First time at Whitby Goth Weekend! April 2023 Festival Review

Фильм және анимация

Finally! I'm back on KZread with my first ever visit to Whitby Goth Weekend. This festival in Northern England attracts thousands of Goths of all ages who express themselves through fabulous dress and have fun in a seaside town known for its connections to Dracula himself.
I'll show you my favourite things to see and do at Whitby Goth Weekend, and a few tips for getting around.
Thinking about going? A few more important things i learned:
Whitby Goth Weekend's website doesn't have much information beyond the dates. (I almost didn't go because I wasn't sure it was even happening. That's because they don't really programme anything.) It's a bit weird but you just have to trust it and go.There's a lot happening. But you have to talk to people to find out what/where.
This facebook group was super helpful for asking questions of locals and regulars: / 718912144814041
Whitby is small and accommodations book up months in advance. I stayed at the Captain's Lodge B&B which is close to the music venue and vendors and they were lovely: thecaptainslodge.co.uk/
Travelling solo? No problem. Everyone was super friendly and it was easy to talk to strangers.
And if you've never actually dressed up like this before but always felt it in your heart, this is a very safe space to wear whatever you feel like. For me, sometimes that was simply jeans and comfy shoes. But if there's ever a place to go full Uber Goth and fit in, this is it.
Safe travels! Happy to answer any other questions in the comments below.

Brilliant video, you have covered Whitby so well. It is such a beautiful town, you have captured the essence really well. Love the music. And incredibly, you captured the Vampyre with your incredible lens (not all cameras can do this!). Thank you for your kindness and charisma. Vlad Dracul III

That's me at 0:19 in the Terminator Mask and purple wig (glad you don't see that every day that's just part of what makes WGW so special) - Thanks for including me and sharing your video. I hope you had a fantastic time at Whitby Goth Weekend, if your video is any indication I guess you did.

Great video! I’ve heard that the thrift shopping is pretty good there as well and the shops pull out pieces they think would appeal to the goth weekender patrons. Definitely appreciate how nice that town looks outside of the goth weekend. That lapidary museum looks cool! Definitely on my travel wish list along with Cornwall and the Museum of Witchcraft! Looking forward to more travel videos from you!

Yes! I forgot to mention the thrift shops. I didn't really find them until Sunday at 4pm, when they were all closing! Would probably come Thursday night to Sunday day if I was going it again to get more shopping in.

Liisa, It was so nice to see this. I am so glad you uploaded this clip. On page 287 of your Encyclopedia Gothica which sits to the left of me now as I type, you have an entry for Whitby. I have enjoyed your post for years and someday hope to meet you. You showed always show the Goth subculture at its best, and this festival in the best light, and by the way- your silver and black look is amazing. Always, Prof. M🎩

It was a great weekend. I visited Whitby on the Sunday and had no idea about the goth event. The train from Newcastle was full, but of course, at the time I didn't know why. I'd even got a bargain ticket, £5.90 for a journey taking about 3 hours each way, from Newcastle.

I don't know why it took several trains from London! It shouldn't have done. It would, however be easier to reach via Leeds, Manchester of Newcastle airports. Then get a train and or a coach.

You’re welcome. TG had an excellent lineup. For a first-time visitor it wasn’t obvious to find though. My understanding is there is some background/politics involved that I don’t need to discuss without first-hand knowledge. All I know is I wish it Got as much attention as the costumes. (And yeah that’s a slip and a lisp! Ha.)
