One of the questions we get asked the most at Electrifying.com is what seven seat electric cars do you recommend? Until now we’ve only been able to suggest the van-like Citroen e-Berlingo, the lacklustre and surprisingly small Mercedes EQB or theTesla Model X, which tops £100,000 and is impossible to get hold of.
So while the EV9 may be the most expensive car Kia has built, there’s a great opportunity here for the Korean brand if they get the EV9 right - and from our first look at a pre-production car it seems like they are.
Kia has transformed itself over the past decade from a budget brand to a one able to take on the premium players and the EV9 stands out against the large premium cars from the likes of BMW and Audi, thanks to its fresh modern look and a high quality interior.
Joint Ginny as she takes an in-depth look at the final production version of the new Kia EV9 and don’t forget to read our review of the car over at Electrifying.com.
Will the new Kia EV9 be on your wish list? Do you think Kia is heading in the right direction with the EV9? Would you choose one over a Tesla Model X or Mercedes EQB? As always, we love to hear what you think so get get typing in the comments below.

Awful rip off, having to subscribe to use something fitted to your vehicle that you've already paid for. And another big inefficient SUV lump. For goodness sake.....
Features on demand - that's a big no from me. Any manufacturer who fits all the bells and whistles as standard but won't activate them until you pay extra is to be avoided. It's a shame because it looks as though they've got most things right here.

@@Demobot1the only way it makes sense is if it noticeably reduces the cost of the car. If based on the cost of the car you expect those features and they want to charge extra, then they aren’t going to sell. Who wants to buy an $80k vehicle and then have to subscribe to heated seats. If they plan to have a subscription system for heated seats, automatic high beam change and other similar than it's a total NO on my side. If I can pay a one time fee, after purchasing a certain configuration, to have heated seats enabled for all eternity (until they break) then it's not a problem.

Kia and Hyundai are offering appealing EVs as mass brands. Tesla focuses on high-tech FSD and range efficiency and all of their cars have some sporty kicks. I love the look! And the rotating middle chairs!
I think the Features on Demand part was lost in translation. The subscription service is limited to software features such as music streaming or data useage for the digital key feature etc. hardwarewise you get what you pay for.
I don't mind on-demand features IF you pay once to keep them. I don't want to have to pay year over year for heated seats or an around-view camera system. It actually makes sense in the focus of mass manufacturing to have everything installed, but only enabling what you want. This means when you purchase a car off the lot that doesn't have heated seats built into the car (what happens today), you don't have a car that is sitting on the lot because of that. Instead, ALL cars have heated seats, and when (if) you want them, pay a single price to enable them. But screw everything about yearly subscriptions. Make it a buy once and get it forever and I'm fine with it.
Thanks for the video. These car companies are getting too greedy with subscription-based features, and even considering not making those features transferable.
I will keep my EV6 which has all the size and tech I need. I am sure it will be a winner with a long waiting list. Kia needs to up its production rate, they are making some very desirable cars, but here in UK, probably 1 year waiting list for EV6, unless you hit lucky.
As someone mentioned earlier the problem I see with "on demand services" is that the car has been fitted with these devices so in fact you have already paid for them so they should be turned on. I can't see KIA or any other manufacturers taking off £500+ because you do not want these features added. I do think that all cars should be fitted with all the safety tech though, blind spot, collision avoidance etc. nice car though it looks very big, think I would aim for a smaller EV when I have to change.
Really good presenter and wonderful filming! I have Sorento now and this is my new dream car! The ev6 was way to small
I look forward to jailbreaking my EV9.

Wasn't a fan of the Kia EV design but this is one I can get behind!!
Question is will Kia also have differently equipped models or all the models the same and are you just renting some features. And is it a yearly or monthly subscription. Either way hate the idea of yearly subscriptions
I wish this prototype was the same color blue as the concept. LOVE that color blue a lot!! I think it’s cool to be able to add on features remotely, but I’m not sure I like that a new owner would have to buy them again. Kia doesn’t hold their value well here in the US. At least certain models. We had a 2015 Soul top of the line we bought at less than a year old and it started literally falling apart 2 years later at just 3 years old. We traded it for a new Jeep Compass before it really started to get bad. We loved the Soul for about the first year we had it then quickly lost that love. It was really disappointing because it was such a cute, fun little hamster wagon!!
I wonder if the safety features work as they disable at random on my Niro ev I got this year and Kia UK is not interested in fixing safety features. Only saying they licence dealers.
Subscription is a sin.

