Audiophiles are going to hate me, but I think fully automatic should be an option on every turntable no matter the price. If you don't want it, you're a pure audiophile, fantastic. You don't need to have it. If you're like me and are willing to sacrifice a teeny tiny bit of sound quality because you happen to leave the room for a little while and don't want your needle spinning on deadwax for 39 minutes, or overnight because, well, fun happens! Let me have that option for $100, $200, hell even $1000 on a high ender!

The last automatic turntable, which I still have is my Technics Sl1600 MKII. I loved the convenience of not having to get up once the a record finishes playing. But I also love my manual turntables as well. It’s about time a manufacturer produce a product at a cost that will bring more people into the vinyl world.

I’d say this is perfect for someone who’s not going to fuss with it once they have it set up, and wants better quality than a low level Crosby or Ion. It’s great that you mentioned that it’s not very upgradeable for those who like to tinker - adding a separate preamp is about it, and that would probably help a lot. All it’s missing is the record stacker 😊.

Good video Randy. I've noticed that ALL the new generation of automatic turntables lack a "locking" tonearm rest. My belief is that for protection purposes it keeps the tonearm "free" in case it is accidentally turned on while in the locked position damaging the mechanism. If you remember back in the day, automatic turntables DID have the locking mechanism and how many times did it turn on while you were moving it and you'd hear this "clunk" underneath as the gears broke off like 15 teeth or so. Amazing for us, It usually still worked fine afterwards but owch! The Audio Technica AT-3 has an eyehole on the rest in which you can use a bread tie to secure it. I'm using the Denon DP300F and love it. It's in the same class as the A-1 but to me it's the best looking of all of them.

The included Ortofon OM10 is a pretty good cartridge in itself. For upgrading, Ortofon has several styli in the OM series that will easily pop right onto the OM cartridge body without any need for adjusting anything whatsoever. The included OM10 has a bonded elliptical stylus, which means the diamond tip is glued to the cantilever (that little grasshopper leg where the tip is located). The next step up, the OM20 stylus, has a nude elliptical diamond that is crimped into the cantilever rather than glued resulting in much lower tip mass which means much better - clearer - tracking in the high frequencies, cymbals, violins, and stuff. Another step up is the OM30 stylus, which upgrades to a fine-line nude mounted stylus for even better tracking of fine high frequency detail and lower record wear. There are also the OM40 stylus, with an even more exotic tip profile, and even specialty OM styli for 78 RPM records (I don’t think this Project turntable spins at 78) and another for old mono 45 RPM singles, though the OM10, 20, 30, & 40 will play 45’s just fine. These are all currently available from any Ortofon dealer, which are aplenty.

I'm running a Dual 1229 fully automatic (and fully mechanical!) turntable from the 70s with a Nagaoka MP110. It is finicky as hell, but I love it and it sounds great. It's kind of remarkable that fully automatic turntables aren't more ubiquitous, but I guess if you are into vinyl then the extra steps aren't as much of a thing now as they were back in the heyday of vinyl. Also, thumbs up to Metallica on green vinyl.

I bought the Denon DP300F for this very reason, automatic, and you can change out the head shell too, which is very nice. It has been out for more than a few years, and as far as I can tell does just fine on my system. I am using the Schiit Mani phono preamp, I like the sound of it vs my Pro-Ject preamp. The Mani is a bit more lively, where the Pro-Ject is more laid back. I am using MC cartridges. Currently running the old Denon DL-160 MC cartridge. I have tried several others, keep going back to the Denon DL-160.

Still loving my old Denon TT's, a near-top-end DP59L (manual with auto return, Shure V15 Type V cart), a "mid-level" DP35F full auto (AT VM540ML cart), and the entry model DP7F (Shure M104E). All have interchangeable cartridges (DP7F limited to the plug-in P-mount kind). Still, there's something about watching the auto features work, and all three have rumble, wow & flutter, S/N, and pitch stability numbers that crush today's turntables (not that anyone could hear the difference). I'm happy with my choices.

Thanks Randy! Off-topic question for you and other commenters regarding DACs... I'm considering upgrading my Modi-3 to either a Geshelli J2 or a Schiit Modi Multibit. I don't think you've reviewed the Modi Multibit, but others claim basically a lesser Bifrost in character(?). In terms of soundstaging what are your thoughts on the J2 vs. Schiit? I'm seeking the most "Holographic" sound while maintaining as much detail as possible. Cheers!

Same chassis as the automatic Thorenses? Does it mute when it cycles as the classic Duals did? I went vintage because I wanted quartz-locked direct drive in addition to the other items that I mentioned. A Sony Biotracer was just too expensive, so I settled with the Sony PS-X55. Loved it so much that I bought TWO! Peace.

Back in the day there were lots of full auto TT's that looked great, had great build quality, easy cartridge upgradability and cost around four hundred dollars. I guess pro-ject and others are testing the waters to see if the market for full auto is still profitable. For those of us who would prefer a higher quality table will have to stick with vintage for now.. In the meantime many TT manufacturers are bragging that their decks are "Fully Manual". What a joke. What I would like to see is a fully Automatic Fluance RT86A ( if that were at all possible ) for around 800 bucks.

I have to agree, the convenience of a fully auto TT would be great (once again) BUT only if it was built with quality in mind, and was around this same price range. And yep, the whole "Fully manual turntable!" is so stupid, like that's something to brag about! I just wish they'd create a quality TT where you could easily switch from manual/auto if you wanted.

