@@phillroo7871 Making the EV in China is the only way to compete with Tesla and BYD since both manufacturers make their EVs in China. The Chinese-sourced EV battery is both technically better and affordable. I believe that all EVs priced above 65k do not use a Chinese-sourced battery, suggesting that it is pretty hard to cut the price to be lower than 65k and still provide a decent driving range without a Chinese-sourced battery.

After two years I just made the first regular service and had absolutely no problems. First car in 54 years that in two years just needed 4 wheel changes as we have hard winters in Swiss mountains where we live. And a had mostly potent German premium in similar performance classes so also TCO is far from used. It’s one of our cheapest cars besides our Tesla business fleet. Including investments for PV and powerwall and 11 kWh chargers (we charge in 10 seconds and have climatized car in the morning) since our first Tesla in 2008 we started to safe (inflation included) a high 30% on car cost and had nearly no more downtimes. Also we are FREE from manipulative oil prices and petrol or diesel from politically questionable sources working against our interests of democracy, religion and freedom and war!
Thanks for the sneak peak, greetings from the Netherlands
That magnetic pads on back of second row seats are just such a clever design. It shows Kia pays a lot of attention to details and really wants to make a car for users. Also, the airplane type table behind passenager seat was great.

Great to see more EV choice - the 2024/25 year is going to be super interesting!
I like it! Being able to take it camping and sleep inside is a great option, as well as just being able to store long things in it.
I’m always excited to see what KIA is rolling out. This looks great but the narrow visibility from the driver’s seat of the dash screen is a bummer. You’d think they’d be a bit more detail oriented to notice this.
Don't really like the wheels but the rest of it looks pretty good.
Looks pretty good, price dependant… great review, thanks

Hyundai’s Kona & Kia’s Niro nailed it with efficiency and range. But since both of the aforementioned, they’ve gone for the US market model. Bonjour from France and thanks for a great review of this interesting car. I've owned an e-Niro since 2019 and it has been faultless. My local Kia dealer says we won't get the EV5 until next year, this may be because Kia have a plant in Slovakia and may produce it there to take full advantage of any European country incentives. We don't put tariffs on cars coming from China as the USA does but anything built in Europe will get incentives, certainly here in France. The key to EV5 success is of course making them in volume.
I wonder if the ev5 and ev9 design language will influence the new kia ute or will they steal some stuff from the ranger?

One difference is Tesla has runs on the board. In terms of reliability and resale value, their models are a known quantity. We don't know how the Chinese KIA will compare until it's been selling here for a couple of years. One thing going in KIA's favour is its dealer network, as mentioned by Paul.
I think my family would LOVE one of these. Presently driving an MG4 and either want something more affordable like a BYD Seagull if it ever comes here or this which is a bit more aspirational for a lower income earner like myself.
I assume Kia has to remove the middle DRL section because the LEDs are stiffer than a plain piece of plastic. They should be able to engineer something better at some point...
Looks great. Dual motor would be good if the price is right. But how annoying will the safety features be? If not intrusive noise wise, this could be a good seller for KIA!
want one!
It will be a good competition to model y

Hi Paul. A bit off topic here. Give that the ex Holden proving ground is going to be up for sale. And given that of course that's where you guys do the majority of your reviews. How does that look for reviews going forward?? If/when sold. Also given the high profile of the Investors in CarExpert. Have they thought about purchasing the ground?? On the EV5. It will need to be $10k less than the Tesla Model Y for the base spec. For it to seriously challenge for sales.

No NMC possible kinda disappoints me.. sure NMC is better with 80% max charge.. more like 75% but for everyday use, you usually don't need more. I can keep my car with NMC at 50% all the time.. so yeah.. LFP is good, esp today's LFP but if I could choose, I'd prefer NMC over LFP.. seen too many videos from Doctors in battery tech and my take away from it is that a proper managed NMC is superior..
Looks like a blue brick. Isn't a decent drag coefficient necessary for good range?
If anyone is wondering the EV5 is not coming to the US market but will be available in Mexico and Canada. The only vehicle that may enter the US market is the EV3. The US Inflation reduction Act kinda through a wrench into Kia's plan to sell the EV5 in the states due to where I'll be manufactured.

I suspect the shift from EGMP, from NMC battery, from RWD and from 800 v architecture is a money saving exercise - if it manifest as a product at a great price then jobs a good one but if not sadly a fail. Let’s hope the other offerings (EV3 and EV4) which Kia in 2020 announced would all be built on the EGMP are not compromised like this offering. We need competitive pricing to be driven by economies of scale, improved manufacturing technique and innovation leading to cheaper batteries not by compromise on materials, design or technology!
