Firework Star Rolling Demonstration and Technique
This is a demonstration of how the stars commonly found in ball shells are made. This demonstration was preformed at a Michigan Pyrotechnics Arts Guild shoot using an inert composition. A big thank you to our unnamed instructor in this video. Very well done!

I literally had never thought I'd end up on *your* channel when looking up a good method for making firework stars 😉 this is like old school NightHawkInLight :P
@pyrocrazy321 It was a composition that contained a binder, 3% starpol. The rest of the comp was just a non flammable mixture made for the demonstration.
@MrRyanesmyth No, the lead shot would be tiny and covered with a huge layer of composition. There's no extra danger from getting hit with the stars when using lead shot.
@vroomba03 Just plain water is in the bottle. The pellets are made out of a cheap birdseed called millet. It's the yellow seed that is in a lot of feeder mixes.
Don't worry about the ads. I've been a longtime fan of your stupid simple fireworks tutorials, infact, i came by today just to grab the link, and send it to a mate of mine. Just wish you made more stuff, as it's very easy to just ship of a link rather then have to try and explain something myself. Thank you for your time and effort.
@zwartje66100 I believe the bowl is the bottom of a plastic barrel that has been cut in half. I don't know enough to recommend a specific rpm, it varies too much depending on the size of star and composition. A variable speed motor would be the way to go. I do not know the next time I will be able to get a video of this demonstrator, but I do plan on a video showing how to roll stars by hand eventually.

I'd love to see more of this dude and this technique!
how do you get this amazing break in your shells? how much pasting or which booster do you use and how much?
@panzuman Rolled stars are much better for ball shells. Cut are better for canister shells.
@Nighthawkinlight i agree with you it doesn't need to be any longer . All was needed to know was how to get the millet seed started to get the comp rolling onto it . The only other thing to star rolling is creativeness with the colour layers and knowing what layers to prime. And it was a good video i learnt a few things. Thanks for uploading.
GREAT STUFF MAN. I WANNA BUILD ONE OF THOSE TUMBLERS!!
good sound man awesome to hear those bursts in HD
@aceattack52 It was just flour. This video was just a demonstration, it did not use real pyrotechnic compositions.
I would like to see a video or video series of you making a 3" (or larger) shell from all the basic materials to firing it.
i use mustard seed (very small) and only about $2.50 for a bag of at least 20,000 seeds. i like the small size cause it gives me more comp on the star, but if you are just starting out use something larger like peppercorns or bird seed and be prepared to waste comp ( its a learning curve) also use a VERY FINE MIST BOTTLE! if the stars get to wet the fall apart into a sticky ball. and as the stars get bigger i go from a few sprays per comp add to 7-9. its all about feel. keep these vids up nighthawk i love that sh*t! :)
to start the shape of the stars you use a product, what would it be?
Very good video. Would you care to share where you got the star rolling machine? If you made it, how about a video on how to do that? Thanks for sharing your knowlege and artistry.
excellent job sir how i can make this setup at home
The plastic bowl he's using where can i get that?? What speed do you recommend? (rpm) And can you get more of those technique vid's??
@Nighthawkinlight looking forward for the rolling stars by hand
I plan to use a 10-15 gallon plastic livestock feeder (very durable) and a motor I took from a 10" craftsman bandsaw and I'll add a speed control so I can adjust the speed to my liking. I've never posted a video but I'll consider uploading one only if it turns out to be safe and effective to share with others.

what are the mini yellow ball in the star roller??
Whats in the spray bottle? And what are the initial pellets made out of?
What was the white powder he put on the little pellets at first? He used a spoon to put it on.
good video..YOU SAID FIRST ADD BIRDSEED...CAN YOU USE HEMPSEEDS TO START OFF WITH?
one thing ive used to make stars is prilled kno3 as starters. if this helps anyone aka stump remover that stuff most always comes prilled.
is obtained as potassium nitrate and sulfur or in which paarte
What is the spray and what is the powder
@Nighthawkinlight IMO it's only thing of star mixture. It it's hard to ignite (sometimes primed with thick layer of black powder don't ignite) then cut stars are better. Sharp edges need less heat to ignite properly. It's important especially when star compound is made with lots of metal powder like Al or Mg. ;)
Well done.
Can anyone tell me where to buy a star roller like the one above? Or maybe a video on how to make one! Great new website BTW.
He's going to be at the Clare shoot again this year - but I'm not sure if he's going to be doing any demos while he's there. I know he's shooting some stuff - but he's the Safety Officer now for MPAG.
I love that T-Shirt!!!
i use poppy seeds as the core and they work great
Can you show me the heat wrap recipe?
what on earth did i just watch ?
The teacher guy sounds like the one guy from toy story that steals woody from the kid.
i dont know jack about fireworks, but this video is very interesting!
were these made in 1 day?
I tried to hand roll stars with a large bowl once, it is not easy and takes alot of patience. I haven't been building in a long time, but I still can't roll stars.
Nice
Sir how to make silver dragon sky shot???
@Nighthawkinlight oh okay thanks!
Guys, please give me the recipe for star seeds
@bamboo4tameshigiri No hes using a mixture of 75 water / 25 alc
rollin rollin rollllin keep them babies rollin! It's June!!!! get busy!!! =)))
That demo in the beginning sound like a kick drum and a snare.
what kind of balls does he starts with?

I'm not the man in the video but I believe that specific roller isn't made any more. There are plenty of designs out there though. Check out passfire(dot)com and amateurpyro(dot)com and you'll find plenty of information.

It's the bottom of a 55 gallon drum with a wing nut holding it to the shaft of a motor even a motor from a dollar store fan will work
cool.
Yeah, so thumb up and spread the word.
your forearms are huge!
i wana see them finshed
I really like this video, the man explaining the process is right on, and easy to see he knows what he's doing. Any ideas on where I could find a tub like the green one on this machine?
I agree, too short. It's more of a teaser, but not really an actual video
A little wet, but it was a great shoot well worth seeing.
What is the white powder

Install adblock... no more Ads on the videos
Poppcorn :-)
hey, all you have to do is download adblocker and no more youtube ads ever again!!!!!
The thingy goes round and round round and round.
The t-shirt rulez!
If you have google chrome you can go to the chrome store and get ad blocker, dont worry its free. Blocks all adds on youtube :D
I had no fucking idea what was that video about
True, but the jump from minuscule pellets to practically finished stars was rather suprising. Still interesting, but not up to the bar you've set with your other in depth videos.
Thats a Hobby Fireworks start roller. Dont think they are made anymore, but a roller is not hard to make.
Spf
ok
Ahh man, put those pheasants in there....
His tee shirt was more interesting than the video
Dat shirt
Why did I have a raspberry?
DO NOT USE A METAL BOWL in the sunlight like you you see in this video, to hold your comp while rolling stars. The shiny curved suface can and does focus the sun's rays to a point hot enough to ignite the material, espcially darker colored compositions (like prime).

Bro that is not metal.
Getting tired of these advertisements ruining firework videos
bird seed, genius
Psst come here a second...Don't use adblock okay? "They" don't like it when they don't make money.
What...are you like 12 years old ?
He needs to make up some money for it somehow, making these videos costs money alot more than youtube pay.....unless you would be willing to donate?
Has no idea what he is doing.
