Hey Randy, I bought my RT82 (my first turntable) a couple of months back thanks to another one of your videos recommending it and I've been super happy with it; it's definitely great value for the money. Kudos for you and your channel.
I've had my RT83 for almost 4 years and have no reason to get a different turntable. And the fact that I was able to get it for a good price years ago, but still be able change out things like the platter and cartridge at a later date, is a huge pro-consumer thumbs up. I'm basically able to upgrade my 83 to an 85 by just changing a few small pieces that are designed to be easily switched out. I like having my tech having some level of modularity and repairability.
I took that last lump of cash I had accumulated before my retirement and invested it in my RT-84. Best lump of cash I have spent since.....this turntable is worth every penney! Every other turntable I considered was either more than twice the price for essentially less turntable, or just totally so unimaginable I couldn't see wasting my money on. I mean, for chrisakes, is it so hard to stick in a speed switch and an auto stop? They could take people's money and laugh all the way to the bank, but they didn't get to do it with mine! Great video as always, Randy!!!!
I gave a friend of mine the RT81 model last Christmas and he loves it 👍🏻
I've had the RT82 for 5 months, love it! I read reviews on the OM Red Cartridge vs OM10 and many said they sounded very similar so I didn't bother to spend more. OM10 can be upgraded by changing the stylus, the OM20 and OM30 stylus' are the upgrades.
I have a Fluance turn table because that's what you have due to your glowing reviews. Big thanks Randy!
I love my Fluance rt85 no regrets. Showed two friends they went out bought their own systems. Thank you for the recommendation
Does seem to be a great value and way to get started with options to upgrade the cartridges for the future as you get deeper into vinyl.
I bought an RT81 several months ago after considerable research and after about a 30 year hiatus with vinyl. I wanted something inexpensive but it had to look good AND I needed to be able to switch out the stylus so I could play 78s (to digitize), as well as a way to input into a computer. While it would have been nice to have automatic or even semi, Fluance fit the bill.
I generally agree with you. I love my Fluance RT-85T, with it's Ortofon 2M Blue cartridge.

I replaced the 2MBlue with Hana EL MC cartridge and WOW !!!!
I have had my RT-84 for a couple of years now. No problems, just a dust cover that resonates back to the cartridge. Take it off, works fine. BTW, I upgraded the Ortofon “Blue”. Cartridge
recently got a Technics SLD2 as my second turntable. 3 second cart removal 👍 Semiauto start, auto return (lifesaver)👍 easy 33/45 switch👍 $100! If you're talking value, used is Always the way to go in hifi
I bought the RT 85 last year. I figured I would just go all the way to the top of their line. I've been pretty happy with it and I do prefer the acrylic platter over the metal one. Some people don't like the Ortofon 2m Blue, but it sounds fine to me. I can always change or upgrade the cartridge so I feel like I can still make it sound better or change the sound down the road. For $500 bucks, I think it is a deal.

Thanks Randy for Always bringing us Outstanding Value! Mr. "Bang For Your Buck", that's You!!!
I like the aesthetic of the U-Turn tables. I have a blue one with accrylic platter and the 2m Blue cartridge. Just looks really cool.
Another great video. This one helped me decide what TT to get for my kid. Thanks for the assist!
Looking to get the rt-85…thanks for all the entertaining vids. Love the passion
I love my U-turn, but I build and fix electromechanical gadgets for a living. I didn't have an issue swapping the cartridge for the Nagaoka, but It wasn't quick and easy. I can see how it might be a problem if you don't have the same tools. I do like the color choices U-turn offers.
Happy Fluance customer here! I purchased a Fluance RT-82 and later upgraded with their Acrylic Platter which was available at a discount. Next on my list is a better cartridge/stylus.

