I agree, it's very gratifying. J can sometimes, though not always, get so lost in the performance that he misses the message. It's nice that Amber usually picks up on what's being delivered in the song. That's what's so aggravating about Brad&Lex. Even though they have a slightly better approach to recording their videos (pausing appropriately, rewinding after EVERY pause), they often have a hard time following the gist of the song even when they're watching a lyric video.

This one used to be one of my jams in the 90s. Not many people I knew liked Blues Traveler but I just loved John Popper’s passion in the videos.
I don't think it's too much of an overstatement to say that "Hook" is the most important song in popular music history.
There's more back-story to this song. As others mentioned, it's a critique of pop music, but it's bitter. At the time they were recording this album, Blues Traveler had been under A&M Records, which was going to be bought by Universal, a huge conglomerate. Blues Traveler had been told that unless they could make popular music with a "hook", they would not be retained post-merger. They gave in and wrote pop music, but the lyrics were their protest. In the end the label dropped them anyway, and ended up on independant labels, which is probably for the best since it gives them the freedom to do the kinds of music that they always wanted to.

To watch people listen to this song and fall into his trap is always hilarious. Like .01% have a lightbulb go off and the other 99.9% are oblivious. Kudos to Amber.
This song has more meaning than just the lyrics. The chord progression of "Hook" is very similar to the basic structure of Pachelbel's Canon in D from the 1680s. This chord progression is very widely used in popular music, often as the hook. This structure has been used in hit songs by The Beatles, Pet Shop Boys, Oasis, Green Day, Maroon 5, and countless others.

These guys are so good very few catch that the lyrics are a troll about how folks don't listen to the actual meaning of them in pop songs and how the music industry doesn't care either. Just make it sound profound even if it isn't and the hook (lyrically and musically) keep folks listening.
They wouldn't show anything but glimpses of a genius because of his weight. Sadly we haven't evolved much
Used to go to a lot of concerts when I was 16-28 years old. Drove 4 hours to see Blues Traveler. No special lights. No lasers. No video screens. Just them on stage playing. They played in a converted vaudeville theatre near the Mississippi River in St Louis. I am a big fan of “Hard Rock / Metal / Punk Rock” - and out of 50+ different shows, that Blues Traveler show was HANDS DOWN the single best live show I have ever experienced. The song you did, was from their 4th album. Check out “But Anyway” from the first. Wonderful reaction!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉
The most brilliantly constructed critiques of modern pop songs ever constructed. It’s fantastic.
Guy on the piano was Paul Shaffer, former lead of David Letterman Show’s band. Paul is a legend of sorts, himself
This one's always a ppl pleaser. Straight banger. First, I've never heard anyone play the harmonica like that and my life. Then the why John can be so powerful one moment then soft and agile the next. The rhythm section with the great pocket. Just top notch.
John is the Jimi Hendrix of the harmonica. All other harmonica players were absolutely bewildered on how he was playing the things that he was. People did not know a harmonica could be played like that.
John Popper wears a vest FULL of harmonicas on stage. To me he sings like he plays his harps. Epic musician and band!
I love them, John's voice is spectacular, love their music.
This band is so underrated, massive talent.
Blues traveler were a band 90s musicians with 70's souls. Once when I saw the Allman Brothers in the Beacon Theater. John Popper came on stage and played harmonica with them for 3 songs. It was a great experience.
Ken Ober (RIP) being in this vid was so perfect. And the Citizen Kane nod. Chef's kiss perfection.
Never understood why this band wasn't bigger. No Passengers in this band, they're all killing it. ANY song off Blues Traveler 4 is worth a response. As a whole album, it was a classic of its day.
I love when phenomenally talented bands make tongue in cheek songs that are just a massive middle finger to the industry and critics. Such a good blues band.
Blue Traveler has always been one of my favs. John Popper has a great and unique voice.
Crash Test Dummies was a good 90's band. Superman Song, My Funeral, The Ghosts that Haunt me. all great
You might recognize the politician. He was the detective following The Dude in The Big Lebowski.
That song is better every time I hear it. The flow, the emotion, the range. And most importantly, the meaning. Everything hooky. Everything bubblegum. And it was no mistake that even the chord structure is the famously overused "cannon in D" progression. The best song ever written about hating pop music becomes one of the best pop songs. That's so wonderful.
His harmonica is golden! I have never heard anyone who plays quite like him and can just say, "forget the guitar solo - I got this!"
This song was definitely suggested by your Canadian viewers
My wife and I saw the BTs in the '90s in Columbus Ohio Much love for this band.
'Eclectic' is the word for 90s music, And did you notice at the end of the video the man watching television turned it off and opened a Book? Says a lot for that generation.
I always found how amazing his voice is. He sings like the harmonica as well.
The lead singer John Popper also did the music for Roseanne in the 90s if you can’t tell by his harmonica playing He was even a guest star on an episode of Roseanne His style is definitely unique I’ve never heard anyone play the harmonica the way he does💯🎶💙🔥
I am smiling big that you made it to Blues Traveler and that you liked them so much 💙! It's one of my favorite 90s bands as well. Try "The Mountains Win Again" and "Gina" for more great music from them. Also, I will keep saying it. Try the band Toad the Wet Sprocket. A 90s band I am sure you'll like. Start with *Walk on the Ocean."
Blues Traveler were a seriously under rated group.
So glad you made it here! I was just sitting back and waiting for the rap part, was not disappointed in your reaction. You must listen to more of them.
August 1993 I saw Blues Traveler open for Soundgarden, and then Pearl Jam and the Neil Young. One of the best concerts I have ever seen. Outdoors, summer, windy and rocking! When Neil Young performed Like a Hurricane with members from all the other bands. Boom! Eddie Vedder knelt before Neil while he played. It was an utter blast.
The 90’s is the BEST decade of music,,,, with exception to the 60’s. Blues Traveler- Carolina blues, run-around
In the 90's we didn't care as much for labels and genre, we loved it all, which is why the 90's musicians incorporated so many different styles and no two songs by a band or artist sounded the same.
The guy on key boards that helped with the song change up is Paul Shaffer a Canadian singer, composer, actor, author, comedian, and musician who served as David Letterman's musical director, band leader, and sidekick on the entire run of both Late Night with David Letterman (1982-1993).
Popper is a Genius. Love Blues Traveler
The bald guy you see on the keys is David Letterman's old band leader/musical director Paul Schaffer getting a cameo.
Harmonicas can only do one key at a time, so you have to have multiple harmonicas to change keys (which is why you don't usually here such a high pitch in songs). John Popper is such an iconic harmonica player that he wears a vest during concerts that hold all the many, many different harmonicas so he can switch keys within the same song. BRILLIANT!!
@calibadgerdude6082
Жыл бұрын
Mostly true. Most harmonicas are in fact tuned to specific keys and specific scales, but there are also chromatic harmonics that can play every note through multiple octaves. Popper uses both types, depending on the song. Some of their music uses structures that are outside of standard scales, so he’ll use chromatic harmonicas for those. The really fast crazy stuff is usually on standard harmonicas though, cause those are much easier to run around on because they literally can’t hit a note that’s out of key with the music. :)
I can whistle the entire harmonica solo. It’s my hidden talent. Don’t sleep on this album - it’s really good.
Love this band Saw them a few times in concert Danced all night
"And he's a harmonica player." Under statement of the year. LOL!!

