Final East German First League Teams: Where Are They Now?
Спорт
From 1990-91 champions Hansa Rostock, who went straight into Germany's Bundesliga, to 13th placed Energie Cottbus who are no longer even in the 3. Liga, HITC Sevens takes a look at the 14 teams who competed in the DDR-Oberliga, or NOFV-Oberliga, which was the top flight of East German football, in the league's final season prior to German reunification.

The DDR Oberliga teams were really done dirty by the DFB when the reunification happened, by only getting two teams in the Bundesliga.
@jonkernow4477
3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, but as most top players left for the lights and money in western Germany, the clubs were left to fend for themselves (when the DFB should of helped them) and the collapse of business/industry (fewer sponsors) the clubs would of very quickly been relegated anyway.
@kalleknall7804
3 жыл бұрын
quality wise 2 was about right...only dresden managed to survive a few years, while rostock were relegated right away. and leipzig when they got promoted a few years later played one of the worst bundesliga seasons ever if they put more than 2 they probably would have been slaughtered anyway
@jonkernow4477
3 жыл бұрын
@@kalleknall7804 all the best east german players had been poached by then Kalle. Totally unfair, like most east german businesses ruined by the west looking to make a fast buck. With the quality of player left in east Germany you are probably right tho.

Alfie ,you dropped this mate 👑
The reason BFC Dynamo was that successful is because they were massivly supported by the StaSi. Erich Mielke the infamous head of the StaSi was a supporter of the club. Often the best players of other clubs were forced to play for them and when that didnt help sometimes referees would activly favor Dynamo in fear of StaSi-repressions

Loved this video, it makes me want your Energie Cottbus video sooner! Would you consider doing one on the nefarious nature of Dynamo Berlin? How they came to power at the behest of the boss of the Stasi, and the naked nature in how they won 10 in a row is fascinating, looking at it with only a shallow knowledge

Yessssss always love a history video and have been looking forward to this one!
This is a great idea for a video! Great suggestion, and thanks for making it.
Small correction: The "er" bit in "Chemnitzer FC" merely indicates possession. The city is named Chemnitz and the "er" makes it the "football club of Chemnitz". Also, the far-right elements at Hansa Rostock have diminished considerably. A few years back, a leader of the local branch of a German far right party was spotted in the stands and he was, let's say... asked to leave by the supporters. I wonder how much of a PITA some of the pronounciations are for a non-native speaker though :D Edit: The football history of the city of Leipzig is a huge clusterfuck and might be worth looking at at some point in the future!
@christianseiffert6866
3 жыл бұрын
Also to mention to the far-right elements at Hansa Rostock changing: they have really some really famous supporters, considered to be more like far-left (e.g. Monchi, lead singer of german punk band FeineSahneFischfilet also as Rapper Materia, who played for the youth teams of Hansa Rostock). Just to bring more (imo) bright moments of eastern germany's fan culture. Also the Carl Zeiss Jena Hooligans are well known to reflect their non-support for neonazi groups in Thüringen.

Today's highest ranking East German team never played DDR-Oberliga at all, while Union Berlin did. The SSV Makranstädt, whose license was bought by RB Leipzig, was named BSG Turbine Makranstädt during the GDR times and never played higher than 3rd tier, which was the Bezirksliga at the time.
Great content Alfie, really informative and interesting

Really enjoyed this
Hallelujah, hallelujah! :)) Thanks, Alfie! Well researched again, and I believe such videos open you up to other viewers and over 30k viewers in 24 hours is quite good for me. Some small additions: - shout out to Erzgebirge Aue (Wismut Aue) long time DDR-Oberliga team and still going well in 2. Bundesliga! - I believe almost nobody really is sad about Dynamo Berlins fall as they were the Stasi team - as a Hansa fan, although all true, I believe the right wing politics have since been left behind mostly, Rostock is a beautiful city (oldest university in Northern Europe) with a great coast of the Baltic sea, so I believe we can leave it behind a little bit now
Sammer actually transferred to Stuttgart, where he won the Bundesliga in '92, then had a year at Inter Milan, before joining Dortmund.
I love all the German football content recently
Thanks for the good video! I'm glad you took a look at East German football, which was once so strong and is often neglected. However, as a Hansa Rostock fan, it bothers me that this club is only reduced to links to neo-Nazis in foreign reports. We certainly had problems here with the large number of Nazis in the 90s, but in the meantime the fan scene has successfully emancipated itself from right-wing influences. Two years ago, right-wing fan clubs left the Rostock fan club community because it had become "too left-wing" for them. Against this background, it is necessary to correct the former perception of this club!

indeed. rostock and hansa did not overcome the early 90s in the heads of most wessis and the foreign press alike. its a shame

I am still pioneering for Martin Rollins and he has never played in Germany but you still get a lovely thumbs up for your content
The first two out of the three European finals that East German teams played had less than 5,000 spectators in the stadium, mostly due to travel restrictions put upon East Germans by the DDR government. In the last one, in 1987, there were about 35,000 people to watch Ajax beat Lokomotiv Leipzig in Athens, Greece. Among them were about 600-700 East German fans who after thorough screening by the DDR government were allowed to travel. One of them took advantage of the opportunity and fled.
Great video, thanks,
Suggestion : teams in the inaugural English 1st division where are they now?

Ridiculously underrated Alfie. Keep it up!!

Well done _________ as that was brilliant. As a young lad back in the early 70's I used to hear the names of some of these teams on European football nights. Under the duvet with the radio pressed to my ear and Medium Wave fading in and out, the grille of the radio leaving marks on my lughole.
Great video
As a heathen yank who played soccer as a kid and persevered through the years where even a Sporting News sub didn't guarantee you European Football coverage, I found this very interesting and informative. Thank you! I also have a fair bit of German, English and Irish ancestry with some French so European soccer history in general interests me :)