I also purchased a RT-82 and upgraded the stylus. Consider swapping out the 10 stylus for a 30. They're $300 which is the cost of the entire RT-82, but the improvement is substantial. That's about as much cart as the Fluance can handle and I think you'd be incredibly happy with it. Having recently upgraded my TT to a Technics SL-100C I feel the upgrade from 10 to 30 stylus was at least as significant as the TT upgrade, if not more significant.
Love the gen xer sensabilities!
Stars Wars...The Millennium Falcon. looks like a worn-out junker, but beneath her hull she's full of surprises. Thanks for the tips today!
just ordered my RT-85N. It should be here within the week. Looking forward to getting it set up and enjoying some great albums from Jethro Tull, the Moody Blues, Tangerine Dream, and many more great older bands, as well as more modern albums from my favorite doom, sludge, and stoner rock bands.
The funny thing is neither Ortofon 2M Red nor 2M Blue with its higher compliance is really suitable for a tonearm this heavy. This inevitably results in... uhm... let's say, an altered sound signature. Which, surprisingly for an older audiphile, might be actually appreciated by the young beginners. Or they just don't mind the cartridge resonance calculator on VE and just listen to their stuff 😁 It is also worth mentioning 2M Blue is one of the best if not THE best sounding and tracking cartridge in its price range, period.
I see quite a few comments preferring the Audio Technica LP-120XUSB. My problem with that unit is it comes with a preamp and USB capabilities. Two things I don't need and don't want to pay for. The LP-120XUSB comes with a very cheap cartridge. So an upgrade would be needed. The Fluance has an excellent cartridge and I don't pay for what I don't need. Sounds like a win.
Love the sense of humor.
About auto stop: most of the more expensive turntables don't have that either nowadays. They tend to be fully manual. Semi-automatic and automatic turntables of high quality are often vintage turntables like the Sony Biotracer or Technics SL-15.
I love my RT85. It’s the very best bang for the buck! Period.
The Music Hall Classic is another contender. It has the feel of a direct drive, great looks easy set up, and sounds great

Thanks for the info. Exactly what I'm looking for.
I’m a big fan of the Uturn Orbit. I need to try the fluance
Basically agree. If I wanted a new table, for $500, the rt-85 is my choice. I know you must be aware, that some tables have removable arm wands, so you can switch carts. Not anywhere as easy as removable headshells. Upper end fluances, have 3 adjustable feet, which is a PLUS. Early 80 and 81's had irregular speed control. Speed would wander over a period of several seconds.
I also have some 12" LPs that are 45RPM. So, electronic speed change is a big feature to me.
Thanks Randy! Good stuff😊
I second the no fluance as well just because of the tone arm. U turn to ME looks like a better budget option. great vid thou keep um comin randy!

I love my U-Turn Orbit Special, but still wish it had a removable headshell. Would love to have two...one really good one and a cheap one for playing yardsale and used vinyl until I know it is "OK"...
Based on following you and your insightful videos. Plus the Fact you are a fellow Texan ;-) I purchased the RT-82 and have upgraded it with a Stanton 881S mk2 Cart with an oem D81S stylus It currently has an acrylic mat but will be buying the full platter soon... powered by a Yamaha R-S500 and sound output on a pair of JBL L100t'S with the upgraded t3 crossovers . I am enjoying this turntable tremendously .. Thanks for your channel I watch it daily
I prefer direct drive, so I purchased an Audio Technica AT-LP120XUSB a couple of years ago, and upgraded the cartridge and replaced the platter mat with a silicone-rubber mat. It has all the features you mentioned, except for the auto-stop. It sounds great. At the time it cost $250, so I think I got a good value for my money.

@@dogwalk3 Yeah, I noticed that it went up in price, but I think a lot of stuff did because of parts shortages and such. My Cambridge CD player and receiver have also gone up quite a bit too. I'm glad I purchased them before they did.
Must confess the last decent turntable I had was a dual 503, get you about the auto return, it’s surprising that a feature that was commonplace isn’t anymore
Even for more experienced hifi enthusiasts, having a few different cartridges has value. You can use the cartridge to change the sound of your system to fit with the music/record. I own about 15 cartridges and they're all tradeoffs - they're good at something and perform less in other areas. It's also part of the fun of playing records to be able to do this. From a cheap MM cartridge to a more fancy MC cartridge, they all get to play every now and then.

