First Grade Classroom Setup | Day 1 | What Came in my Room?!

Hello teacher friends! So I am definitely super grateful I can start getting my classroom ready in July! I am a first-year (first grade) teacher, so I wanted to document everything I am going through. Open me for info! ♡ see more...
NEW SETUP VIDEOS! bit.ly/MCC2020setupplaylist
This video is the first video for my Classroom Setup Series. I finally got into my classroom, but there is still so much more to do. As a first year teacher, I am definitely not short on ideas, but I only have a month to get my baby up and going, so we will both see how things turn out. Please let me know how your room is coming along! I spent most of Day 1 sorting through what came in my room and cleaning :)

Last year at my new school I moved all of the furniture by myself, then the principal told us to make sure we get a custodian to help us so that we won't scratch the floors... oops lol. But depending on your students, some may have lice or parents who smoke, so putting their jackets next to each other might not be the best thing. & just a reminder to leave space for your students' school supplies.

I think you have done an amazing job. I am in my 36th year of teaching (and still loving it) and I have lost track of how many times I have had to change rooms. At one stage I moved EVERY year for 12 years. I changed years levels a few times, and year levels changed zones the rest of the times. I can't remember a room being totally clean when I moved in, but some were definitely worse than others. A couple of people had a reputation for not cleaning their rooms when they moved and they left things in a really bad condition. Others didn't find out until the last minute, so moving was a mad rush and I totally understood. A few times they were leaving the school and didn't really care. I always work hard to make sure my room is ready for the next person, simply out of respect. I would hate to think that someone was going to have to deal with my mess.Off topic, but you look really good with your hair tied up, so definitely don't worry about that. Setting up a room is a hot and sweaty task. Hair up is the first thing I ever did when my hair was longer.I just subscribed and I look forward to watching how your classroom progresses. Hugs. xx

You should move the coat rack cabinet near the hooks by the front door so you don't block the back exit and so the bags on the hooks are near their jackets. And you could use contact paper from amazon on the cabinet to spice it up (it comes off easy after & easy application)

Mrs. Call's Campers CONGRATULATIONS! I love that you are a teacher, I just wanted to let you know that when I was a first grader I was able to read those read alouds by myself. My mom (who was a teacher) always promoted improving reading as the student was ready, not to keep them from reading stuff they "may not be able to". Trial and error is how students come to love to read. However, I know you'll do amazing! I just remembered what it felt like to be a kid and told that I wasn't allowed to read because "it wasn't my reading level". Your students will love you, good luck!

Goodwill, St. Vincent's, and other thrift stores are the best place to look for children's books! The Goodwill near me sells all children's books for 50 cents! They once told me that the best times to look for books are right before school starts, right after school ends, right before winter break, and right after winter break because those are the times that people tend to clean out their personal libraries. I have gotten so many good books (from Harry Potter to Dr. Seuss, Jan Brett to Eric Carle, and so many more)for my classroom library by doing this and most look brand new or never used!

I have some great books and feel like I have a lot but once I get home and put them in their sorted bins there just isn't enough!! I'm sure you've heard of it but if you need more info, any of us teachers can help you out. I'm sure teachers at your school site are aware as well. There are many alternatives to purchasing your own books. There's nothing wrong with that but there are additional resources for free, cheap or donated books, materials, equipment, furniture, etc. (like donors choose!) Looking forward to watching you!

Megan and Reese My advice would be to do it if you want to even thought it might not pay a lot. You can always do extra activities for extra money, like after school drama or something. I am almost going to start my studies to be a teacher for grade one's and my plan is to do nails for extra money. Follow your heart. If you do what you want, you will be happy!😁

You did a great job! It always takes longer than you expect to start the year! Don’t be discouraged. I had to pack everything up in May because my school was getting new carpet. I’ve been to school two short days and am still working on my books. I’ve taught school for 32 years and 26 years in first grade. I haven’t taught any of the years the same. Growing as an educator benefits your students and I love to learn! Having a solid library is important, especially in first grade. Don’t rush for quantity over quality. Goodwill is a great place to find books. Visit often. Be sure to use Scholastic book orders to earn points for free books. There are also many sources for ebooks. Sorry for rambling.

There was a lot of grime, but maybe the prior teacher had health problems and couldn't clean - or really, who knows. I was in a total of five classrooms during my teaching days and they were rarely clean but I tried not to judge and just make it my own. :) You will feel great when you finish that first day happy but exhausted!

I am so glad I found your channel! I have one more class to finish my bachelors in Early Childhood Development and I am taking my EC-6 content test on the 6th. So nervous about that! I am an aide right now but should start teaching next year and I feel like I have SO much to learn! This is your very first year right? You seem so confident! I am so excited to learn more this year as an aide and really start taking notes and paying attention to things that will help me out next year.

I work in a preschool and buy the majority of my books in the charity shop, can usually get 3 for €2, theres a few cult favourites that I need to buy for September as I cant find them in charity shops and when I am away I do try and pick up a book that I will pay full price for.

Thanks for the video! I am a 3rd year teacher, 2nd year in Grade 1 in Canada. I really enjoyed watching this video and know exactly what its like. :) My classroom library was limited to start but over the last couple years it has grown slowly but rarely have I bought new books. I often go to the thrift store and look for books! There are really book titles and good quality books if you're okay with taking the time to browse. It's my therapy :D Keep up the great work!

I am such a worry wort....but in the importance of safety we have to keep exits clear (I think the code is 3feet) I once moved a shelf and was embarrassed to be informed I had to move the shelf back (fire safety code). And we couldn't have cleaning products in childrens reach...it was to be locked...or removed....it is all for the safety and health of small children...I love how much work you are putting into your room...can't wait to see more..

I’ve got a suggestion for when you set your classroom up next. Work in sections/ quarters. Because when something gets into a clean area you’ll want to clean it up straight away which is a good thing

Wow you had so much to clean! We basically all had to move classrooms this year and before we could leave for summer break we had to get our room seen so we wouldn’t leave a bunch of “junk” for the next teacher and I am so glad they did that because my first year there was so much that I had to clean and get rid of from past teachers. Have you reached out to your school to see if they provide any books? Creating a library is so overwhelming I hope they can help!

When I was in school a couple of my classrooms had wooden boards like your blue one, it was used to cover the ac vent, some of the kids would get really cold having to sit next to it so it was used to cover it sometimes to help the kids not be so cold.. just a thought by where it was placed!
