood Sweat and Tears does one of the most PHENOMENAL versions of God Bless the Child...it will blow your socks off...🎶🎶🎶
Blood Sweat and Tears were one of the greatest groups of the late 60's and early 70's. I applaud you for acknowledging this group.
Blood sweat and tears was just as big as Chicago was in the 70’s with the great horn sections...
I remember sitting in the kitchen with my mom in 1969 (3years old) grooving to the swing, swag, groove and over all kick ass of this masterpiece... The memory of my mom's smile while the flute was playing at the end will likely be with me when I leave...

It's a seriously funky tune, that's for sure.
I know the ending of this sounded weird, but that was the jazz/blues influence of the group. You have to react to more of their songs, such as More and More, God Bless The Child, Sometimes In Winter and the instrumental variations on the works of Erik Satie. Very cool for 1968-69. They had the BEST horn and keyboard sections of all time in my opinion.
You really got to listen to God Bless the Child to hear a powerful song.
I have so many memories of sitting with my father in the summertime listening to oldies and this was one of the songs that he'd play. It's not quite in my er, wheelhouse but it's a good song.
Great memories of this band's music!!
He has a definite Ray Charles vibe. Great song and great reaction🤠🤓
This band launched the career of trumpeter Randy Brecker who went on to form the Brecker Brothers with his brother Michael. Together and separately they played on some of the biggest jazz and funk albums of the 70’s including Parliament’s and Rick James’ best albums along with George Benson, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Spyro Gyro.
I simply adore this band!!!! God Bless the Child (studio version) is another song not to miss from them!!!! 🤩
This band and Chicago had a great brass section!
that was the most hippiest song. one of the most hippiest songs I've always loved that song. blood sweat and tears I mean wow. Shine on.
BS&T are very Jazz R & B psychedelic music oriented with a big band from 40's sound. This group helped pioneered this fusion style to the popular music chart and actually paved the way for groups like Tower of Power, Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire, etc......Great musicians and great songs 🎵. Check out "Blues Part 2" and the cover of Billie Holiday's " God Bless The Child. " Really Dope songs. And thank you guys for accepting my request "Spinning Wheel."
That is the late, great Lew Soloff on that trumpet solo. He was a master at his craft.
Louis Armstrong (sachmo) played a trumpet you could see his cheeks puff out and he sang the song it's a wonderful world
Not sure why they used the "wheel of fortune" wheel here when the song is talking about riding on a carousel (the pained pony) which goes around on a wheel.
That was a calliope playing there at the end. They were mostly used in circuses.
Blood Sweat and Tear, Grand Funk Railroad and The Band were 3 great bands of the late sixties, and a lot of people have forgotten about.
Asia jazz intertwined with the psychedelic sound and became jazz fusion. Characterized by the fury and experimentation of free jazz but on electric instruments usually with rock guitar. Miles Davis, Bitch’s Brew is generally credited with starting the genre. Musicians who played with him during this period went on to form some of the most legendary jazz fusion bands of all time including Weather Report, Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock. Also RnB Artists James Mtume, Reggie Lucas (one of Madonna’s early producers among others) and Michael Henderson.
You HAVE to react to their version of God Bless The Child- it is a MASTERPIECE!
BJ, basically the mouth formation (called embouchure) and the breath support are about setting the range for playing. The fingering is some combination of valves that give different notes within the range controlled by the embouchure. You don't have to have massive lungs or huge air -- it is mainly finesse in how you control the air that is vibrating your lips. And there are players from all races with the thinnest of lips, and the thickest of lips that can rock that horn. It is a hard instrument to play well. I am an amateur, but have been working on it for 55 years. I have gotten pretty good, but would never claim to have "mastered" it. Music is a gift from God. Listening to it is soul soothing. MAKING it is divine! Pick up ANY instrument you want to play and have some fun learning it and playing it. It will give you appreciation you could never have had without actually doing it. Love your and Asia's reactions! Thank you!
This was late 60s, early 70s. Hippies, protesters, weed and war, music was good across the board, white, black, salsa. The graphics were insane
One of the first live concerts I ever attended was a Blood, Sweat and Tears show close to my home. i spotted and talked to Lead Singer David Clayton Thomas at the back of the venue. He was very personable and we talked for 5-10 minutes, then he went up on stage and did his thing. Great show, great band, and DCT a great guy.
Blood, sweat, and tears was a great band in the 70s..I went to a concert of theirs. Listen to go down gamblin.
I played trumpet in high school jazz band, and it takes awhile to get the sound right. It's a matter of pressing your lips together and making a buzzing sound. Then do that into the mouthpiece. Then work on air control and different pitches along with the different fingerings.
Blood Sweat & Tears, CTA and the Electric Flag all came out around the same time in the late 60s. There had been jazz crossovers to pop radio before, but this was different as rock & blues was mixed in. I wonder if it made any impression on Becker and Fagan at the time.
Thanks for playing this one! Love the horns! This came out about 50 years ago, but it still sounds great!