Bought the RT 83 last year. Changed to a Nagaoka MP-110 cart and really like it. The Ortofon Om-10 was ok, but I prefer the Nagaoka sound to the Ortofon sound. I think the Nagaoka MP-150 and up are better than Ortofon 2M Blue, although more expensive.
@MWorsa
7 ай бұрын
How would you describe the two sounds?
when you change out the shell & cartridge, you will probably have to rebalance the tonearm to the correct/recommended tracking force (unless each shell & cartridge have the same weight and the same tracking force). This takes more than 3 1/2 seconds.
I have the 85 and upgraded the cartridge to the 2M Bronze.
Awesome!! I knew id find one on your channel ..ignore my question ..heres the answer! ill check out more incase u have other tt recomendations...love your ..You dont have to pay tons to have a great system Mantra !!
Great fluance commercial well done
Just purchased an RT-82 (I already have a cart. to drop in, otherwise I would have purchased an RT-85N) for the sole purpose of transferring vinyl to digital so I can create CD's and Mp3's off the computer. I have heavy record clamp and will probably replace the standard rubber mat. My main table is a 50 year old re-built Thornes 125 MkII with an SME 3009 arm. It's way to fragile and heavy to move around the house.
Allthough I generally appreciate your no bullshit down to earth approach to hi-fi for the beginner, I have to point out a few elements here that seem debatable to me, if i may. Like the detachable headshell. I don't think this is so great an advantage. Not so many listeners may want to swap cartridges all the time, not to mention that you will have to recalibrate if it's a different cart; it's not that fast. Because why would you want to change for the same cart, right? Removable headshells were mainly meant to allow quick cart swap if accidents happened in broadcast and DJing situations. But for the casual listener? Not to mention that it's an unnecessary mechanical and electrical junction. Personnally, I only use fixed headshells, It's also a good thing that you learn how to install carts by yoursell too. And I don't think it's actually easier to align a cart on a removeable headshell. You still have to use a protractor on the table to do a proper job. It easier to install, though, i'll give you that. The other thing about their line of products that bugs me, and you mentionned it yourself, is that upgrades are mainly cartridges. What kind of TT value is that? You may go and buy any cart out there if you want a better one. The thing is that you never really get a better turntable. Spindle, motor, tonearm, plinth are all the same. I've experienced an RT81 at the shop, once (I sell sell and repair TTs) and I notice it's poor built quality. The azimut was far from on point, I had to adjust the lift and correct the speed and in the end, it just made a Nagaoka MP110 ($219.CND) sound harsh with bad confused bass response and no "tone". Yep, that was an upgrade allright! Worse than an Ortofon OM5. It was a shocking experience to me. I can only conclude an Ortofon 2M Blue on this arm would partly be a waste. I haven't tried the acrylic platter, though. So, what they basically have is good relationships with cartridge manufacturers from which they buy in bulk and a plant in Taiwan. As for adjustable feet, sure it's a fine feature, but leveling the piece of furniture your TT stands on is an even better idea. A few Audio Technica models under $500 have electronic speed control. But i don't care doing it by hand, and I spin many 45's. It's as you wish, it's just about where the money goes. I would prefer a better tonearm. Same for auto stop. There's really not much wear in the run out groove, there's no signal there. Only, if it's a very sloppy press, you'll hear it loud and you'll run to lift the arm! All this said, you still might be right, I don't know if there's any other TT at $300 or $500 price point that sound better and is as convenient. I haven't heard a UTurn TT yet. Have you? Audio Technica makes many TTs too under $500 besides the LP120. Haven't heard them all either, but the LPW50 is pretty decent. Music Hall is to be considered too. But they're all closer to $500 than to $300. I'm not sure, but I really hope there are other options. I hope i didn't sound rude, I'm just not good enough in english , so I go straight to the point.
Hey Randy, I'm not sure you will read this post but just letting you know that Santa is bringing me an RT83 for the same price as the RT82. These are on Amazon UK and I errrr. Santa paid £350. I contacted the good folk at Fluance and they still do not realise the market is alive and kicking across The Pond. Strange. I've had it out and am very impressed with the quality, fit and finish. It's heavy!! Fantastically so. Santa says I have to wait until Christmas Day to sample the delight bah humbug. This is replacing a ProJect T1 that I've had for 2yrs and I'm glad to be giving it to my Son. It has been one of the most over-hyped decks I've owned. Have a wonderful Christmas and keep up the insightful, impartial and very funny take on all things AV and HIFI. Craig, Nottingham, England. P.S. I have an unopened Physical Graffiti that will be the test- loud and proud! Sorry no Metallica.
Thank you!
I love my Fluance RT-85. I bought it refurbished from Fluance for $50 less than list. Had it for two years now and it hasn't let me down. I would say it's the best TT I've bought new. This was my first new TT. Also, I compared it to a ton of other tables - three to be exact. And it killed them. They were all cheap POS tables. Well, actually one is pretty good, and it was free. The RT-85 was the top of my price range and I still couldn't get it unless I got a deal. I'm really happy with it, haven't compared it to anything in its price range, but I don't need to because records sound awesome on it.