Subscription extras will ultimately push up the cost of producing the cars. When it comes to second, third, fourth hand, if these extras aren’t transferable, how that affect the used price? Also, as a used customer having to re-subscribe as a new customer, will these extras, as a new customer come with any warranty? Suspect manufactures will also have some substantial GDPR issues to work through too.
What is a point of rotating chairs if you do not have space for 2 pair legs between them? Only to put baby chair or to put legs on seat in front?
I love it! I've bought my Ioniq5 a year ago, and I love every single aspect of my car but when the EV9 comes out, my Hyundai will be traded for it!

Subscription model makes sense only if its MUCH cheaper than options themselves. A single game costs 50usd, but a subscription that offers ALL of the games is around 10usd. They even sell their consoles below their realistic price just so that they could sell games and subscriptions. Offer us a cheap base model price + reasonable subscription and I'm in! ...we all know though thats not how they are gonna start though, not until they learn their lesson.
Kia have been doing some great things these last few years. Whilst I really like the interior, sadly I’m not a fan of the exterior look (I wish I was, as I could really use a 7-seater EV!). Still, with such a people carrier shortage on the market, this is bound to be a success so long as it’s not priced out of contention.

Features on demand - another nope from me. Manufacturers need to understand that things as a service (Spotify, netflix etc) exist because those things get updated regularly and frequently, which makes a subscription competitive with continuously buying new. Cost of ownership for some people is leasing or PCR from new, so subscription might work for them if the cost is equal, but it'll tank in the used market. This in turn drives down residual value, which drives up leasing cost, which affects new sales....
KIA design are just knocking it out the park, never thought I would looking at KIAs over other brands
Price in USD or CAD?
That price tag for an over sized bonneted MPV, you then have to rent some of the features… but you don’t get a rear screen wiper. I’m surprised they’re not charging extra for using the wheels.
Also sliding rear doors may be more practical and be cool on an SUV, especially in car parks and families getting in and out.

What an excellent and thorough review on a new car! As far as paid subscription, I think we should revolt and protest. Many people have cut off their cable just so their money can be shifted towards Netflix, Amazon, Prime, Hulu, and other subscriptions. Paying for subscriptions on a car is offensive and ridiculous and I will bet you a fountain soda that it will end in about three years-I hope. Thanks!
It’s nice, but what’s the point of conference seats if there’s no leg room? I’d still prefer an ID Buzz.
If this size of car is the future, how soon will we see all the current car park spaces throughout the UK repainted to make sure that each vehicle has sufficient space to avoid damaging the adjacent vehicle when doors are flung open? Once subscription services are put in place, it will be so easy for manufacturers have total control over price rises on those subscriptions. Do some research on Adobe's Photoshop if you want to see how it's done!
Look so nice, waiting for the us version release
i love the exterior design and the interior overall EXCEPT for the rotating seats. In the video you can see how little room there is when the seats are facing each other. You and your friends will be interlocking your knees if the seats are in that configuration. A wasted bit of engineering which i would rather have something like removable 2nd row seats for the option of more cargo space. But overall, I'm excited to purchase one. I've had a deposit with my local dealer for the EV9 for months!
Just one small point for you. Tesla doesn’t offer level 3 driving. They offer level 2. In Europe I think I’m right in saying that only Mercedes currently offer level 3 driving, and only in Germany, and only on divided highways in traffic at less than 40mph. Level 3 just isn’t out there yet so if Kia have cracked and received regulatory approval in Europe then that’s a big deal. And subscriptions are awful. It’s fair enough to be charged extra for the features you want to enable. It goes against the way it’s been done for decades but I can see reasons why (although I’m some cases it will add weight for something you can’t use). But once bought, they should be part of the vehicle and passed on. This “next owner pays again” idea is just a rip off, and also will destroy second hand value (not the manufacturers care about that, but owners should). Great video. Love the car. Looks absolutely huge though for British roads, garages and car park spaces! Those nice wide back doors could cause some damage to cars in adjacent spaces!
Good unbiased review Ginny - only omission was not mentioning the #Mercedes #MQV when it comes to 7 seat EVs and the new one has a 100kwh battery too . Have to say the #EV9 is a bit of a let down versus it’s fantastic concept they should’ve kept the doors and dash for the wow factor . This new idea of charging monthly for features is concerning and it’ll affect the used market if they’re going to try and recharge people for them it’s a concern it’s a big concern to the purchase market but it might work if lease companies move into the used market I think cat ownership will be rare in the future particularly with expensive EVs - what we need is more cheaper chinese cars to shake up the market - the BYD Atto 3 is overpriced to make market share can’t see people choosing it over say a Cupra Born ( my comment ended up on the byd atto !
