FUN FACT: Geddy's laundry dryers actually tumble during the show, and a roadie (sometimes dressed in any number of costumes) will come out, PUT MONEY into the coin slots, and add/remove clothing like he's really doing the wash. Then, before the encore at the end of the show, the band remove RUSH T-shirts from the dryers and throw them into the crowd. Typically, the shirts say something like "I got this shirt from dryer #3 at the Rush show". Highly collectable items, since they were only made for that purpose!

Rush was a great Canadian rock band formed in 1968. The band's style changed over the years, from a blues-inspired hard rock beginning, later moving into progressive rock, then a period marked by heavy use of synthesizers, before returning to guitar-driven hard rock since the end of the 1980s. They had a lot of great songs such as "The Spirit Of Radio", "Not Fade Away", "In The Mood", "Working Man", "Bad Boy", "Fly By Night", "Limelight", "Red Barchetta", "Tom Sawyer", "The Trees", "Subdivisions", "Closer To The Heart", "Xanadu", "Anthem" etc.

On all the tours that came after Moving Pictures was released, whenever they saw YYZ on their luggage tags, they'd know that they were heading home to their families. The composition here was meant to represent the hustle and bustle of moving through a busy airport, and the drop in tempo when Geddy is playing the keyboards was meant to represent a brief pause to reunite with family and friends before going right back to the hustle and bustle. Great reaction; looking forward to more! 🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🔥 🔥 🔥

There were nearly 60,000 people at this concert and did you hear the audience singing along to this monster instrumental? You got it right about the dryers.. and chicken rotisseries. They’ve also had vending machines, and popcorn poppers!! Best band ever!! Since you like the drum setup so much, I recommend “Neil Peart solo - Live in Frankfort”. Sadly Neil Peart the drummer died back in jan 2020. The saying goes. Think of you favourite drummer. Their favourite drummer is Neil. Says all you need. Top three rock drummers of all time. Hi guys, great reaction! Actually we do pronounce it YYZED here in Canada for most part. Nice that you had the back story. It was Alex Lifeson the guitarist who was flying them in to Toronto as he is a licensed pilot. The code stuck with Geddy and Neil and they started writing the song. Alex came in later and added his part. There were 40,000.00 people in the crowd and Alex Lifeson will also use foot pedals as well as Geddy. Rush put out a number of instrumentals. Where's my thing/ Here it is live in Dallas is a good one which also includes a drum solo. Also La villa Strangiato the official music video is another instrumental based on a series of nightmares that Alex Lifeson had . Cheers 🇨🇦

@@brentscott5359 Yes, Americans do pronounce the letter Z as Zee. I suppose as your British offspring, we were trying to stay consistent withe the previous letters in the alphabet....A-eee, B-eee, C-eee, D-eee, E-eee, G-eee, etc. So, what happened at the end. Was the Ed sound supposed to symbolize that we've come to the end? Was there a guy name Ed who was involved somehow? Any history on that? Just curious, cuz your pronunciation does take a left turn there at the end and isn't consistent with the rest of the alphabet. Also when you use the letter Z in words, is the ED sound there? For instance do you pronounce it ze(d)bra or zebra, (long e sound)? Sincere question.

Next live Rush song should be Working Man (Live in Cleveland 2011 Time Machine Tour), followed by Xanadu (Live 1981 Exit Stage Left tour). I would also highly recommend the original studio version of Working Man, as it was this song from their debut album that got them played on the radio for the first time, in the city of Cleveland, which is one thing that makes that 2011 show so special. Neil is surrounded by 2 integrated drum kits screwed directly into a rotating riser. One side is mostly acoustic, the other mostly electronic, and there are numerous additional triggers and pedals strategically placed throughout the rig, including a Mallet Kat MIDI marimba which is programmable. He even has blowers to help keep his hands dry! You should definitely check out some of his drum solos, notably Live in Frankfurt, YYZ live from the Exit Stage Left tour (solo is in the middle of YYZ), O Baterista, and others. Neil utilizes every single piece of that kit.