Hi Randy, how do you upgrade and 82 to the 85? Is it just the cartridge and the acrylic platter? Anything else you upgraded for yourself?
My audio obsession started in the 80's stationed in West Germany, so I bought the best that I could afford at the time the Technics SL1600. I also had it gone through by Joel, The Turntable Guy, before he passed. It's basically the 1200 without the slide pitch control plus this one is full auto and still direct drive. I don't have the spouse to tell me how to spend my money, so I can buy whatever my paycheck can buy. However, besides the occasional cartridge and headshell I think I'm set. Is there something that I'm missing by not having that Fluance 85? Please, those with knowledge of Technics let me know what you think.
The Flauance 81+ elite also has an acrylic table.
If you can manage $600 and just want one turntable to never tweek and just sound good as is forever, I'd go rega P1, I just like that long tonarm. For more flex with upgrades there is the debut carbon evo at $600. At $500 the best value is that rt85n. But at $400 I like that uturn with a grado. Or with a preamp built in the drop version of the lp40n. Or for diect drive the lp5
Auto stop, eventually. It takes too long for the auto stop to engage. My only complaint. I agree, the RT85 is a great value and fine turntable for $500.
I believe the Millenium Falcon doesn't look like much, but has it where it counts. ;)
Nirvana black album (a greatest hits album). 45 RPM. That’s a good record. Many retro EP extended version albums… 45. And of course, those old juke box singles… 45. You may not need 45 now, but the more you nerd out, the more you’ll need it 😂
I'd love an affordable Fluance TT with direct drive and Ortofon 2M Black.
Amen, Randy. I couldn’t agree with you more. I bought a UTurn orbit. There is nothing wrong with it but I wish I would have bought the RT85. I would have saved money in the long run. I would also have liked the auto stop and removable head shell.

