How An Austrian Team Became German Champions

Спорт

In 1941, 34-time Austrian champions Rapid Wien - anglicised as Austria Vienna - beat Schalke to join the likes of Hertha Berlin and Bayern Munich in the list of champions of German football.
In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the historical context both on and off the pitch, which led to a team from Austria winning the most prestigious football / soccer trophy in Germany.

Historical Fun Fact: Because the DFB was open to ALL german football clubs, foreign clubs competing for the german championship in the early years were a thing, as long as they were "german". The first runner up for the german championship in 1903 was the Deutsche Fußball-Club Prag (German Football-Club Prague). The club was founded by german jews who lived in Prague, which was a part of Austria-Hungary, back then.

Regarding the whole Austrian view on the Anschluss thing - first off, the Anschluss was indeed rather popular. Mainly because Austria was still reeling from the collapse of the Empire and in 1918, most people didn't think Austria in that form was able to survive as a country. The collapse also caused hyperinflation, which was staved off in the mid 20s, only for the economy to crash back down in the 20s and 30s. So the sentiment that Austria as a nation was not able to survive was still very prevalent, and the integration into the bigger Germany with a (seemingly) strong economy welcomed. Also, Karl Renner was born in modern day Dolní Dunajovice in the former german majority region of southern Bohemia, which had, in the waning days of WW1 together with the rest of Sudetenland already declared an Austrian republic. No referendum was given to the people in that region (just like South Tyrol) so Renner, as a member of the losing group in that exchange, obviously supported the annexation of the Sudetenland. As for Antisemite - before the war, most of the snippets used to support the thesis that he was an antisemite are lacking context. Namely, the conservative "Christlichsoziale Partei" used the same antisemitic rethoric as the German right, including the "jewish social democrats". Renner mostly appropriated that rhetoric with heavy sarcasm to attack those same opponents. The antisemitism post war was mostly in regards to former KZ inmates, as the Austrian government took the same stance that the allies did in the 1943 Moscow conforence (that Austria was Hitlers first victim), so from the view of the government at the time they were simply not responsible. So imo he wasn't unusually antisemitic for the time. He did also spend the whole post-Anschluss period under house arrest by the nazis. A rather cushy one compared to other social democrats, but still Obviously, in hindsight, especially his post WW2 positions, are incredibly wrong. I just wanted to contextualize the information slightly.

At least Vienna won the title when they were actually part of Germany. In the early years of german football, one of the best teams to compete in the german championship was DFC Prag, a german-speaking team from Prague, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
