I had the distinct honour of being one the the many talented film editors to work on the Rush in Rio DVD. I was especially fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to actually edit this song! As a lifelong Rush fan, it was definitely a huge career highlight. There were a ton of challenges making this video work, from 22 cameras to choose from and my sole desire to only choose close up angles of Alex, Geddy, and Neil. Man those boys could play, especially live! But, a fourth member of the band showed up that evening, the incredible crowd from Brazil! They were actually singing along to a song with not lyrics! You will never witness anything like this again. Thanks for sharing this video, it brought back some great memories.

Dude! I'm 51 years old. I fell in love with Rush in '81 #Signals. Hands down - Greatest band ever. I was blessed enough to see them live 4 times in my life. And I got to take my kids who knows every song.

Thank you Brazil for giving Rush the love they deserve....from Canada!

YYZ are the call letters for the Toronto Airport (Rush's hometown). The beginning of the song is Morse code for YYZ.

The way Geddy tells it, there's a special feeling of excitement when at the end of a tour they see the YYZ tags on their luggage. The song is meant to evoke that "I'm going home" feeling.

This memorable show was performed for 40,000 people and the night before in São Paulo, at the Pacaembu stadium, it was their all-time record solo show: 60,000 insane jumping and screaming long-awaited fans. How do I know? BECAUSE I WAS THERE! 🔥🎆

I have to say "thank you, Rio!!!" Because this old white boy, from 'Middle America' cries tears of joy every time I watch this crowd go absolutely nuts for my boys!!

7:30 If you look at the ground under Geddy's feet, you'll see a large keyboard that he plays with his feet, too. The man is just an incredible musitian.

Neil Peart’s drum solo from this same show is insane. 8 min long and basically a clinic on every style and genre of percussion.

I've said this on other channels... Before this performance, YYZ was an instrumental.

Rush didn't sell a lot of records in South America. They didn't know that bootlegging records/tapes is a big industry down there. They had tons of fans but just didn't know it. So this is the first time they had ever played there. These fans had been waiting for decades to see Rush. They sang along to every song.

Toronto is the band's hometown, the Airport code is YYZ, which they go to know very well over the years of flying in and out of it. Also the opening is Morris Code for YYZ -.-- -.-- --.. Da Dit Da Da Da Dit Da Da Da Da Dit Dit

YYZ is the Airport code for Toronto.Pearson international airport.Alex had a pilot's license for a small plane.back then.One day when they were coming back to Toronto they heard the morse code for YYZ Toronto..Like dot the dot dot dash.We come back to Toronto so often.our home.Let's do a song for that sound.If you fly to Toronto.Your bags have YYZ on then.

This track ( YYZ) is an instrumental and was named after the tags on flying back home to Toronto Canada, YYZ is code for that city by the airlines.

YYZ is the airport code for Pearson International Airport, which is, yes, in Toronto. But Toronto has a couple of smaller airports which have their own airport code.

Why they are called the "holy trinity" of progressive rock. Individually, they are masters. Together, WOW! No words.....

Fun facts.... When Rush got the invitation to come and play in Brazil they said Naah... It wont be a lot of audience cause we are not that famous.... Luckily they was talked in to it, and the band stated it was the best tour and audience they ever had... Imagine 180.000 people jumping around, singing every song...! The whole concert is just amazing! Rush is one of the best rock band ever! Delivering on every concert. RIP. Neil Perth♥️

You have to watch "Working Man" live in Cleveland Performed in 2011, Alex and Getty were 58 and Neil 59 years old. This is the last encore song of a 3 hour concert and the energy and musicianship they display is incredible. I've been a Rush fan for 40 years and saw them live 3 times in the 70's and 80's and this Cleveland performance simply blew me away.

Rush has inspired UNCOUNTABLE number of bands and musicians with their muisc. The same did Neil Peart to the drummers, RIP Neil.... You should watch his drum solo, that's a really tasteful musicianship.

I don't know, they had been playing for almost 3 hours by that point in the concert and they were in their late '50s for that show. Seems to me like they could have been tired maybe? Well the crowd is sure into it, so why don't you try it out Tom and see what you think (Hehehe!)

FYI, "Y-Y-Zed" is the airport abbreviation for Toronto's airport. The opening rhythmic drums and guitar/bass riff is Morse Code for YYZ. The song is about returning home, since they were based out of Toronto.

RUSH!!! Neil Peart (The Professor) passed away from brain cancer January 7, 2020. He's considered one of the greatest rock drummers of all time and inspired literally millions of aspiring drummers (including myself). He was also the main lyricist and a many time published author. He is sorely missed. If you listen closely, the crowd is singing the melody line of the guitar.

The most fitting description of Neil that I've heard: "Your favorite drummer's favorite drummer." Considering that when you were counting the drums in his kit, you totally missed the complete xylophone in full view, and in his solos the kit will actually spin around to give him access to different parts of the kit... there has never been and never will be his equal. Sure, Bonham might have matched him in influence and there are a few others with similar technical skill, but as a combination of the two he's truly in a class by himself. Not to mention, he wrote most of the band's lyrics.

