Fire On the Bombi (4K)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

With more than 22,000 acres to cover, it'll be a while before we've been everywhere on our trapline. Especially with the cutlines being so overgrown.
Fortunately, we have a machine made for the task.
Gotta watch the accumulation of branches near the exhaust though, as we found. Have to avoid carrying our jerry can of gas near there.

Don Silver here. Good catch by Tristian. He doesn’t get too excited does he :) Just sharing some snowcat experience with you as I’ve had three separate fires too. When you’re running in temps warmer than -10C watch the engine temps. Normal temp should be about 80C but when you’re working, it may climb. If it reaches 95C stop, but do not shut off the machine. Wait for the cooling system to bring it back to 80C. If the temp doesn’t drop, shut it off as your coolant may be low or the fan belt broken. Carry extra coolant and one spare belt. Every day and when stopped, remove brush and twigs that have accumulated around the engine cowl, exhaust pipe and muffler shroud. Hot engine temps will ignite them. My snowcats have removable skid plates under the engine. The Bombi engine compartment is sealed. Old engines leak oil. Oil and brush accumulate there and if ignited, a fire can be very difficult to put out. I clean my skid plates twice a year. You could add a rubber grommet style drain plug and try to pressure wash your engine compartment once or twice a year. Your Bombi engine cowl is difficult to remove. You almost have to stand over it to lift it off. You should fix that in case of a fire. Don’t know if your gas engine Bombi is like my diesel snowcats, but when I idle for long periods of time in cold weather soot accumulates in the exhaust system. When you work the engine again and it warms up, soot gets ejected as sparks out the exhaust pipe and can fall into the muffler shroud or engine cowling and start a fire if brush has accumulated. You should carry a 5-10lb fire extinguisher as it can put out an engine compartment fire better than water. For the type of fire Tristian put out, handfuls of snow work as well or better than water. Nice to see you using the machine. Keep your eyes peeled for deadfalls on the ground buried by snow. You can see them. Don’t travel over them sideways or fast as they can take out track grousers, suspension components and tires.

Thanks Don! Those are important points I (and Tristan) will keep in mind when operating this machine. Definitely have a fire extinguisher on my 'buy' list before next trip.