Great video cheapaudioman! Keep them coming. I also like the dart board thingy with your face on it.
I was going to get a rega p1, then I realised I constantly leave my records playing to do other things, I'll be buying a fluance...
I purchased the rt85 several months ago, it is/was a nice TT, it's a beautiful TT and worked and sounded great, BUT... the amount of static was unbearable, I don't know if it was the acrylic platter or just something about the electronics, but it was insane, I could actually see sparks when I removed a record from the platter, I have 2 other turntables and neither of them have ever done anything like that, Every time I removed a record you could hear static electricity coming off the vinyl, I have no idea why, Do any of you? I ended up sending it back. So I'm back to my ATLP 120x and JVC QL7... NO STATIC AT ALL...????
Have you reviewed the Rega p1? I think they need to be reviewed before these grand statements.
looking to pickup a RT 85 with Ortofon Blue 2 cartridge, I currently own a mounted Nagaoka MP110 cartridge but Fluance says this cartridge won’t work on the 85 due to tracking angle , the 85N has a higher mounted tonearm - just wondering if you have had any problems using different cartridges on the 85
I love my RT85 (with both Ortofon blue and MP-110) but to be honest the controls for lowering the tone arm feels flimsy and cheap. I wish Fluance would address this issue.
Randy - I purchased the 600M 3 years ago and they are still in the box;; never opened. I work abroad so I do not have time when I am home on leave to set up a 2 channel system. My question is I have been considering purchasing the Reisong A10 or 12 and running them in sort of a quasi mono block configuration. I want to attach a cd on one amp and a Fluance direct drive turntable on the other side. Have you ever heard of this type of configuration? Is this sonically feasible? Cheers Don Johnson
Non removable head-shell warning to wise: Mid 2020, I pulled wires out of a new TT, non removable head-shell. Did not loosen wires to let it drop before I went for the back of the cartridge. I thought I know what I am doing but only in the past for years had removable headshell TT and now older eyes and could not see mistaken wires from connectors.
im convinced on the rt 85. I need a phono pre amp. What would you pair the rt85 with for mostly 80 90 2000's. mostly rock and pop alternative.
@johnboard7770
Жыл бұрын
I have my RT85 paired with the Schiit Mani 1. I have not heard it with the Mani 2 but would guess that is an equally good or better pairing.
I also consider Fluance about the best value and quality table on the market for the price and If I still didnt have my old Harman Kardon T40 from back in the days when the dinosaurs still roamed the earth and still working beautifully I would buy one in a minute - and I still may because I really like what I see with Fluance design. I grew up in the 70's and 80's when even the cheapest entry level plastic base turntables from say, JVC & others had a knob or switch for the speed control etc, as well as swappable headshells, auto return etc. - this malarky of so called "high end' manufacturers making you swap belts on an (exposed) pulley (?!) to change speeds and saying its to "reduce noise" is a lame cheesy sales ploy to cheapen the design and its ludicrous, they do it so they dont have to include any kind of electronic or mechanical speed change mechanism so they save money and engineering cost, simple as that. You even see this on uber custom european high end tables costing thousands albiet for different reasons such as overall designs that require it, but in the real world ill be damned if im paying a grand or more (or much more) and having to manually change belts on a pulley like its some kind of Harbor Freight drill press. Same with swappable headshells, it costs more to make a tonearm with a threaded cartridge heaadshell fitting than to just stamp out some kind of tube and flatten it on the end as if it came out of a bench vise in someones basement - theres nothing exotic about it, its just more cost saving and selling it as "a lightweight minimalist tonearm" - BS - but I love the Fluance approach of good quality, value and performance at a sane price. Id be happy with just an RT81 as it has the internal belt, even Fluance does the external belt thing and i just dont care for it, many are OK with it but then im an old guy stuck in my old ways- UGH-!!

I have been playing vinyl since the 60's, yes I'm old. At some point any turntable will have speed problems and need adjustments. I see nothing on the Fluance to adjust the speed. Is there a way?
The turntable thingy with your picture looks like Walt from breaking bad...if he had that beautiful hair on his head
Only the 80 and 81 have the built in preamp
Is the turntable direct drive or belt driven? I like turntables that have a level built in. I see it is belt driven. Important to have direct drive with variable speed.
What’s a cartridge and why do I need to change it? The only cartridges I know are for the Atari 2600 and NES.
Randy Rocks!
Hey Randy, I bought the RT85 at your suggestion, and couldn't be happier. I'm considering getting an RT 83 as a replacement for my AudioTechnica LP120 (bedroom) that is having problems, but also am considering the RT85N since the price difference if I were to get the Nagaoka M110 for the rT83 would be negligible. What do you think?

@@mygarart2764 I have considered that, but since I have the 85, I thought it would be nice to be able to swap cartridges between the two turntables. I'm still considering the Techniques...

@@ptg01 thanks, I’m aware of that, but I don’t believe the techniques offers a model with the Nagaoka cartridge. I could but it separately, but would likely have to mount it. S as I said, it’s still a consideration.

