Finding the Line - How to Kayak

Фильм және анимация

The crew assembles again at the boilin hole on the Mayo River, NC. Kyle, Mike, Guy, Evan, P5 and I take on the different lines available at this awesome little park and play. We even had Tracy and Nicholas along for moral support! I suspect Tracy will begin this journey as well very soon. We continue with Whitewater Kayaking 101. We practice seal-launches, work through some difficulties in picking approaches, lines, switching to Plan B and dealing with flushy seams as well as focus on the importance on not giving up on the roll. The guys are all trying to transition from paddling to avoid a flip to paddling through a rapid intentionally and effectively. That will all come together with securing a confident roll sometime in the near future. For now, we are just showing these learning experiences on video as we hope it will help others going through the same struggles. Hats off to the guys for being big enough to allow their learning moments and mistakes to be highlighted for the world to see. Come along and hopefully we can all learn something! Oh, and ... I almost swam!

    am i correct that your wearing a throw rope on your chest? first time i have seen that. would you typically use that in white water or is it more of a training situation thing? seems like a good idea I'm wondering why its not normally done. Is there a risk of accidental deployment?

  • @RiverKingsKayak

    @RiverKingsKayak

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Chris! In any real whitewater, I am always wearing an Astral rescue vest, I always keep a 70' throw rope on my chest. There is a perfect chest pocket in the center of the vest. The rope diameter is smaller but this bag is always available. There is no chance for accidental deployment. It is retained with a quick disconnect type clip with the open side of the throw bag stuffed down in the pocket. I carry another thicker throw rope in my kayak clipped in between my legs. Also, there is a big throw rope and pin kit behind the seat. Many kayakers and rafters will carry flip lines, throw bags, webbing loops, 'biners and all kinds of goodies in their pfd's. For me, it has come in handy many times! None of this will be possible without the correct pfd. A true Rescue Vest is an amazing and critical piece of gear.

    When you leave the paddle in the water between strokes and affect your trajectory and boat attitude by manipulating the paddle without retaking strokes. Almost like a rudder of sorts...slip strokes, conversation strokes, sculling, etc...more advanced stuff...I have included explanations in various vids in the past, but need to do a a dedicated video on that.
