FIRST DRIVE: Porsche 911 Dakar - Off-Road Supercar Driven
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Off-road supercars are for show not go, right? Not for us. Especially when the car in question is a jacked-up 911 that believes driving doesn’t have to end when the tarmac does. Welcome to the 911 Dakar: a high-riding armour-clad version of the 992 GTS. That means a 473bhp 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six at the back, four-wheel drive, and an eight-speed PDK gearbox... all raised 50mm higher off the ground than usual, while a lift system at both axles can extend the Dakar a further 30mm for “ambitious off-roading”. But is this recipe any good? We sent Top Gear Magazine’s Jack Rix out the office to put Porsche’s ‘tough’ new 911 Dakar through the wringer to find out. And because we’re thorough, we told him not to come back until he’d done it on sand AND snow.

Every time I see this car, I can't help but think how great it would be for my commute, about 15 minutes on dirt roads and 15 minutes on pavement. Often muddy or snowy. But then again, If I could afford this car, I probably wouldn't need to commute.

I work at a Porsche dealership in Canada a customer traded in his 22 911 turbo S for a Dakar the reason he traded up was because he couldn’t drive his car in the rough winter conditions. So I know for sure at least one of these cars are being used proper
Dressed with Rothmans colors. Classic beauty!
If i was able to buy this car and do a world tour with it, i would. 100%. What an experience that would be. Amazing car and as always, amazing content.

i mean tbh cars that appeal to enthusiasts usually dont sell too well, im sure if porsche made much more of these they would still sell like crazy but at the end of the day its still a supercar that isnt gonna make as much money as porsche's cheaper options/

@@markgeorge2200 of course it is more profitable, do you think a 911 costs much more to produce than a cayman, but it's a lot more expensive, 911 tax. This is a more expensive GTS, the GTS is already a profitable car, Charging 18k for a paint job, again, nearly all profit.

I guess they wouldn't sell much more anyway. It's a very cool, but very niche car costing ~250000 Euros. There aren't many people able to buy such a car as a weekend toy or collection piece, Porsche wouldn't be able to sell 10000 cars. Being limited makes the car more interesting for potential buyers and it's probably much easier for Porsche to plan with a limited production run. 2500 cars sounds like it's enough to satify most of the people really(!) interested in buying the car while also being low enough to keep it desirable and sell all the cars.
Jack is a mighty fine presenter. Slight mouth fumble with "1996... 996 GT3 on track" and shots of the 2004 GT3. It happens to us all Top Gear

Imo, Porsche is the only supercar maker who doesn't come off as ridiculous if they build something like this. They have the heritage and know how to pay hommage to it. Also, they're known to build the most reliable supercars so I really buy that it can be (ab)used (the vast majority of them won't, sadly) like intended. Watched almost the whole video with a grin on my face and the bouncing off the rev limiter in the snow at the end was just heavenly! Hats off to Porsche for giving us these masterpieces!
I hope Porsche takes these limited run 911 Dakar and see there is a market for a mass production of this model. Update: a lot of people are upset that Porsche is only making 2500 of these. But again it’s actually a smart move. The 911 Safari builds have been controversial amongst 911 enthusiasts. So this is a great way of Porsche testing the waters with them and the car communities as a whole. And as a whole from what I have seen has been extremely positive. So I think Porsche will make this off road style 911 a official package run. Also this is my ideal super car. Simply because where I live in Canada, I can go nuts on side roads and farmers roads. And play all year round.

It's just a little frustrating how little faith they have in this. It's a 2 door mini suv. Boom. Sold. Anything with suv sell. But seriously, we just don't like practical cars. We like dumb stuff. Suvs aren't practical.... A Ford bronco isn't practical. This gives the 911 a just almost comical suv like look, that just will sell. I hope they don't give up.

