While your statement would be true for something like Battle of Brittain, Top Gun or the original Star Wars, it's just ridiculous here. The flight scene at the end was absolute pants, with obvious sped up footage and terrible use of miniatures. Eastwood may be an awesome dude who acts great, but that can't save this movies awful pacing and camera work.

Yes, but we could make more Mig-31s, too. Just having the plans doesn't get you the plane, necessarily. There is the technical knowledge, the metallurgy, radar invisibility tech, all of which the Soviets had already figured-out and (hopefully) we could reverse engineer with the actual plane. Stealing the plans would not have been enough. :P

The aerospace scientists that build the Firefox, especially the creators that had the skills and know-how to build the advance weapon systems and stealth technologies were killed by the Soviets. So even if their were technical notes (if any were left/recovered), the scientists replacements would be starting from scratch. Also what made it worse, was the Soviets in the movie let their one only remaining prototype go after the stolen Firefox, and it was destroyed.

Love this movie ever since I first watched it in the 80's, only one criticism is the terrible soundtrack it was not appropriate for this movie, it sounds like it belongs in some super hero movie from the 70s.
