The Football Club Without A Country: Who Are Sheriff Tiraspol?

The Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, better known as Transnistria, is an unrecognised, breakaway former Soviet state located between Ukraine and Moldova.
Whilst Transnistria, as it is better known, has struggled due it's lack of international recognition, the regions most successful football club, Sheriff Tiraspol, have flourished, winning 18 out of the last 20 Moldovan National Division league titles, and qualifying repeatedly for the Champions League and the Europa League.
In this short documentary, HITC Sevens takes a look at the story of Sheriff Tiraspol, the unrecognised nation of Transnistria, and what the future for the region may hold.

Having one or two, even three dominant teams just kills a league and makes it boring in my opinion. That's why I lost interest in UK football and more recently I've been enjoying the MLS. Say what you like about it, but the system is much more balanced, any team can win on any day, and anyone can win the league.

@@alliedatheistalliance6776 I agree with you, 100% percent bro. Any team can go from missing the playoffs to winning the whole damn thing within a year. For example, my Real Salt Lake finished third in the Western Conference, and lost to eventual winners Seattle Sounders in the 2019 MLS Cup playoffs. This season, we've been playing like a bunch of guys who look like they have much better things to do. In our conference, we're only above bottom team LA Galaxy by 3 points, and they have 2 games in hand. The Columbus Crew, who were bad last season, are third in the Eastern Conference. For God's sake, both Atlanta United and LAFC have been crap this season despite leading the ranks last season. This is why I love the MLS. There is never a boring moment in this league.

@Vla Lua the Tsar was overthrown by the Russian Revolution of February 1917 at this time Lenin was in Zurich Switzerland. He returned to Russia in April 1917. Neither he nor the Bolsheviks overthrew the Tsar. Lenin and the Bolsheviks launched a military coup in October 1917 aka the October Revolution which overthrew the Revolutionary Provisional Government as it was preparing for democratic elections. And Lenin was not a ‘major’ figure in the Bolsheviks he was the major figure.

