CAMPERVAN NIGHTMARES (Northern England) Winter Van Life UK | Whitby
#whitby #vanlifeuk The struggle continues doing winter van life in the UK- this week in the Yorkshire seaside town of Whitby
The places we visit in the video are the beautiful: Whitby, Saltburn, Staithes and Redcar
Enough is enough this week, as Liam throws the towel in
It's been one of those weeks where we had the most beautiful time, but tainted by our situation living in our converted Ford Transit campervan
We DO NOT recommend parking along the seafront overnight at Redcar, it is the has the largest boy racer activity we have ever seen (like a scene off Fast and the Furious, which funnily enough we love as films)
The Bubble Wrap trick was first seen on the Life is Too Short Channel / lifeistooshortck

Same! We’re looking for a van now and it’s great to get a real insight into what it’s like
Hi guys! I posted a suggestion for Liam in the last video about using a rolled up blanket or a pillow to put underneath his knees while lying down because not only will it make you shorter while lying down but it works wonders for the lower back. You can also use the blanket or pillow for in between your knees while sleeping on your side as well. This was recommended to me from my chiropractor because of back issues and it works great. Good luck! Love the videos!

I do that for my back.
So glad you are getting the bed sorted !! Sleep is key. Fingers crossed it can be sorted quickly for you both ! 🤞🏼
When I had a fixed bed in my van it wasn’t fitted right up to the back doors a good 4inch gap, and my diesel heater had a pipe that heated the under bed area. Never had a damp problem.
Could you raise the bed slightly so it sits above the height of the kitchen worktop, then have something that slides out to extend the sleeping area further into the van? That way you could sleep "longways" with all the length you need. During the day time, you could slide it out of the way. Not an expert on such things, so it might not be feasible of course, but I think I've seen something similar in purpose built campers.
@NotAllWhoWanderAreLost..

That was my thinking 🤔 something over the counter space and the spare foam could be used as a back rest on the bed during the day.
@NunontheRun

I was thinking something similar - I think Eamon & Bec have a 2 foot folding thing that they fold down or up to make the bed longer length wise in Casa 2 (their 2nd, most recent van build)

We made a decision and are moving forward with that...Will update on the (next) video this Sunday 🙏🚐💚
Liam, I was parked up next to a similar van to yours last year, it had a triangular shaped add on, it attached to the fixed bed frame and added about 1ft to the side of the bed the guy slept on. Due to the angle it meant they could still get up and use the rest of the van… I hope that makes sense and you get it sorted. I had 3 attempts at getting my van right, so keep your chin up and I’m sure there is simple, low cost solution out there for you…

Thanks Kevin, appreciate it 🙏
Heya! I really think the solution for Liam's sleep: buy a length of board to span across your kitchen, to rest on the counters. Buy a piece of foam mattress and velcro to the board. Orient your bedding to go back to front. When you get out of bed in the morning, just use the extension as a back rest spanning across your back doors. At bed time, it is just a matter of placing the extension back in place and tucking your bedding around it. If you do this, don't forget you'll need larger sheets. Whether this or something else, I hope Liam finds a solution soon. Nothing is right when sleep isn't good. Hugs and good luck!

Finally, make sure slide out is not on side of sliding door! Decent coachbuilder could have this sorted in few hours.
You could have a panel build out, standing proud of the rest of the van, added to one end of the van's bed (opposite side to sliding door). Some Mercedes/VW campervans have it as they are somewhat narrow.

