It's refreshing to see some photographer, whose aperture is not glued to 1.2 in every shot. Great content, thanks for sharing!

The one factor that is very important to me is how much the client likes the portrait. I have a 28-200mm Tamron lens that I do not like but for some reason, clients seem to like the portraits produced by this lens.

I dont know why, but Sony FE 35 1.8 is so underrated lens. It is so small and lightweight. And has same sharpness and detalisation as Sigma art 35mm 1,4. but much cheaper. The best lens for sony for its price. I also have Sony 35 1,4 GM but sometimes im still use FE 35 1.8

For weddings, I like to use 85mm f/1.4 and 105mm f/2.8 macro lenses.

Thank you for sharing Kyle. I switched from 50mm F1.4 to Tamron 35mm F1.4. I found that it's more versatile since you can crop the image easily while barrel distortion is negligable and can be corrected in post. While 50mm is better in distortion & separation most of the time, there are many situation that you can't step further back even outdoor.

I’m not a 35mm guy but used it on a shoot recently. I did not like the way it rendered the face. Like you suggested, it’s best for getting the whole scene. I used it wrong. I prefer the 50 or 85. Thanks for the content!

thanks for sharing kyle, very informative, I am glad because I made the right decision. i just sold my sigma 85mm 1.4 and bought a 50mm 1.4. with the only one reason... the weight. i am happy with the 50mm because i can use it indoor and outdoor and i think i will be able to learn more about composition with this lens.

I think these are essential lenses (50mm and 35mm) but some extreme looks require extreme focal lengths. I like 200 f/2 for corridor/ tunnel shots.

Thanks for the video Kyle! You forgot to mention the 40mm as a standard. It is often overlooked. I think it's a great compromise in between 35 and 50 having the benefits of both. Such an interesting focal length! They say it is the closest to the human eye field of view. For 2 years I had just 40mm and 50mm ff equivalents on Fuji and did everything with them, from portraits to landscapes. Now that I moved to Nikon ZF, got the Z 50mm f1.8 s and the Z 40mm f2 SE. I got also the very affordable 28mm f2.8 se in case I need a wider field of view. I did order also the Z 85mm f1.8 s, but having second thoughts now. I always wanted to experiment with a 85mm for portraits and for isolating subjects since my Fuji days, but having already the Z 50mm f1.8 s, I question how much I would really need and financially justify the Z 85mm f1.8, even though I know it's one of the best portrait lenses out there. I'm not a fan of its size I must say, especially on the ZF. So I'm pondering to just send it back and direct the funds towards the beautiful Voigtlander 40mm f1.2 nokton Z mount to dive into manual with the benefits of the electronic contacts and facial recognition. As for the 85mm, I could try a much cheaper alternative like the Yongnuo 85mm f1.8, which is lighter and smaller than the Nikon Z one, and with good performance overall, or get a cheap vintage manual 85mm. Your thoughts? Thanks!

I have 40mm lens, but they are not very popular. That's why I didn't mention it. For manual focusing lenses, I will recommend them to any mirrorless shooters. They are awesome.

You comment that telephoto lens has shallow DOF . Comment made at 2.47. DOF is a fixed function. . Can you expand and explain this comment. . . TY

For a given size of the subject's image in the focal plane, the same f-number on any focal length lens will give the same depth of field.

  • @KyleCongphoto

@charlieschmidt9668 but you will have a lot more distortion to get that level of dof with wide angle.

Your background will look different too. Wide angle lens won’t have that zoom in effect on the telephoto lenses. What I mean by that is small area of the background but enlarged.

TY for sharing. . not talking about the "look" . . your comment is a tele has shallow DOF. . . . . how can you back that up. . .it is a physics function. . . a text reference? a different formula to look at?

  • @charlieschmidt9668

I agree. . The Tele lens will look different( not like the normal or wide angle).. . But this is not a function of DOF. . The false statement you made is misleading. .

I have owned 3 85mm lenses before. I end up sold them all. I just don't use 85mm very much. 85mm lens might be more useful for me for studio work, but I have 24-70.
