Yes, he is in Love, no matter how many times he tries to tell himself he's not. Really nice old song. Good memories of that time.

The making of this was astonishing for the time. The harmonised vocals were made by recording each voice 16 times for each note of the scale. Then recorded that on a loop so you get the voices acting as an instrument. The making of it is here. Remember this was before digital recording. It was on tape. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZaOsx5amnNa3n9Y.html

The whispered " Big boys don't cry " part was actually done by the band's secretary Kathy Redfern and the phrase you were looking for to describe the crescendo effect is " Wall of Sound " - similar to the Phil Spector concept

I believe it was their female assistant who said big boys don't cry. When I was a kid I thought this was a sad romantic song. As an adult I finally understood the words of a jerk in denial. Still very haunting harmonies.

Believe it or not, they made all those sounds analog! The way they made those "harmonies" that sounded like they were being played through a synth was by individually recording their voices on tape dozens of times at different pitches and then playing them back. If you guys want another smooth 70's song check out How Long by Ace.

There are 256 vocal lines on this song done manually by 4 people. Graham Gouldman from the band said that the vocals alone took 3 weeks to record. It also took all 4 of them at the mixing desk at the same time to mix it correctly. Whispered female saying " big boys don't cry" was done by the studio's receptionist

I really enjoyed watching both of your reactions, especially at 3:14 when the song's bridge comes on and both of you look at the camera. Regarding the lyrics "Be quiet, big boys don't cry..." --- Yes, it could be his own inner voice (as shown in the music video); and within the context of the song, it probably is a memory of his mother telling him those exact words when he was a little boy and he got really emotional over something. Some guys (especially back in the 1970s when this song came out) are raised to hold back their emotions because that "coolness" under pressure was considered how "real men" should act. You know, like James Dean, Marlon Brando, Clint Eastwood, Yul Brenner, and so forth. The list goes on and on. Some people interpret this is a breakup song; but I look at this song as a young guy who was raised to be "cool" under pressure, and then he meets a girl who totally overwhelms his emotions with Love. Suddenly, he doesn't know how to deal with those strong emotions, how he should act towards her, and how much of his inner self he should reveal to her. My two cents.