Geddy Lee will show you what a bass part in a song should be. I play guitar, but when I discovered Rush I had to go get a bass just to learn some of Geddy's parts. He's my favorite, right up there with Chris Squire of Yes. The hallmark of Rush is creating complex compositions that flow smooth and don't sound like you need a music degree to appreciate. Neil has so many drums because it's basically two drum kits. His platform rotates to access the other kit. One kit is mostly acoustic, while the other is a hybrid electronic kit. I'd suggest Xanadu live from 1981 Exit Stage Left tour. This is the gold standard of live performances. All three play multiple instruments to pull this off. Geddy plays bass, 12-string, keyboards, and synth pedals (kinda like organ pedals). Alex has both 6- and 12- sting guitars and plays synth pedals as well. Neil has an orchestral percussion section at his disposal. You will be amazed at how much music three guys can put out live. Cheers!

I am the same. I am a guitarist and played a bit of bass, but never really wanted to learn every bass part to every song like I did when I came across Geddy Lee. He showed me what a bass can really do and a level of writing for bass like I had never heard before. Since I am also a song writer, I heard Lee’s playing and thought to myself, “that’s what I want my bass to sound like in every song!”. The way Geddy comes up with a riff for every single drum fill that Neil writes and it always accents Peart’s fill perfectly. That is when I learned that a bass player and drummer, at that level, could create a sound almost good enough to be a band alone. They prove this on many songs where Geddy and Neil will be carrying out the main body of the song while Alex is just hitting whole note chord accents on every other measure, like “Distant Early Warning”, “The Big Money” or “Marathon” to name a few. They actually do that in a lot of songs, proving Neil and Geddy can sound like a band by themselves. That is why Alex can just go wild, knowing that Geddy can double up, filling in 16th note pieces so the sound doesn’t get hollow when he drops out of rhythm to play a guitar solo. People wonder how a three piece band can sound so full and there’s the answer. It’s because Neil and Geddy already sound full by themselves. In an interview, Alex said that Neil and Geddy had already written most of YYZ by themselves before he showed up to practice. Alex was out flying his RC airplanes at La Studios in Canada. That’s why YYZ can sound so full even without the guitar. Yes, Neil is the greatest drummer in rock music, but Geddy is like no other bass player on the planet and is the equivalent of what Neil is to drums on bass. What makes both of them great is their writing. They really think outside the box. I heard an interview with Neil where he was talking about how when Geddy hears a fill Neil plans to use in a new song, he said that Geddy becomes really intense trying to write a perfect riff to match that drum fill. I had always noticed that, but that interview was the first time I heard one of them specifically talk about it. Peart also said that it is those riffs that help make his drumming sound better and I agree with that. I think fewer people recognize that. I’m sure that it did not go unnoticed by you, since you’re like me when it comes to Geddy and breaking down what it is that makes him so great. I’m sure that you knew everything I have mentioned here and much more. I am just like you on that regard. I had never heard any other bass player who wrote and played the kind of stuff like Geddy Lee, then toss in the vocals and keyboards and he has to be one of the most talented musician in the world. Anyone tasked with singing lead vocals, playing bass and keyboards would at least try to simplify the bass stuff, but not Geddy. He only made it more complex and busy in the studio, where he could lay each track individually, but then would have to figure out how to reproduce it live?

Neil's drumkit is actually 2 kits. His main, large one...and a smaller one behind him. For certain songs, he plays the small kit. The drum platform spins around so he's facing the crowd.

YYZ is the airport identifier for the Toronto Airport. That weird little intro pattern is the Morse code for "Y Y Z": Dah Di Dah Dah Dah Di Dah Dah Dah Dah Di Di. To them, the song has the feel of coming home...their home being Toronto...after a long journey. If you listen, it's full of snippets of music they call "exotic", since "travel is supposed to be exotic". And airports are full of emotion, places where people are always coming and going.

The band never actually "broke up". Neil passed away from glioblastoma in early 2020. First self-titled album in 1974 had a different drummer. Neil joined for their second album in 1975. I was fortunate enough to see Rush in concert a dozen times. Every single show was worth 10x the price of admission. Nothing better than seeing three guys on stage having the time of their lives doing whatever it takes to entertain an audience of fans. I will always be immensely grateful that I managed to get my kids to 3 of their shows along with their final R40 tour.

A little background on this tour. Lots of comments below all wonderful. But this was a come back tour for the band. They had taken 5 or so years off because of what was going on in Neil's life. Right after the "Test for Echo" Tour, they received a call that Neil's daughter was in a car wreck. Unfortunately, she did not make it. Then about a year later his wife got cancer and passed away. He was a very lost soul. He got on his bike and rode most of North America and beyond. Listen to the tunes Vapor Trails and Ghost Rider. Then read Neil's book The Ghost Rider. This was the band's first tour back after all that happened.

