How to blend strobe lights with ambient light using Beauty dish and strip box

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I'll deconstruct my lighting setup using one of my recent photo shoots as an example.
You'll see how I blend my strobe light with ambient by using just small light modifiers, either just one light or with multiple lights. I'll also explain how I pick my background.
The gear used:
Nikon D810, Sigma 50 art.
Profoto B2, Profoto OCF silvery beauty dish, Profoto OCF 1x3' strip box

Awesome breakdown of your process, thank you! If I may make one suggestion: on top of the end result photo and the BTS photo, one photo that would help understand your process is a photo of just the ambient light with the strobes turned off. Thanks again!

Great explanation! You really managed to advance the environmental light with strobes. Looks very natural. I wouldn't notice the additional light maybe if I just see the picture.

hey man you're talented. great explanations and great shots. we always hear about big modifiers and their benefits but there are some real benefits of a smaller modifier to create shadows and add value as you said.

That was my question. Kyle talks about respecting the ambient light (which is great), but how is he achieving the balance?

how do you balance the temperature for the light? do you adjust to the strobe or the ambient light?

  • @KyleCongphoto

I don't balance and I usually don't have issue with it because I balance with window light. Indoor tungsten will be different story, but I usually just turn them off. I'm not a huge fan of using gel.

Alexandre .. bts will be less clear on exactly how the lights were setup and why. The toning is from the lighting, of want to learn how, pay attention to my drawing.

@@KyleCongphoto I beg to differ... I can see the light sources better when you show the bts. From your drawing, a lot is left out. For instance, you said you used a beauty dish, but the actual bts photos show you used a "softbox-beauty dish". Also, you mention light sources in your drawings, but you do not show the quality of light in them. From bts, this can be seen... Sooo, bts is more accurate than your photos in little details you do not show. But, thank you for the response!

@@alexandre..9343thanks for the feedback. but trust me, you can't tell the difference between a beauty dish and collapsible beauty dish. The reason I didn't emphasize exactly what type of beauty dish i used is because, it doesn't matter. Actually exactly where I put my light is not that important either. I can measure the distance and angle but I don't think that information will help you. Each shoot will be different. I recommend you focusing on the general lighting theme and the look it creates. Don't go technical on photography. It'll blur your artistic eyes and creative mind.