I love that old livery! Reminds me of my grandad, he always had a pack of Rothmans in his top pocket. He's dead now.
This was an amazing video! Brilliantly presented, filmed and edited! Almost like a mini-episode of the TV show itself. Great balance of information, entertainment and a bit of humour thrown in. I'm so glad we have this on KZread for free.
Now let's hope these will actually see proper use and not just the inside of garages.
Wow wow wow, as a drive you want a lot of fun with your car. Porsche made a car where you can have fun on so many terrains, how insane!
This brings back memories. I love the 959 Dakar.
6:50 this is why I desperately love this. You literally can't take nice cars places. You have to plan. This is the most fun you ever can have with a 911, because it's unrestricted. Don't baby it, abuse it.
This kinda brings the old 959 rally car into my head.
Gotta love a Tough Porsche! Looks perfect to me___ finally one l'd take anywhere!
I wish they'd make more of these! the only way I'd ever be able to get one some day
We got a 997 gen2. targa4 2009 and it is the most fun car in winter. I live in Finland. With one click of handbrake it becomes rear wheel drive only. Awesome.
Says a lot when a Dakar Porsche is the perfect daily driver.
Great video, fantastic car! The presentation was fun and enthusiastic, well done! Would love to have a 911 Dakar, but with more daily useable seats and minus the roll cage. Oh and with enough money in the bank to not care about using the thing. 😂
About the same power as a 959, too. Awesome
I love it. The first 911 I can drive on the potholed streets of Edinburgh.
This would be a great all year DD for here in Tahoe, you want something sporty and fun to drive that won't get obliterated by snow, potholes and other mountain town challenges. The obvious problem is that it's about $140k too expensive to be a reasonable DD. :D
There are a bunch of great Dakar launch videos out right now… THIS IS THE ONLY ONE WITH EPIC SNOWY ROAD SLIPPY FUN!

If I ever see one of these driving around I’ll be shocked. Even just a video of a privately owned one. One of these putting miles on its odometer will be about as common a sight as a dodo bird.
As an American, I was like "What kind of adverts???" But then I remembered that y'all folks from England call cigarettes..... (actually my lawyer wouldn't let me finish this sentence)
I'm 101% sure Nobody will take this offroad and the most offroad thing that this will do is climbing a 2 inch speedbump.

You have one allocation slot for either the Dakar or the touring which one you’ll pick ?
Wonder if they'll do anything similar for the 718 chassis.

what an awesome car!
They really out did themselves with this.
It will probably be like the the 911R. They release a special edition to test the market and create hype and then they will release it as a regular model like the GT3 Touring. I don't think they did all that development just for 2500 units
JP performance, have make a great video for this car. I like it much.
Pirelli scorpion all terrain plus tires fulfil the legal requirement of winter tires because they are snow rated and actually they do good in winter in my experience
Finally a usable supercar... Just a pity that by limiting the numbers, many of these wont be used at all. Hopefully Porsche will see sense and make this a standard line up model.
Looks like the most fun since the Audi Quattro. ✅
I've never in my life wanted a 911 so badly...
Love the Rothmans livery
I hope the 2500 production run is just a market test; they should make the Dakar a permanent member of the 911 lineup, maybe priced in between the GTS and Turbo. They would sell well.
Good video.

People were racing the old cars in the Dakar classic this year and Porsche didn't bother entering a new one of these, which is pretty sad
This would be far more impressive and compelling if it was actually a homologation special and they were planning on rallying the 911. As it is, it's cool but ultimately I'm guessing no one will actually thrash it off road, or even commute in it. The 959 was a homologation car, and that was part of what made it so special.
If Top Gear telly was like this I might watch it 🤓
So to perfect your Porsche for everyday use, you should lift it? Can't see to many owners taking this route. Hope some do though.
What a wonderful car. Hopefully for the next generation of 911, a Dakar will be available without a limited run. I always love Jack's reviews, he is fantastic at being energetic and informative. You can see he shares the passion that brings us all here.

It's about time Porsche did this. Brilliant move and I think this will sell like hotcakes. As an off-roader a Porsche isn't on my radar, but that no longer applies.

You could easily drive up that road in any RWD car too, I'm sure. I've driven like that in two Nissan Laurels from the 80s (C32) with no issues (it's quite well balanced weight wise though), no special LSD or anything. That's the nice part about snow drifting. It's so chill and relaxing, if you want it to be.
Finally! A 911 for Birmingham roads
The Martini livery made me feel some things 🤤🥵
i think this car could have really benefited from having the suspension 30mm higher , its still a little low for the kind of places it would be cool to take it. and 100 more hp its a little low on power , for today standards.
