To stabilize the desks you can zip tie them together. That could minimize the danger to the caddies. You could also velcro the caddies to the desks!

I saw it on Pinterest, but, I drew/traced the trunk of a tree onto canvas and each year my students place a fingerprint. One color for each class. I also write their names on their fingerprint. This was my second year doing it so the students were really happy to be added to our “class tree”. It’s now an end of year tradition! Oh and fellow firstie teacher!

I think flex seating is GREAT for first graders! They are still young and used to “daycare” environments that aren’t as structured so seating for long periods may be a lot more difficult for them to grasp compared to higher grade levels.

MiMi Scott my twins are going into firsts....never been to daycare but they have already done three years of school.....I honestly would not be happy if my twins had flexible seating....having a child with ADHD I would want either a different teacher/classroom or something to change.

Nichole Bird I’m sorry you feel that way. Each child learns different and although you feel flex seating isn’t for them, they may actually thrive better with a seating option. But you are their mother and know best. Best of luck!

You should get one of those Polaroid cameras and film, take pictures throughout the year, let the kids do it too and make a little “yearbook/ end of the year” memory book. They can decorate it with stickers and color around the pictures. You don’t have the buy the film each time, just make copies of them

With the big price of wood, you should paint a tree stump on it. Every school year you should paint a little branch and have the kid either put their finger print or hand print as leaves with there names in or next to it. Eventually over the years, the tree will grow and could also represent how you’ve grown as a teacher.

what about friendship bracelets for a keepsake?? maybe every kid or every group gets a color string and you braid them into bracelets? it’s kind of like a “camp” tradition, too! & for you, every year you can tie the bracelets together and create a decorative chain (eventually)!

My middle school did flexible seating for the 8th grade English classes and it spiced up the room and made learning way more comfortable... I think first graders would really enjoy flexible seating especially the fact that they are little energetic balls of joy so, comfy seats and different options, on where to sit is a GREAT idea!!

I think doing handprint trees would be awesome to fit with the aesthetic of your classroom! Painting a tree on a piece of chart paper and having the kiddos get their palms painted, and placing their hands on the branches as leaves would be super cute! Writing their names in their hands could be a great way to remember them as well!

You don't have to justify anything to anyone. If you want to try it, try it!!! First years of teaching are a learning process and then we gain knowledge. Everyone goes through this. I am going into my 3rd year teaching kindergarten and I am still learning. I think if we don't continue to learn as we teach then you are fooling yourself. I would love to try flexible seating. I am inspired and motivated by you. Keep going and try things out! This is what we all live through and decide as individual teachers! You have me challenging my own thinking and classroom! 👍😉

Mrs. Call's Campers What works for others may not work for you. I have had mentor teachers the last couple of years and a teacher next to me who has been teaching 30 years. Sure, I gain knowledge and ideas from that person but its also learning and adapting as you go. That is the beauty of teaching and changing with your kids.

Kristie King I totally agree with your comment. If we as teachers don't continue to learn and grow, then we are not being a role model for our students. We want them to learn and we foster growth mindsets. We need to be willing to do that too! I am beginning my 18th year and I have to say every year is different. Every year I try to focus on another aspect of my teaching to improve. I had a great role model. My mentor teacher taught first grade for 40 years and even in the last semester, when she knew she was going to retire, she still attended workshops to make her teaching even better.

Laurie Williams I think this is a mindset most teachers think about but many are trying to just make it through the day. I completely agree with everything you said. If we want new teachers to continue to come to the profession, we need to be supportive and helpful. Everyone was there at one time. If I ever stop learning, I would be bored. ♡

I am also a first year teacher and will be teaching 1st grade this year. I wanted to do flexible seating. I asked my mentor teacher for advice, who did flex seating in her 3rd grade class. She suggested beginning the year with all students in regular chairs and have flexible options in centers and library areas. Then slowly add in a new seating option, one at a time as they can handle it. I love your classroom!

