After getting the right prop and trim setting, this is the best performing motor that I have. It blows away the 2-stroke equivalents! I love this outboard motor for sure! Perfect set up for my boat.
Check out my series on outboards! This is the initial process that I went through to get this motor from the Bass Pro Shops in Las Vegas. Super awesome experience! I'm going to begin doing a lot more outboard videos because they are such a huge part of what a tiny boat is.

Nice review of the motor. I am very interested to see how it preforms with the smaller pitch prop on it. I think you and the guy with the 20hp motor should get together and run them on the same lake and see which one you like better

Its nice to see the 4 strokes getting lighter, as they are quite a bit heavier than comparable 2 strokes. The 2002 merc 9.9 4 stroke I have weighs 111 lbs and the later merc 9.9 4 strokes weigh 84 lbs.

Sounds like you did very well with buying the motor. I do agree with you. I probably would have done the 20 horse for 60lbs lighter.

I was looking at re-powered my 14' aluminum boat, and I was looking at actually the 15HP EFI Mercury. But after doing some price shopping online, I actually went with a 20HP EFI Suzuki instead for the less money. Local marine dealer sells suzuki, mercury, and yamaha so I'll be able to get parts and service if needed. Looking forward to all the advantages a 4 stroke offers.

I am going to be running the 20merc on my project. The 99lb dry weight was what really sold me! I am with you I don't think the extra cyl + 5hp is worth the added 60lbs.

Not a bad motor it will get better with time . One thing I did about a year ago is look at all the 25 horse and I went with the Yamaha short shaft 25 that weighed 126 pounds with the shifter on the handle like the 20 horse Merc has . I put it on a 16 foot mirrocraft a Laker with the open deck with live well. Mirro craft actually be built this boat with trim tabs that are very narrow but coming off the sheeting from the aluminum on the very back of the boat up on all their models.

Always love your builds, I wouldn't regret that motor at all, its a beauty. When you get it dialed for that boat it won't let you down that's for sure. Are you familiar with Buck Perry? He only used a 12ft aluminum tiller, You got the perfect setup for spoonplugging which involves a lot of trolling. I know people look down on it but his results are ridiculous and he was a genius, if I had that setup that's what I would be doing with no shame haha

I have a very similar boat to yours with a built out deck and everything. it's a deep V and I would say it's similar in size and weight if not pretty much the same. I have the 20 horsepower 4-stroke that you're talking about and it is ample power and speed. I get up to about 25 miles per hour and I do it pretty quickly. Maybe that information will help with your investigation. oh and the last thing I wanted to tell you is that the fuel mileage is incredible on these things. I run that 20 horsepower on a 3 gallon tank and I can literally go all day long before I'm getting near empty.

think about this - the horsepower is not the biggest thing because with a prop it is basically a fluid coupling much in principal as a tourque converter in an automatic transmission. getting that matched to the boat and tuned in will probably give better performance than the hp factor. trouble seems to be lack of information between boat manufacturers and engine makers to have the data to actually see what would be optimum in ones own personal set up.

Ok this question has nothing to do with this video but here goes . I started out with a simple cast deck in my 14 ft 70 something v bottom then I found your channel and it's all changed from there . So I have aluminum framing to hold the cast deck. I cut out a pic of plywood for the casting deck then laid under it and traced out where my storage compartment door would be and relieved I had space for more lids and compartments LOL . I don't have a shop to do all this in and it rained the other night and my plywood got wet and bubbled up in several places .witch really sucked but at least it happened now and not after I got it carpeted and put in permanently. So yesterday I was looking for someone things and came across some aluminum checkered plating that I forgot I had I think there's enough if I cut it right and braze it together I can make my cast deck from . Is there any reason why I would not want to use it as my casting deck .it's thick I'm not sure as to the exact thickness bit it was supposed to be floorings to begin with .and as heavy as my framing is it should hold a elephant but just wondering if there's a reason why I would not want to use it over wood thanks for any help you can give

Power to weight ratio is an often overlooked and under-considered attribute among boaters. It is a highly important factor for a lot of boats from micro skiffs to flats to bay to center consoles and so on. 20HP at 103lbs vs 25HP at 157lbs is nothing to think about. If you have no outboard and are looking to make your purchase today, of course you get the 20HP. That extra 54lbs is a group 29/31 battery or 9 gallons of gas. On boats this small and light, that is considerable. If you already have the 25HP, well, that is a tougher choice. If I had the 25HP on that boat and was not suffering any ill effects of a heavier outboard and had no issues with the outboard itself, I would stick with it. If I was looking to re-power, its 20HP all the way.

Fuel consumption is 1/3rd less with a 4 stroke, that's what most conversions are seeing. When I switched a 60hp 2 stroke for 60 hp in 4 stroke My boat lost 4 mph top end with everything else being equal. much cleaner, quieter and amazing fuel savings though.

If you pay attention to what the lady was saying about the HP ratings of the old engines vs new. There is a legitimate difference. Older motors were measured at the crank where as MOST modern outboards are measured at the prop so the power train loss has already been taken into account. Also, 4 strokes simply have a different powerband that really excells in the water, most of the time. Just like comparing a 2 stroke vs 4 stroke dirt bike. They make power differently.... My dad just went from a 78 Johnson 40 to a Yamaha 25 4 stroke and it's actually faster throughout the whole range minus very top end speed, the old Johnson was only about 2-3 faster probably due to slightly higher RPMs or prop pitch
