Hey guys. this is my final review of my brand new 2018 Mercury 25hp outboard motor that I recently purchased from Bass Pro Shops, and was able to find-tune through the help of the great folks at Fallon Marine! This is an on-the-water review that demonstrates the motor from trolling to going wide open.

    Great to see you out with your son. Hope to get out with my son this summer. Also, I attached a line to my trim pin, tied on and then heat shrinked to keep it in place, just in case when doing manual trim settings. Like you said, if that thing slips... into the lake it goes. (also, why am I watching boat videos in the middle of winter?)

    @@TinyBoatNation There are two Mercury-brand Spitfire 4-blade props that fit the Mercury 25HP EFI (2006 or newer). Both are the same diameter, but differ in pitch. The Mercury website has a helpful online calculator that will help select which is best for your boat size and weight. The two Mercury part numbers are 48-8M8026650 (9.3 x 9.5 pitch) and 48-8M8026655 (9.3 x 11 pitch). You can search for these on Amazon or check a local Mercury dealer for pricing. Mercury claim improved holeshot and holding with no loss in top speed on equivalent pitch 3-blade prop. www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/propellers/selector/#!/step-one I have a fairly heavy 16.5ft v-hull with the 25HP. My original 3-blade was 9.9x10 and struggled when boat got weighted down with just three of us and our fishing gear in the boat. The 11-pitch was wrong for me.. was too much even with just me in the boat as it slowed engine RPM a lot; but might be okay for a lighter boat. I swapped and ran the 9.5-pitch today and was very impressed how it did. Am hoping it makes a difference and when loaded with 3 guys and all our gear next week fishing.

    I had to to change out the 1988 35hp 2 stroke mercury last year and got a used (9 hours on it) mercury 25hp elpt 4 stroke that had a 10 x 8p prop and won't get my old (1988 bass tracker, 16', guide V special) on plane, my max speed was 15 mph. I've been told to go with the 9.3 x 9.5p to solve my problems. According to all my calculations my total weight, boat, motor, batteries, etc is 1,250#. Unfortunately they don't have any "prop demo dealers" in my area. What was the diameter of your 11 pitch 4 blade that you like? Thanks and tight lines. Mike

    Your motor may need to come a little higher . You should not see any splash coming in while your running . Cavitation plate should be even with the bottom of the boat . Shim it and you may pick up 100 or 200 rpm’s as well . Maybe 1/2’’ or more .

    If it’s there then you should be about right . But it’s not worth the risk to run much higher than that. You can get a lot out of it from being in just the right spot . Have fun .

    My 25 yammie is 1 1/2" above bottom of Hull, I can gain another 2mph and 150rpm going up another 1/2" but I get blow out on hard turns. It's a compromise. I'd recommend a jack plate to fine tune and also get the prop further back from transom into cleaner water.

    If you want more speed you need to put that motor on a jack plate. The more of the lower unit (including cavitation plate) you have in the water the slower your boat will go because of the extra drag created. Simple hydrodynamics. The water pickup needs to be just below the surface and the cavitation plate just above the surface when running at full throttle. www.boats.com/how-to/the-outboard-expert-boost-speed-with-outboard-engine-height-adjustments/

  • @omieyouknowme

    @omieyouknowme

    Both right answers. I use a jackplate to get into really shallow waters I can still tilt motor to shallow drive with jackplate so water pickup is in the water. Will draft 3-4" with motor n shallow drive on jack plate.

    A straight ran along the bottom of the running surfaces, should extend to right at the top water intake hole, well below the cav plate. The flow of water after the trailing edge of the hull begins to rise pretty quickly. My background is decades of very fast outboard setups, and even at 100mph and the running angle of the hull, waters flow doesnt print as low on the gearcase as a straight edge would suggest.
