I need to run in my 911 GT3 RS. So I decided to take it on a road trip with my Audi R8 to see which is best. After four months of ownership the Porsche has done less than 600 miles. Can I get it run in and experience the full 9,000 rpm? What's more one of these cars has to go... But which is it?

    I'd 💯 get an oil change done after the bedding in period. In most oil samples that are analysed will contain a high value of iron particles from the piston rings bedding in. You do not want that swirling around until its actual first service

    it'd be great if Matt could actually send the oil for testing so that we know if this is still necessary. This was true in older cars but newer cars have much better tolerances so who know. I change my my oil at 1000-2000km Mark depending on the car, just in case. Compared to the overall cost of the car it's a tiny expense.

    I agree with you doing a complete gradual run-in procedure all the way to 9500 RPM. That's what I've always done with my cars. Long term ownership usually benefitted from less oil usage and (possibly) slightly better MPG - not that you're likely to be concerned about that. Apart from "just because you can" there's little need to max the car out for overtakes etc. Those last couple of hundred miles will literally 'fly by'. Then get an oil change and you can really start to enjoy the full dynamics of the car.

  • @VK6AB-
    @VK6AB-2 ай бұрын

    Honestly just enjoy the car, the run in is fairly conservative as it is and there for all components not just the engine. The key is getting the rings well bedded and that can be achieved by running down hill with foot off the gas pedal. If you start doing regular track days don't forget to increase oil changes to every 5,000km or so. They're very robust, what hurts them more than anything is not being used and run up to temperature. From a maintenance longevity perspective the garage queens tend to come with a lot more problems.

    A lot of new motorbikes will limit the revs until you have completed the miles. some allows it to rise with the odometer gradually. After a certain milage, they need a service, and after the motorbike have had that service, you can rev it freely. I guess it's very different in motorbikes though, since they have extremely small engines compared to cars and most likely revs way past 10.000 rpm, so there a lot of small fast moving parts.

    Speaking to engine builders and oil manufacturers .... This procedure is entirely unnecessary. Anything metal that needs to "wear in" will have done so within the first start up. The 1st heat cycle will expand anything needing expansion, and the engine running will impregnate any plastic items with oil. Theres nothing else to "bed in" if its built correctly, and im certain it is. Just rag it.

    Pretty much all engines what you should do in run in is: 1 don't put pedal to the floor, max half throttle or so. 2 for the first thousand miles don't go past half the max rpms of the car. 3 don't go to highway at constant rpms, make the engine happily go through the revs (respecting the previous limit i said). After that, change the oil and filters and it's good to go full performance!!!