Simply the best 3 piece rock band in history, no contest, over. Please watch Deep Purple Child in Time live 1970…epic recording!

Rush never broke up. They retired. Find another band with that much success and talent with absolutely 0 drama or arrogance. Here’s hoping Geddy and Alex put some more music out there!

Alex said that for about a year after Neil died, he couldn't make himself pick up his guitar, but recently he and Geddy have apparently been noodling about with their instruments. I mean, it's not like you can just go out and find someone to replace Neil Peart, but they can still be the foundation of a good band for as long as arthritis stays away...

Just to expand on the last commenter: YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's airport, which appears on all of your checked bags. The song is meant to emulate all of the emotions one feels when returning home after being away. The tempo of the song captures at some points the hustle and bustle of a busy airport, while the slow breakdown represents the wait for loved ones and the emotions encountered at those reunions. (Then right back to the hustle and bustle!) And yes, the opening bars of the song are the dot-dash-dot-dot-dash Morse code that the aircraft's transponder hears from Pearson International Airport. Pretty cool that they seamlessly incorporated that into their song about returning "home".

More Rush! More Rush! They have a handful of instrumentals that are great! "Leave That Thing Alone" is my favorite.

I was in a RUSH tribute band on & off for many years. I played bass & synths. Trust me...VERY hard. I had to give it up because I just couldn't do it physically any more. How they did it for so long amazes me. Keep it up! Check out more!

Rush is known mostly for the 80's, but they were a major influence for over 40 years. With hits in the 70's, 80's, 90's, & 00's. Potentially even the 10's. The way that Rush played in all their songs is exactly as you described it. Geddy would play rhythm on Bass that was like other people's solos. All the members of the band were masters of their crafts. Geddy playing Bass, Keyboards, and pedals, all while singing!

These guys at this age keep up this energy for 3 hours , making them one of the best live performers in music , the Drummer Died from brain cancer and was the main lyric writer, This song was also one of the top Guitar hero songs

"Geddy" was named 'GARY' at birth, but supposedly his mother had a thick Eastern European accent so it sounded like 'Geddy' when she said it. It stuck and he eventually actually changed his legal name from GARY to GEDDY.

Neil was so broken hearted, he hopped on his motorcycle and took a 55000 mile tour of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico by himself. He unfortunately was diagnosed with a brain tumor (glioma)in 2016 and passed away on January 7th 2020. Alex and Geddy both played keyboards(mostly Geddy)and midi foot pedal keyboards on the floor with their feet.(Oh and Geddy plays electric and acoustic guitar also). Thanks for the great reaction!!

I saw that too and I have a hard time believing it. 40,000 is like a crowd in the stands at a MLB game. This looks like WAY more than that.

Rush were a literal power trio, with everyone being a near master of their instruments. They mainly came up in the 70s, but the 80s were when many (including myself) discovered them, along with some carryover into the 90s. Unfortunately they are no longer a thing, with drummer/lyricist Neil Peart passing away due to brain cancer in 2020.

Neil isn't a drummer. He is the Professor.

You need to listen to more Rush. Neil Peart passed away from brain Cancer in January of 2020. They played a 40 year tour that I was able to see and then retired mainly because Neil wasn't feeling good during the last tour. One of my favorites is Mystic Rhythm's if you have a chance to review that song.

As thee previous person SAID, YYZ is the name of the VOR at Toronto-Pearson Intl. Airport. A VOR is a navigation beacon. When you dial it into your NavCom (radio) you listen to the Morse Code that is constantly broadcast to make sure you've dialed in the correct signal. (Disclaimer-I'm a pilot) Alex Lifeson is a pilot and all 3 band members were landing in Toronto in Lifeson's plane. I can't remember which member got the idea to write a song using the cadence of YYZ, but that's what happened. Rush, much of the time are each essentially playing a solo (as you remarked) and magically, they blend together to form a song. As you remarked, the roughly 20,000 people that make up this crowd in Rio are singing the non-existent lyrics to this instrumental. In a video Peart said the song reminds each member how good it feels to be coming home. The guitar solo Lifeson wrote for this song is supposed to have an "Asian" feel-indicative of traveling. I see your reaction is a year old so I apologize if I'm repeating information scattered in the comments, but I didn't read but just the previous one. BTW, there's a video of all 3 members trying to "play" Tom Sawyer on that game you mentioned (Guitar Hero?). They failed 😂😂😂 so don't feel bad you did too! Neil Peart could not continue playing to HIS standard after the 2015 R40 tour. This was due to arthritis and mainly a brain tumor called a glioblastoma (Glioblastoma Multiforme). (Disclaimer-I'm also a physician). The cancer was never revealed to the public until after his death on January 7, 2020. I never met Neil Peart. He was my favorite musician and his lyrics (he wrote the lyrics to 99% of Rush's songs) were a constant companion growing up and throughout my life. He is one of the few people I did not know personally that I had to grieve their death. I cried off and on for several days after his death was announced. I'm 55 years old and have been listening to Rush since 1978. They are by FAR my favorite musical group.