The guy on the Couch is Ken Ober, who was the host of the Game Show "Remote Control" on Mtv, and the last guy was Paul Shaffer, who was the band leader for The Late Night with David Letterman, and he is also one heck of a musician in his own right.
One of the very best bands in the business. Every one of them a phenomenal musician. A whole lot of great music to explore.
It's February 1992, President's Day weekend, and I'm on a ski trip in Breckinridge, Colorado. One night I decided to check out the local nightlife and took a drive through town looking for a club with live music. I pass 'Joshua's' and the place is hopping with a band I never heard of, Blues Traveler. Most of what I remember that night was the lead singer John Popper and how he played harmonica so incredibly. Fast forward a few months and I hear they're heading the H.O.R.D.E festivals and appearing on Letterman. Unbelievable luck seeing them before they hit it big.
Blues Traveler rocks! John Popper is a genius. No one sounds or plays like him. Some of their other popular songs were Run-Around & But Anyway, also love Carolina Blues and The Mountain Wins Again.
Excellent term for this talented group. “Eclectic” indeed.
Blues Traveler is awesome. Great live band.
The 90s was a hodge podge of sounds. So many genres and styles filled this decade. There was really something for everybody during this time. Rap, Hip Hop, Rock, Metal, Easy Listening, New Age, Pop, Alternative, Grunge, etc. The mid-90s was well known for the Disney movie music and late-90s had a lot of pop/girl and boy bands. I don’t think you can really define this decade of music like you can the others that came before it.
“But Anyway” is a must listen for Blues Traveler.
These guys are my favorite band of all time. I’ve seen them at least a dozen times. I highly recommend The Mountain Wins Again
Rippin on the music industry, you got it right away. The voice is so pure. Thanks