I have an idea for your bed problem. Any chance your bed is the same height to your kitchen, and benches? You might be able to buy some sheets of thin wood to lay on top of the kitchen and bench, a roll up foam mattress to extend your bed size, and sleep downwards during evening. have day mode and night mode. Store the wood under the mattress.If you know what I mean. I hope you find a answer, you need a proper sleep. The bubble wrap worked a treat. Yorkshire and Whitby are very stunning. I really like your channel, you both so bubbly, great editing and music. I wish you very best success

Liam, as already mentioned, another solution would be to sleep on the bed lengthways, and make little 'extensions' for your feet. these can be removed when not being slept on and stored in the garage area. Ive seen it done before on a transit, but can't think who it was, sorry. Hope you get something sorted mate, best of luck

hi guys not sure if youve got a solution for the bed yet but couple ideas for you to look into, you could possibly get another 3 to 4 inches by putting side skirts on the sides to extend the width of the van, other idea is to spin your bed around and have a lift up/extendable piece to go between the kitchen worktop have a look at Eamon and Bec's latest van build. hope you get it sorted soon

Is there a way to extend the bed with a slide out piece that can be pushed away during the day and pulled out at night? I've seen it done in other Van's, even the small space between your units would give you just that extra bit of leg room needed

I had a transit like yours for a few years and like Liam, i was too tall too. I made a long sofa along the sliding door wall and had a bit which folded out to create a big double bed. Solution re bed is a large locker door at end of bed with a slide out box section for your feet that u simply lock to end of bed with couple catches . Can just be made of plywood and couple coats varnish and bit of insulation. Very cheap to do and will save altering any other parts of van. . Also looks fine on outside of van with slide out bit only seen at night. Materials should be less than £100 and only couple hours work involved . Hope u get sorted, Gary.

Hi Dee, a girl after my own heart. I just turned 60 but with covid restrictions and inability to do the van build myself or get MOTs arranged here (in NI we have specialist MOT centres - nightmare), my van hasn’t had anything done other than readied for the MOT. I’ve been dreaming and planning and changing my mind on the layout for the last year, but I’ve learnt so much on utube about plumbing and heating and electrics. I’ve not made it easy for myself by getting a newer van. Oh no, for sentimental reasons (🤦♀️) I bought an ford mk2 1983 ex ambulance for goodness sake. Oh yes the rust/paint job is going to be interesting 🤔. Anyway I’ve joined a few van life in line clubs but they seem GB based. Being in Northern Ireland I feel cut off from the van life community. I don’t care what age people are but there’s nothing like getting together and sharing similar stage in life issues. Menopause in summer in a tin can anybody?. Hopefully we will both get our vans on the road and maybe get some meet ups arranged for those of u that have more life experience shall we say lol. Xx

Just subscribed and am absolutely loving your videos. You are both amazing. I am originally from the North East so it brought back lots of memories of my childhood seeing you visit Whitby x
When we went caravanning there were 2 adults, 2 children and 2 large dogs in the van, so condensation could be bad. But we had a skylight to open an inch or two. And i stocked up on cheap chemical dehumidifiers from pound shops. Also found the mattresses could get damp underneath, so bought from a garden centre trellis to rest and lift the mattress up and get air to circulate
Hi pal y don't you look at putting. Flares on the side of the van it will give you extra 3 inch on each side of your van pal and then it will be a lot better for you and a lot cheaper than change the van pal

Whitby looks so lovely and I'm glad you know someone to help get the bed sorted! If you're still looking for a quick solution - could you build a pull out platform to fill the space between the kitchen unit and the other wall and then pivot the existing mattress round to sleep each night? Not sure if it's 4ft wide in that space. The actual mattress won't be longer but you'll at least be able stretch fully without hitting the wall of the van and it'll make things easier until you get it adapted properly or buy a bigger van. Hope you're in a better state of mind about van life soon, you're doing amazingly so far coping with winter in the north!
another great video, some beautiful drone footage. Can't wait for part two 😀

Lack of sleep is horrible. I hope you get things sorted soon. You’re both so lovely and I love your videos.

Thank you Mandy 💚
The bubblewrap not only stops condensation on the windows but it's great insulation. Just put your hand an inch from a bubblewrapped window and one without. You can feel the difference in cold.

Magic stuff
I really appreciate such honesty on van life. Your channel is so refreshing seeing places that are attainable for me to go to rather than the usual tropical environments or circumnavigations.