Additional brief info about this small area with an interesting history :) My mother was born in Transnistria, so all my family mother's side comes from there, which has at least 200-250 years history in Transnistria (as I was really interested to check for the facts/documents from the archives back in the days for this proof). In Transnistria there was always moldovans the majority of the population, and of course side by side living with russians, ukranians, armenians, germans, lithuanians, bulgarians etc During the history our main ethnicity was a mix of moldavo-romanian (for the once that got triggered, yes etymologic speaking the term appeared in 15th -16th century or 10th as it's still being analysed when), but in general the main population with all the wars it remained the same there for more than 2000 years starting from the Dacian wars with the Roman Empire. Now about 2-3 centuries we had a new neighbour the Russian Empire which started their expansionist policy and got closer to us :). After 2nd world war even though the majority of the population in the teritory of the Transnistria remained moldovans, USSR or we can say already Russia because it was at the end of USSR at that time, managed to put in the leadership of the cities, towns, communities - russian people with separatists views so they could control the area and keep a destabilized situation. So long it was peace and so many nationalities lived in harmony. Just going a bit back in time, sad thing during the 2nd world war my grandma was saying that actually "the liberators" russian army compared to the german one was the worst when it comes to humanity they robbed, they have beaten people and many other sad things that I don't even want to mention here. So, in result we have year 1990 and these separatist leaders without actually considering people's wish, they start the political separation. And as the people of course were not supporting this, the separatist leaders brought russian cossacks to have it as a new police and to occupy this land. Of course having corrupt moldovan politicians didn't help the conflict as they didn't bring the army to defend the locals, but the people by themselves, the local police and volunteers tried to defend from russians (and unfortunately ukrainians also came with their army, national guard, etc to help russians.. this is also a sad story because ukrainians regreted afterwards and said that this was not their war). Btw moldovan side didn't have basic ammunitions, nor mentioning they didn't have tanks at all in the beginning, but hey managed to be so brave and just keep the positions while defending against tanks. On youtube you can find some videos, if someone will want I can add in the commentaries, there are amateur journalists just filming the situation during the war and asking the locals, no editing or bla bla bla, just videos that you can really see and make an impression of how the actions were happening during that time. Nowadays everything in media is manipulated to showcase the best for the side they represent, so it's almost impossible to find anything close to reality about this conflict. So with all the help from Ukraine's army, national guard and russian cossacks was not enough, they brought the russian 14th army, in order "to defend the locals" and yes "they defended like Crimea in 2013"(similar scenario), and thousands died and they kept on firing rockets and shooting people, provoking even after the peace was signed, you can also see that in videos filmed by the people during that time. They ambushed civilian buses and so on. Why I really wanted to write that here, because it's important to know, the last 30 years there was a big exodus of the moldovans from Transnistria. When my mother was returning to Transnistria during already the peace moments in 91', the russian army controlled all the bridges and many times didn't let people visiting their relatives. One time they didn't want to let the bus with civilians go back home and as my mother is always more brave than other people, she was the one from the bus to shout "I'm going back home, so let us return to our homes. You are not even from here to tell us what to do." next moment two russian officers threatened by putting two AK-47 towards her at short distance, shouting and saying many bad things, imagine the stress, but she ended up walking towards them and at some point they just didn't understood why she is risking her life so much and they just left her cross the bridge. Another interesting detail, I have a cousin in Transnistria that in the early 2000s because of the circumstances he went to their army and when I saw how they teach the young soldiers, I was shocked. On the agenda it was everyday, Moldova is an enemy, they always can attack us, even though in 90' it was a reason to defend our land our politicians didn't do nothing, so when you hear that Moldova can attack someone nowadays is really really funny and the level of the brainwash is like North Korea. BTW my cousin didn't get brainwashed, but many are because the real information doesn't get there, there is no freedom of press, you just see and listen one side of the events. So what we have at this time is a pseudo country, that got stocked in time. If you want to go back in time and visit a piece of USSR you can visit it as besides some buildings in Tiraspol and the modern football base through which they washed their dirty money nothing changed. There are many things to say and this is just a very long topic, but hopefully some people will find what I said interesting to know. This text is not against russians, but just to show the politics of this country. I really like russian people, culture and I have a lot of russian friends, I've been to Russia and again because of the history I speak romanian and russian as mother tongue (For the ones that don’t know why Romanian, because Moldovan language doesn’t exist as it’s the same language, but usually pro-Russians like to differentiate us :) ) Another crazy fact, they closed the romanian schools, so when the kids wanted to go to school they brought their militia to stop the teachers and pupils from entering and these are recent events. So you just have an option to go study in russian or leave Transnistria. Of course it's very hard to imagine these things in 21st century in Europe, while the European leaders are so proud of them when they order sanctions against Russia, but they don't do basic stuff and acknowledge the atrocities that happen under their nose. That's the history, my family went through it and I wanted to share it. So yes, we are still the same country even though, the Russian Empire has done everything to "Russify" it. :) BTW the last time when I visited a supermarket in the city of Grigoriopol, Transnistria which is the 5th by dimension ,almost everyone were speaking romanian and even I, was really suprised, but of course this is not in every town or village, there a cities that are almost full russified like the main city there Tiraspol. Peace! Say no to wars!

You kind of mixed up your history a bit from 2:25 to 3:25. What was described there was the history of Bessarabia (present day Republic of Moldavia) without Transnistria. Until the 1940's, Transnistria was never ever a part of either Romania, nor what is today known as the Republic of Moldova, nor of Greater Moldova from the Middle Ages. To put it shortly, this region was annexed by Romania in WW2 following the invasion of the Soviet Union (and it was a much bigger Transnistria also, not just a meager strip of land). After the Axis Defeat, the region was reduced to it's current borders and it became part of the Moldavian SSR at Stalin's orders, which has remained the same ever since. Anyway, keep up the good work, it was a great video nonetheless and hopefully you will do more material involving East European football history.

Robert O’Connor’s book ‘Blood and Circuses’ writes a great chapter on Transnistria. The source of the Sheriff corporation’s vast wealth is interesting and dubious too: essentially largely from the contraband market, which Ukraine has recently taken steps to stop by tightening its borders because a lot of cheap goods were smuggled into Transnistria via Odesa port in Ukraine. Moldova’s quite a corrupt society too; the poorest country in Europe I believe

For the record I'm Romanian (not a nationalist though - I often argue with Romanian Nationalists actually as I'm a Marxist) and I support your country's independence from Moldova as people's will for self-determination should be respected and Pridnestrovie, unlike the rest of Moldova's lands, never even was a historical Romanian territory! Anyway, the person who wrote this comment means no ill will towards your country or people - "Transnistria" is just the only English language name for the land... BTW congrats to Sheriff!
