I started a hair health/growth journey in the summer of 2016 and have been finger detangling *exclusively* since 2017. My hair is healthy, dense, and at least hip length. I only use a comb or brush on the rare occasion that I silk press my hair, which is every one to three years. If I’m going to straighten my hair, after shampooing, conditioning, and thoroughly finger detangling, I will apply heat protectant and comb out my hair in sections before blow drying it, which I can do easily without having to pull, tug, or snatch the comb through my hair. Of course, I comb my straightened hair every day. I will wear my hair straight for about 14 to 25 days before washing it again. Aside from that, no comb, brush, or detangling tool ever touches my hair. I think most people don’t know how to finger detangle or lack the patience to do it properly. Part of the finger-detangling technique is preventing tangles from occurring in the first place. I normally keep my hair in plaits. I wash my hair every one to two weeks and *always* wash and detangle in sections. I never wear wash-n-goes because the tangling is prohibitive. The main drawback to exclusive finger detangling is that it limits your styling options. If I wanted to create a plethora of styles or even wear my hair in a bun I would need to use a comb and probably a brush. However, as someone who before my hair journey was only able to reach armpit length at best, I credit finger detangling, at least in part, for exponentially facilitating my length retention. My hair grew past my tailbone in less than four years. 😊

And when you DO use a comb, I’m sure there’s A LOT of hair in the comb, your hands, sink , floor, etc. A HUUUUGE ball of of hair. *Don’t forget to tell that part! 🤷🏽‍♀️ I think some people who swear by finger detangling don’t realize that. Also, just because your hair is long doesn’t mean it’s as thick as it should be. 🤷🏽‍♀️ As mentioned in the video, it depends on where the breakage is occurring, meaning where the follicle is located on your head. Thanks for your comment!

@@mrs.mississippi5035: I’m sorry, but you are sorely mistaken: 1) Whenever I comb out and blow dry my hair (after thoroughly finger detangling), there is virtually *NO* hair in my comb, in or on my hands, on my countertops, in the sink, *or* on the floor. In fact, I am shocked at how little hair comes out. That’s because 99.9% of my shed hair is removed during the finger detangling process. 2) I have nothing to gain by lying to you or omitting information. 3) Hair *can* be gently and *thoroughly* finger detangled. All the way too the roots. It takes *forever,* admittedly, but it *is* possible; I do it all the time. 4) My hair is *very* thick, full, and dense, including my edges. It’s actually denser than it was when I was using detangling tools because I experience far less breakage. 5) If you saw or felt my hair you’d take back everything you just said. 😂 6) You’re welcome. 🥰

@@mrs.mississippi5035 She is right, I used to be team comb but finger detangling has my hair thick and when I actually do use a comb, I don’t have balls of hair. Like she said, part of finger detangling is not letting your hair tangle in the first place. Most people either don’t have the patience to properly finger detangle and/or they don’t have a proper technique. Plenty of people finger detangle successfully and their hair is proof.

@@mrs.mississippi5035 finger detangling is mainly getting shed hair out, if your focus isn’t on the shed hair, then you’re doing the finger detangling wrong.. I went 9 months without a comb and went from balls of hair to a coin of shedding with monthly wash days..

It's true for me. My hair would be a mess if I wasn't properly detangling. I tried it once for a month( insane) and when I went in with a wide tooth I wanted to cry. It took me so long to properly detangle my hair.

Great video as usual. I as well use shea moisture products, but no issues with my edges . I’m thinking maybe the product may be too strong for some of us and that’s why we’re experiencing the shedding and breakage, idk. But now that you have mentioned it , I will start to take note how my hair is actually reacting and look into shopping around for new shampoos and conditioners . This definitely isn’t a one size fits all.

Yes, I can attest to the shea moisture causing issues, the amount of hair came out was drastically different than my usual wash days, fortunately I only used the deep conditioner and yes it happened on more than one occasion because one, I was in disbelief and two, there was full container remaining 😢. I agree with your thought: it maybe too strong for some...

For those with fine density hair I think finger dentagling works fine. You have to do it often though maybe atleast once a week so that your hair doesn’t have time to tangle and keep it hydrated. Whatever my fingers can’t get out at the end I cut it out. And you need smaller sections, warm water, botanical gel or conditioner. I always finger detangle but sometimes I do follow with a medium tooth comb.

I have fine 3c dense hair... 21 inches long. I think every head of hair is different, finger detangling makes my hair smooth as silk without the breakage. I love all your tips, sis. (Not all heads are equal, but they have potential to be beautiful).❤

Finger detangle is bs for my hair at least 😂. Like I need a wide tooth comb and some conditioner for my hair. What my fingers gonna do exactly 😂 for maybe small tangles here and there ok I get that but for a whole head a hair to finger detangle?! Not for me

I noticed I do a little finger detangling when I'm putting on my deep conditioner, but I don't rely on just finger detangling alone. I'm about to wash my hair and I was thinking about flat ironing it for my niece's graduation this coming Sunday... I was looking to ask you for advice on what to put on the hair before I do this process, grease, oil? I use to have some pressing oil by Dax and I threw it away because I had it 10 plus years. I thought it was too old but maybe not, idk🤷🏿‍♀️😊

Hi! I washed my hair after right after work, and weekends. Some nights I only got about 3 to 4 hours of sleep. I caught up on my sleep the non-work days. Sometimes I started at night and finished early the next morning. I even went to work with deep condition and a shower cap under my head wrap or satin lined cap. There may be other reasons you are not retaining length.