@@docwells7 I don't know what cartridges comes bundled with the SL1200's and other variants but the fact that they are all removable head shells makes it so much more practical !
It's a pity they only distribute in North America. Pro-Ject has 54! models and only one affordable one with removable headshell, the newly released Debut Pro S, and that comes with no headshell, but a custom made concorde cart 🤦
Four big reasons not to get one. The counterweight/stylus force is impossible to set up. Once the counterweight is balanced, the stylus force dial does nothing but spin. And the balance point is nowhere near the "clocks" you're looking for when putting it on. Oh, and the anti-skate? Set it to the "right" force and it whips to the outside so aggressively you'd think it was auto-returning. Oh, and the "auto stop" doesn't. And the manufacturer apparently doesn't give a crap. This was on a top of the line unit.

I had my RT-84 up and running in 30 minutes. I had none of this problems. All I used was a stylus gauge and a protractor. Anti Skate works fine. Auto stop takes a little longer than I would like, but it works fine.
Convinced!

@@ZZZ_ZZZ_ZZZ_ZZZ_ZZZ Well it's not the 1200 but it's been an absolutely wonderful, still in prime condition, Technics D202 with a vm 95ML cartrige that pleases me very much.Thank you.
I have had the RT-85 for about a year now and have had so many hours of musical enjoyment playing vinyl. I would certainly be interested if they came out with a step up turntable that allowed for tone arm height adjustment so more cartridges could be used. Many moving coil cartridges are to tall to be used with the tone arm. Moving coil cartridges are supposed to have better Chanel separation and more nuances in the sound. So now I am considering a significant upgrade to my turntable.
Wish you showed how it works
I haven't had a Fluance yet but when it comes to turntables designer experience is critical, I feel that some of the old classic British brands might be a better choice

Performance wise, I would tend to agree especially due to experience. However, the amount of TLC required on the likes of LP12's or Avid's can be a bit overwhelming to novices. There's enough different TT's out there for all sorts of vinyl enthusiasts.

@@hersheypants731 I had the Planar10 for a month when the Apheta 3 cartridge left channel stopped working. The dealer then questioned my integrity... so I returned it. Cheap Audio Dude.....I know you probably think I'm a "Fly in the Ointment", "Pain in the Rectum", aggravating kind of a viewer that you really wish would unsubscribe type of a guy....and to all of that I would have to answer, "Guilty as Charged"....And with that in mind I come to your "Royal Cheapness" with a humble request. I have in my possession a vintage circa 1979 Rotel RC-2000 preamp(they call it a 'control amplifier'). This thing has a very fine phono section in it complete with adjustable capacitance and resistance.....and.....to finally get to my point....Moving Coil inputs. I would love to hear your thoughts on moving coil carts and would really appreciate maybe some reviews of affordable moving coil options. I could buy some moving coil carts "willy-nilly" and waste my hard earned cash hoping to get lucky, but I would much rather you spend yours and share with me your findings....Please tell me that you might have some reviews of this nature coming in future installments. As always, thanks for your great, entertaining content!
If you swap cartridges, you'll probably have to at least rebalance the arm, and dial in the correct VTF. Not quite 3 secs. So quick hot swapping may not be possible without, say, two "identical" arms, etc.

Sadly, no such thing as VTA adjustment on Fluance. So I added mats to compensate for difference in cartridge heights and seems to work well.

@@ptg01 I suspect you mean VTA - vertical tracking angle - whereas VTF is the vertical tracking force at the cartridge stylus, as set by adjusting the tonearm counterweight once the arm has been properly balanced to "float" with zero VTF.

@@SeeTeeShock My bad. VTA is indeed what I meant.
Does Fluance sell a direct drive automatic? Bought an AT-LP120 USB was very disappointed it was fully manual. Of course I just assumed the tone arm would arrive back to its home after playing the record. I mean, I've only been playing vinyl on record players since the mid 1950's!!! They all were automatic. Was really upset when I find they make them in this day and age MANUAL.
PRO-JECT PERIOD. I had a fluance for a week, returned it. Bought PJ Debut and a month later PJ Evo for my shellac set up. Wonderful instruments.

Why don't you get a record playing jukebox collection or something.
