FIRST DRIVE: Noble M500 - 500bhp, £150k & Manual Gearbox | Top Gear

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

That’s right. Noble is back again with a simple supercar recipe, designed to make you reconsider if you really need thousands of horsepower, hybrid boost, many driving modes and a paddleshift gearbox. The new M500 has a steel chassis, a Ford engine, fibreglass panels and the gearbox for an old Audi (though it’s quite a special one). And with a target price of £150,000, this Brit upstart could be the answer to your entry-level analogue supercar prayers.
Top Gear magazine’s Ollie Kew’s taken the M500 prototype for a spin to see what’s what.

I think the biggest risk this car faces is actually called the Lotus Emira... A bit heavier (I can't believe I'm saying this), a bit less powerful yes, but also 75k less expensive (that's literally half the price...). And for that you still get a V6, a manual gearbox, a frankly stunning looking design, good dynamics, and a more prestigious badge. Oh and it's also now got a great interior, and it's bang up to date on all kinds of technology, so you don't have to sacrifice the good bits of technology just to have access of the good one of analogical cars. Only if Noble absolutely nail the handling and make it one of the best driver cars of all time (better than a Cayman?) would it become worth it in comparison. Or just get a manual F430, I don't know.

I’m not sure about the lack of ABS. No driver can even approach the stopping power of modern ABS and it could make the difference between a scare and a serious accident, which may involve other people besides yourself. A good ABS setup retains all the brake feel and only intervenes when you bury the pedal and *really* want to come to a halt - what’s the problem? Also, since ABS has been mandatory since 2004 in the UK, most people have become used to having it (or have always had it) and all that experience/primacy is hard to override in a very high workload situation. Maybe they should have put a couple of carbs in there instead of fuel injection and shod it with crossplies for that genuine sideways experience?

My favourite supercar today is the Porsche 992 GT3 due to its epic high revving naturally aspirated flat 6 and has the option of a manual but I would put the Noble a close 2nd above any Ferrari, McLaren or Lambo which are all paddleshift only.

I’m not too sure…the M600 was objectively ‘cool’ in the car world. But for what your getting…I personally don’t see any worth. As a drivers car for engagement for nearly £100,000 cheaper I’ll just take a Lotus Emira. I do think the design is cool yet odd at the same time. However, I can sort of see the value for money, yet I’m not too sure. Personally a 911 992 GT3 would provide all the engagement I need in a far more refined and polished package. I am however so glad to have the Noble brand back.

@@aiexielplays8028 Everyone has a GT3 because as a package it’s one of the best cars you can buy. There’s a reason why every single automotive reviewer including Clarkson sings praise on the 911 GT3. It’s such an enjoyable experience overall and inspires so much confidence whilst driving. The 992 GT3’s manual transmission is a gem as well, it’s liveable yet mechanically engaging. The problem I find with Noble is that no one is going to say ‘yes I’m going to spend anywhere between £200,000 to £300,000 on a car with no traction control, no ABS, No stability control, that was introduced back in 2009 with no creature comforts’. Anyone who has bought one will keep in locked away in a garage amongst a collection of other supercars. For me, and for most enthusiasts I want to use my supercar a lot more than once a month on perfect conditions and thats why I would prefer the GT3 or nearly any other supercar, I can still use it whilst I can guarantee you can’t with the Noble. Even the Emira is a better proposition as a drivers car, it’s focused on what it is. For the money I think Noble are just charging WAY too much, yes their cars are special but for £150,000 for the M500’s 500bhp Ford ecoboost engine manual transmission sports car, your having a laugh! and the M600 is over a decade old and still being sold today for £300,000, I’m sorry it’s not worth it, they have to do a lot better than recycled materials for that price. If the M500 was let’s say £90,000 and the M600 generously was £140,000 it would be a better buying proposition…but I’d still take the 911.

What we really need is some small, nimble sport cars (not a super car) for the price of a regular hatchback. Why does the Alpine A110 have to be so much more expensive than a Clio or a Megane? Do we really have to cross the 100K barrier to get a car with more than 300hp, less than 1200kg and a manual gearbox?