Geddy didn't downsize; they started using the stadium/arena speakers for the bass sounds. Correctly, Geddy did feel naked on his side, not having amps, so they looked for other things to fill his side. Thinking of Meatloaf, do “Paradise by the Dashboard Light.” Watch the live video. As for Canadian trios, look into Triumph.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

The reason the bass was more heavily emphasized is due to Geddy and Neil having written the song when Alex wasn't around. He added the guitar parts later. It's also why the bass and drums have those mini-solos in there, but the guitar doesn't. Wanted to just add that I didn't think a couple of Brits would need to be told this, but the song is pronounced Why Why Zed, not zee. 😉

Watch Yes perform Roundabout at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. Pay attention to the bass player. Geddy Lee is the only man alive that could replace Chris Squire. Great reaction. The song was originally written only for bass and drums. The guitar was added after. Ronnie Barker eat your heart out.

Geddy Lee said, talking about how this song came about, that it was himself and Neil (the drummer) wanted to do an instrumental song that would be a "bass and drums extravaganza.". Then, Alex came in and added his guitar thing to it.. and they had a gem.

Its been discovered, using modern medical science, that people can experience a state where the entire group have their heartbeats synchronized during a musical event. Not sure if it takes place in this type of musical setting, but I like to think so. Music is powerful to us humans. Especially Rush.

Great reaction, guys, and I say that as an American who's live in Canada the past 25 years, not far from Toronto, and as a lifelong fan of Rush for their incredible musicianship, for their deep friendship that kept the band together, in studio and touring, for 40 years, and for the way they took musical craft seriously but never themselves, an unusual trait in North America. I could suggest a couple of dozen Rush classics, but since so many have already, will make a different request that I think would blow you away with music and humour, from the smash-hit musical Hamilton, one of only two songs done by one of the all-time greats of Broadway doing a Brit, "You'll be Back." While there are many videos of the song live from people in the audience, the sound quality is awful, so I suggest this studio recorded version that featured the original cast instead: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l396sI-aobOweJs.html

*9.3+* Rush are fiercely talented. 😂 I very much like the crowd singing along to a song with no lyrics. 😄 Some of the 'washey' sound breaks strongly remind me of 1970s Prog Rock which used a lot of Mellotron ①. Geddy Lee credits several bassists including Chris Squire of _Yes_ for his sound, and playing 'Lead Bass'. Let me cause some controversy!! 😉 Peart was a brilliant drummer. He played like a 10yo Girl! 😱😄 _"YYZ" - Rush / Covered by Yoyoka 10yo_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/nnt5trmiYbTblqg.html She even dances in the breaks. 😃 To be fair, Peart composed the drums, and Yoyoka is following his lead. She doesn't have his drum kit, but does well. _Yes - Chris Squire 'Lead Bass':_ I couldn't find any contemporaneous live performances with good audio quality by _Yes_ in the '70s. Some album tracks which have 'Lead Bass' (it's often sounds an octave higher than is 'traditional'): _Yes - "Starship Trooper"_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/dn-a1suDg5aWc9Y.html 9m27s _Yes - "Roundabout" (Original 1971)_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4Om1LCGZNDKaMY.html 8m36s - the bass is funky _"Yours Is No Disgrace"_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y5qJ18ankZS-pdo.html 9m40s Bill Bruford's drumming is sublime too. These are *long Prog Rock* songs, without a good contemporary live video. So not very reaction (or BP1?) friendly. Worth a listen. Maybe skipping a minute or two to hear the bass if Prog Rock is not 'your cup of tea'. It's clear what inspired some of Geddy Lee's playing. Geddy Lee even replaced Chris Squire (who'd died) when Yes were inducted into "The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame" Best Wishes. ☮ ① Wikipedia: _"The _*_Mellotron_*_ is an electro-mechanical musical instrument developed in Birmingham, England, in 1963. It is played by pressing its keys, each of which pushes a length of magnetic tape against a capstan, which pulls it across a playback head. As the key is released, the tape is retracted by a spring to its initial position. Different portions of the tape can be played to access different sounds."_ IIRC the tape lasted less than 10 seconds (7 seconds?), so the 'washy' effect was partly caused by that.