I really like my AT-LP3 fully automatic turntable. It is cheaper, but it has a removeable headshell with adjustable counterweight and anti-skate. It comes with a decent AT91R cartridge that sounded pretty good, but I replaced it almost right away with a Ortofon 2M Red. It has a built-in pre-amp which I have never used (my Denon AVR has a phono input), and a second switch for Moving-Coil/Moving-Magnet which I also have never used. The cables are kind of low-end and permanently attached, but they work fine. It also has no superfluous nonsense like Bluetooth or USB. I got mine for $250 CAD and after two years, I am still very happy. You should check it out, if you want to try a better than its cost, fully-automatic turntable.

The Ortofon OM cartridge body has a wide range of replacements stylus that fit onto the body including some that cost more than the turntable you're reviewing. Denon has a fully automatic turntable close to the same price point and Thorens has a couple of fully automatic models in the $1K to $2K price point. I have the now discontinued Thorens 240-2 that features a floating chassis and replaced the aforementioned Denon with it. The Thorens sounded much better and the quality was much better. The lifter lowered slower and smoother, the anti-skate worked much better and I can crank it up without getting the feedback that I got with the Denon.

I made a wooden base with feet to set it on and level the rig. This new table in the review would benefit from the same solution. Also helps isolate vibration.

I stopped using turntables decades ago, but I have never had a manual turntable. They were all automatic. The manual ones that some friends had don't drop into a record. They are gradually and slowly lowered by the mechanisms until the stylus makes contact with the vinyl record. I do prefer the automatic ones I used to have. They make things just so much easier.

Good to know that here in 2022, Project finally has come up with a turntable that can finally catch up to the technology of the 1940's!!!! Good job guys! Really, why does SO MUCH of audio (other than speakers), seems like a retrograde action? No more balance controls, tone controls, loudness buttons.....really???? We don't need any of that anymore? Audio's golden age was the 1970's and 80's, and has been going down hill ever since.... Sorry for the rant, but I'm really sick of this kind of crap.

Agreed. Even the low-ish end belt-drive Technics (SL-220, etc) had a nice, well-made, semi-auto mechanism, and put this plasticky thing to shame. My mum, one of the least technically-minded people on the planet, had no problem manually starting a record on it. Mind you...she was a bit younger then...in 1978 😄 It's cool that Technics re-launched the 1200 series, albeit at a pretty stupid price, but it's a shame they haven't come out with any lower-end budget models. They'd wipe the floor with the likes of Pro-ject.

Within the higher end audiophile community automatic turntables are grouped right alongside CD changers and tone controls. I personally like tone controls (with the option of tone defeat), and a CD changer does have an extra thing in there to rattle (the tray) but whether it really is a no no is something I'm personally not really sure of. Maybe auto turntables are the same. Maybe manuals don't necessarily sound better and we are just led to believe something that they make too much of; like the in vogue thing about eliminating tone controls; which are actually very useful. End of side arm lift is mandatory if you use certain record clamps. On some records the tonearm at records end will get too near the label and the spinning record clamps will hit it and make both it and the cartridge skid backward across the record, Not a good thing. I can't stand listening to even a very flat non warped record without a record clamp. A good clamp very audibly improves the sound.

With it's fixed counterweight, it reminds me of my first low end Garrard turntable from the 70's. The cartridge, the cable and the auto features are probably the nicest things about it. It's not unusual for even high end turntables to have an attached RCA cable. Ortofon does offer a stylus upgrade that would keep the weight the same, but the upgrade costs $200 and seems way above league for this turntable. I was going to mention the Denon too but a bunch of folks got there first.

Scratching my head - the fully automatic Audio-Technica AT-LP3 has been around for 5 years, has a defeatable internal preamp, a universal headshell that will handle any ½” mount cart if you don’t care for the preinstalled AT91R cartridge, and a tonearm that lets you set the stylus pressure and anti-skating to suit whatever cartridge you choose. Stylus pressure on this Automat A1 is not adjustable and there’s no antiskating adjustment - both are permanently set. I have a vintage Technics p-mount turntable from the 1970s with the same tonearm features and I love it, but it is certainly nothing new. I should mention that the Audio-Technica AT-LP3 sells for half the price of the Pro-Ject A1. Sorry, not getting this “finally! Something new!” spin. And I don’t get why the A1 sells for twice as much as the AT-LP3. Clearly I’m missing something.

I have an LP 3. Got it new a few years back for maybe $200 or $250. Can't remember the exact price, but it was under $300. True- it's kinda plasticy, and not as nice looking stylewise as the more expensive turntables. But in addition to being automatic, it has an adjustable counterweight, and the cartridge is easily upgraded thanks to the swappable headshell mount. It's significantly cheaper than a comparable Denon 300 F, Fluance, or Pro-ject. Very underrated bargain. And if you shop around lately, more models are being offered in various brands, some in auto or semi, in different styles, with various features, but with similar tone arms- for around the same lower price as the LP3. Or you can look around for used decent vintage automatic turntables. So the options for finding budget friendly and quality auto turntables isn't as limited as you might think. I'm happy with the LP 3. I may upgrade the cartridge eventually, but to me, it already it sounds fantastic right out of the box. No regrets whatsoever in buying that cheap LP 3.

I learned long ago ( late '60's ) that a machine handles the very important lowering of stylus onto disc far better than my hand / eye. - Clunky AR Manual. under special circumstances most notably. Now using a mid 70's Pioneer that still works great, thou it's 90 % CD's. IF it died, I think I'd go for a new ( kinda old style ) Dual. or Thorens. The companies knew how to build very HQ T'tables 45 years ago...... just assume the auto features add price.

I recall there being quadraphonic Quad-8 track and Quad records also - good times. So why did LP stack changers go away? Seems like they should have evolved and be better than ever with 50 years of progress. Instead, we're talking about how unique it is for a turntable (like this one) to even have auto start/stop. It's like mfg's devolved back to the basics. What's next... a hand-crank, needle and megaphone?