When you talked about a keepsake, I thought of my memory box! My teammate showed me her box and I LOVED IT! So it’s more of a keepsake for the teacher year to year: take a shoebox or other box and have your kiddos fill it with things they want you to remember them by. I had kids leave drawings, cards, little toys, and I also put in it the popsicle sticks I had their names on, plus a “first place” ribbon from an event we won. It’s a sweet way to look back on your years of teaching! I LOVE watching your videos. You are so sweet and positive, you are going to ROCK your first year! I am going into my second year teaching and learned SO much last year, it’s honestly insane! The biggest thing I learned is to trust yourself and know that every day you will improve as a teacher!

Honestly, as a fifth year teacher I can tell you that you have so many awesome ideas and a great perspective on what’s going to work or not. I have found that you can make ANYTHING work with ANY age student as long as you’re willing to put in the time/work for setting expectations and procedures. You also have to feel out your students and class because that will determine so much. But, you have to meet them first! I did flexible seating with first graders and it worked so well! I find that kids are capable of so much more than most people think they are if they are just given the opportunity to do it!

We do this in theatre, on the first day to remember everyone we go into a circle and each person comes up with something they like that starts with the first letter of their name. For example “hello I am Tabitha and I love to tap dance” than the next person says “that is Tabitha and she likes to tap dance, I’m christina and I love cats” and it goes on until everyone finishes. It has worked from ages 5-17 really well 🙂

I never put in perspective how much a classroom is really like the teacher's personal project rather than being permanently how it comes. I adore how your classroom is turning out and it has helped me to realize how much I'd love to have a themed classroom of my own someday! I also love the idea of flexible seating. I would've loved to have that in my classrooms growing up.

I absolutely LOVE your videos! Don't worry too much about comments you get. You are constantly going to get conflicting advice from everyone on pretty much anything you do - both online and in real life! You have to do what works best for you and the only way of knowing what works best for you is trying things out. I teach Kindergarten and I do a teeny bit of flexible seating, but I also know that there are plenty of K teachers that do flex seating full time and it works great, so I have no doubt that it will work for 1st. However, more important than any of your decorations, your planning, and your prep is the fact that you obviously care so much about your students even before you have even met them. THAT is what is going to truly make or break you as a great teacher!

As a parent of a child with ADHD flexible seating would be interesting....it is not something our school does so I am just not sure how it would work. In pre-k(he did two years) and in kindergarten they have tables not desk....he struggles with sitting still and not moving and getting out of his seat...he would be all over a room if allowed and then I feel like he would be a huge distraction to others(which is my huge concern for me). Also he needs a super structured environment so an assigned seat is a must!!!

You could make you’re own yearbook for each student. Save one art project, a writing lesson - include a picture of them from the beginning of the year and the end of the year. Keep them all in a special folder and assemble at the end of the year. You could add in special notes or little praise/growth reports throughout the year.

My favorite class keepsake that I still have was from first grade. At the end of the year everyone , including the teacher had a pillowcase (I can’t remember if our parents sent them in or the teacher provided them) and we did paint handprints on everyones and signed our names. I love how even now at 22 I can look at it and still remember all the kids from first grade. It’s held up really well and I think every first grade class at my school did, and still does this project.

Since you have a leaf theam going on, what about putting up a tree on one of your walls you can add leaves and depending on the size you make them you can write the year and have 3-4 kiddos do their thumbprint on each one. Then move the last year leaves to the top of the tree and work your way down. Also, if you can't find your wood paper for your artwork wall what ablout using your wood puzzle mat on the wall?.

Clear book tape sticks to cinder block. Just cut it thin so it doesn't show on your greenery. You will have to use a bit longer strips. Won't be able to roll it. Might be worth a try! I bet your librarian would have some. 😊😊

For the problem your having with the hooks falling down from the back wall you may want to try cleaning the wall off in that area because of dust making it hard to stick. I think I remember hearing something about doing that since I've been in college. One of the dorms I stayed in had the problem of not wanting to hold command hooks and strips some of the time. It could also be affected by the type of weather you have, especially if it's humid. I hope this helps!

Our school does memory books. We’re the students write about their favorite thing they did that year. Also we did were they had to write about and event that happened, such as, a snow day, or a hurricane. It really fun, pulse it gets them writing more at the end of the year.