Glad you like it!
Love their strong jazz influences
Blood Sweat & Tears are Chicago with a touch of country.
I played piano! Mom wanted me to play clarinet! I thought I wanted to play trumpet but well saxophone called me! Lol this song had it all!
It's funny that whoever made the video defaulted to the gambling/game show style of "spinning wheel", when other lyrics refer to a carousel. In a similar lyrical vein, try Joni Mitchell's The Circle Game, or The Hollies' On A Carousel.
For trumpet the mouth position is called embouchure. That is how you can play tunes on a bugle which is like a trumpet with no valves.
There was also the good old Trombone too
Wow. This is an old one. I am thinking this was way back during the hippie era. Lol Before I hit my teens. But I do remember this song and we youngsters had so much fun listening to it. Never had a clue what it all meant. And didn’t care what it meant. Lol
Going down Gambling, Lucretia McEvill and Hi De Ho are three of my personal favorites of Blood Sweat and Tears.
Aahhh I remember this one!!!😁 the music that is🎶🎶 not so much the words... but gotta love that beat!!!! And yes the musical instruments too! Love it❤️❤️
They were a great band, similar to Chicago, with the horns, had some great music
Big lips is not an impediment to playing trumpet. Lots of trumpet players have large lips, and there are different sizes of mouthpieces. And there are only 3 keys yes, but the combination of how you use them is important along with using your lips to get the different notes. I played trumpet in high school.
I would have to say that this is one of most unique songs ever. Yes, I am old enough to remember it.
They all met at Gilliard. A band that was short lived. And their all world class musicians. It’s a killer Jazz Break in the middle. Asia you have a very keen ear, and I appreciated your explaining the lips and mouth on brass instruments. I never knew that. I guess from being in HS band. Great Job Guys
Trumpet solo by the late, great Lou Soloff.
Oh yeah, this is my jam.
I saw them live outdoors in 1989. Front row, and they were fantastic.
These guys were good for about 2 yrears and we're gone! Thanks for some cool tunes!
Hey guy's, another excellent reaction!!! You should react to, "You make me so, very happy." It's really good.
Saw them here in Triple Cities NY... the Carousel Captial of the world.... great concert (1969 ish) . Catch a Painted Pony
Lew Soloff on trumpet!! RIP
in the trumpet category there's Chuck Mangione but I read his trumpet is called flugelhorn
What is hard about the trumpet as a beginner is blowing the high notes. The E note was hard and the highest I could go to. To me it has to do wih lung pressure & lung strength in the blowing notes correctly said I, a 1 year student in high school. The more you practice, the easier it gets.
The trumpet has 12 combinations of notes. A trombone or baritone is for bigger lips and more air pressure.
Asia is right.....1.41..."show you the colors that are reeeeaaallll"....that part is psychedelic....just a touch of that.
A true testament to great music
Give a listen to "Lady Willpower" by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (1968). Elvis called Gary Puckett the greatest male Pop Vocalist of the late 60's.
It's so great that everyone is welcome
Hi Asia & BJ, I was in a horn band and we did this and others by them plus Chicago who has many great songs
This band can do anything
One of my favorite childhood groups.
I thought I was hearing Sir Tom Jones when it first started lol
My 5 th birthday I had this song loved the carnival sound❤
what a time it was in musical history
All of them Juliard trained. DCT never got his just do as a singer. Lou Soloff's trumpet solo at the end of Lucretia's Reprise is just out of this world. You need to listen to "Lucretia MacEvil and then Lucretia's reprise IF you want to hear just how good this band really was.
Listen to their tune and when I die.
I played trumpet for 6 years then moved to baritone...bigger mouthpiece.
This takes me back to early childhood, probably before Kindergarten but I remember it well.
I played trumpet until 10 years ago when the big band I was in broke up due the death of the director. you have to practice a certain number of hours every day to be good at it and keep your lung, lip, tongue and fingers in shape. That said....THIS is way better than that computer crap they spit out now. Real instruments. You also heard a trombone.
Do Roller Coaster by these guys. On that song, the sax & trombone became part of the blues brothers band.
Along with everything else suggested, you've gotta hear "go down gamblin". That song jams, definitely one of their best. My favorite, at least
Now you know why I love Blood Sweat and Tears listen to the horns fan fucking tastic
LOL BJ you make me laugh with that comment about the three valves on the trumpet I thought the same thing when I had to choose an instrument in fourth grade yeah, I thought the trumpet would be the easiest too. LOL it's not
agree on the god bless the child. probably the best song they ever did but didn't get much air time.remember beings i was born in 56.
Go Down Gamblin’…. Best BS&T song hands down (IMHO)!
yah guys a trumpet is not easy it takes time to develop the strength in your lips to be good and like all installments, there are best practices but trumpet players make for good kissers.
Check out Leonid & Friends Cover
This song has a little of that whacky 70's at the end especially. God Bless the Child and And When I die are seriously outstanding. BTW - I just searched your reactions and NO DONOVAN songs? Oh my please Asia you need some of that rabbit hole. Sunshine Superman, Mellow Yellow, Season of the witch, Hurdy Gurdy man, Wear your love like heaven and more. He's in his own lane and it's cool
Also move your tongue a lot for the trumpet.
You guys should react to David Phelps "Let Freedom Ring" Gaither Band!!! Can't wait to see your reaction...simply awesome!
I think you'd really enjoy the song titled God bless the child!!
This is by far the best reaction youv'e done today.More please.
Got some great funk in there, love the horns.
I love that you react to the music I grew up with. 💜💜💜
Nice one, verry big hit in the Netherlands. Long time no hear this. To me this is a happy song, makes me whistel. Thanks guys, whisteling again 😙😙 👊👍❤
Also try the group Chicago. Same kind of music. Try the tune anybody know what time it is.
Takes me back to when I was a teenager. Thanks guys!
Also You Make Me So Very Happy.
Great song and group but I always listened to the very end where one says, “that wasn’t too good.” Then they all laugh.
David Clayton Thomas
Hey, I had forgotten about this one... Thanks

Any time!
Wait a minute, was this before Wheel of Fortune? Because that’s the exact wheel they use. I thought WOF started after this song came out? Someone help me!!
BJ, I was waiting for you yo recognise the jazz part
"You Made Me Very Happy"
This song won them a Grammy the year it came out.
