Find Center of Gravity Of Multiple Objects | Physics & Engineering

Learn a simple and methodical approach to finding center of gravity, center of mass and centroid of an object.
Taking into account the mass or area of an object, as well as its location it is possible to summate the masses times positions, (effectively torque) relative to a reference point (datum).
This problem comes up in introductory physics courses such as AP Physics 1, AP Physics C Mechanics and appears on A Level Physics as well as the JEE. This problem also appears in introductory physics courses such as PLTW POE

Thank you for pointing out the difference between the center of AREA and the center of MASS. And that the same equation can be used for both!

I still feel like the distinction between the two warrants more discussion, but I at least made sure not to simply dismiss the two as being the same.

Is it a rule for the triangle that the center of mass is one third? what if i have triangle for example with an attachment object at one of its side, is it gonna be one third as well? one more question please what about the cylinder shape? thanks

The CG of a uniform right triangle will always be 1/3 of the distance along either dimension of the triangle. If you start attaching other thing things to the triangle then the 1/3 rule will no longer apply. A uniform cylinder has a CG right in the middle of the cylinder.

why do you dislike summation notation? its more compact

Most people look at a 'sigma' and their heads fall off. Write the equation out a little differently and CG isn't that hard for them.
