I watched this movie with my mother and at the end I was crying like a child and she was confused. She asked me if I understood the movie and I could only say that I didn't know if I understood it, but I felt it in my soul.

Great answer!
As a mother who had to bury my 2 year old son, I know that this movie hit me in the gut. My son died 7 years ago and I still wake up every single morning and I cry because I dream of him every single night…and when I open my eyes I am pulled away from my dreams. I am pulled back to earth, where my son no longer is. But I relive those dreams and those memories throughout the day and I speak to my son and tell him about the things we would have done together if he were still here. Even something as simple as watching a movie with him. This movie, or any movie. Just to see his eyes and his sweet face taking in the world around him is what I dream of. This movie made me feel like even though I only got to spend 2 short years with my son on this earth, I specifically remember how beautiful his eyes light up when I held him infront of the Christmas tree and showed him all the pretty ornaments and lights. This movie reminds me to take in the beauty of the everyday, mundane things we sometimes take for granted because those moments are our entire lives.

Souls are eternal. Your son only sleeps now. He will sit close to the throne. You can see him again, when space-time ends. "Now they were also bringing their babies to Him, so that He would touch and bless them, and when the disciples noticed it, they began reprimanding them. But Jesus called them to Himself, saying [to the apostles], “Allow the children to come to Me, and do not forbid them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I assure you and most solemnly say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God [with faith and humility] like a child will not enter it at all.”"" Luke 18:15-17 AMP "Just as Moses lifted up the [bronze] serpent in the desert [on a pole], so must the Son of Man be lifted up [on the cross], so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life [after physical death, and will actually live forever]. “For God so [greatly] loved and dearly prized the world, that He [even] gave His [One and] only begotten Son, so that whoever believes and trusts in Him [as Savior] shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge and condemn the world [that is, to initiate the final judgment of the world], but that the world might be saved through Him." John 3:14-17 AMP

When He had gone in, He said to them, “Why make a commotion and weep? The child has not died, but is sleeping.” They began laughing [scornfully] at Him [because they knew the child was dead]. But He made them all go outside, and took along the child’s father and mother and His own [three] companions, and entered the room where the child was. Taking the child’s hand, He said [tenderly] to her, “Talitha kum!”-which translated [from Aramaic] means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!” The little girl immediately got up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they [who witnessed the child’s resurrection] were overcome with great wonder and utter amazement. He gave strict orders that no one should know about this, and He told them to give her something to eat. Mark 5:39-43 AMP
MY FAVORITE FILM. The experience of watching this film something that you feel in your body and is completely unique. Its a total sensory experience that is essentially about love, compassion and beauty.
Yes! One of the first art-house films I've ever seen. "A Hidden Life" is also highly recommended from the same director.

I’m convinced Terrence Malick is one of the greatest directors ever. Pushes the medium in amazing directions
James just casually reacting to one of the greatest films ever made in existence
This film is a religious experience, even if you have no "religion". It's a movie that happens to you, and like memory, it's the bits and pieces that stay with you. And the Beginning of Time sequence was done by Doug Trumbull, who did the effects for "2001"... after almost thirty years away from Hollywood.
HOLY MOLY!!!!! I have never suggested anyone react to this because I just never could imagine what a reaction to it would be like! I guess I'm about to find out! LOVE this movie, one of my favorites of this century so far. All of Terence Malick's movies up to "Tree Of Life" are fantastic. "The New World" is absolutely fantastic. "Badlands" and "Days Of Heaven" are 70s masterpieces. And you've seen "Thin Red LIne" and "Tree Of Life". That's all of 'em! (After "Tree Of Life", I haven't loved his subsequent stuff. He kind of peaked with this one!)
Another existential masterpiece of cinema is Don Hertzfeldt’s “It’s Such a Beautiful Day” - truly remarkable with one of the greatest and most beautiful endings ever!!

Saw this in the theaters. The birth of the universe sequence gave me goosebumps and made me feel small.
Not all of Terrence Malick's films work for me, but when they do they are something truly special. This is one of the best films ever made IMHO.
This is #1 on my list of greatest films. Malick at his peak. His three film run of Thin Red Line, New World, and this is just amazing.
Holy SHIT bro. This is so exciting. Malick is one of my favorites and I LOOOIOOOVE this film. This is one of my top of all time but it’s really hard to show to people and I totally get why not everyone can sync up with it, no hard feelings. Haven’t even watched your reaction yet but I’m happy to see you see it. I left the theater in 2011 a changed person, though it took a second watch for me to really get a full scope of it
I would never imagined to see someone reacting to my favorite movie! this movie is such an experience.
This is the type of movies the general public (blockbusters fans) hate and i love it for it. It makes you think on the meaning of life, love, death etc.. a true unique experience. A masterpiece.
I was 12 when I first saw this, it used to come on HBO when it had just released. On the days I was home alone i remember watching it and thinking it was the weirdest movie i had ever seen, but there was something about it that just kept me glued to the screen.

Another Malik masterpiece that evokes memories, thoughts and emotions about a family’s reaction to a tragedy. It doesn’t get any deeper or more moving! One of those movies that when it’s on? You can’t take your eyes off of it….🎉
One of my top 20 favourite films of all time - shocked to see you react to it, but I’m certainly not complaining 😂 (ps. You should check out Malick’s feature film debut “Badlands”)
masterful filmmaking of the highest quality
A beautiful film, in every sense of the word. This will always be one of my favorite things to exist. It's like watching these people's lives from the perspective of an angel witnessing the birth of creation and the birth and death of human life. This is the perfect example of what a film would look like from a philosophical perspective. I'm very happy you reacted to this one, especially with your unique and introspective perspective on it. It doesn't get mentioned enough in the films of this century, probably because of how abstract and philosophical it is but it's one of the most fascinating films ever made and everything from the music to the cinematography its all a masterclass in the medium.
If you have not seen it yet, I recommend "A Hidden Life" by the same director, Terrence Malick. A very similar style to this movie, but a completely different story. Beautiful film!
You gotta watch Malick’s The New World. It’s as beautiful & emotional as Tree of Life, but quite a bit easier to understand.
So glad you saw this. This is a one of a kind, beautiful film Hope you’re feeling better from your food poisoning
Terence Malick is truly under appreciated. One of the most unique, abstract storytellers and it doesn’t always land. That being said, when it does, it’s truly amazing.
One of the greatest films ever made. Malick's films are out-of-body experiences. Watch The New World (2005) next!
Yay! I never thought I'd see a reaction to this film. I'm so glad you liked it!
Such an intelligent review, I immediately subbed to the channel. Looking forward to more James VS Cinema.
I saw this when it came out, fresh out of college, and I was blown away by the visuals. It took me a while to digest the story it was telling, but when I got it, it just made the experience even more enriching. Such a great film.
It is my favourite film of all time. Terrence Malick is unmatched.
Love your reaction! Terrence Malick really knows how to get the most out of the medium. Check out Badlands and Days of Heaven if you haven't. Days of Heaven was almost entirely shot during sunrise and sunset, and the entire film glows golden as a result.
One of the most beautiful films I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing
Wasn't expecting this one! What a surprise! I was lucky enough to watch it in theatres and it was one of the most beautiful movies I've evver seen.
That universe scene is probably my favorite movie scene of all time.
This movie is such an experience. I will say that everyone who loves The Tree of Life owes it to themselves to seek out Franco Piavoli's equally gorgeous "Voices Through Time", which almost feels like an Italian sister film, both conceptually and visually.
FANTASTIC reaction! This is when "film-maker reacts" really comes into play!!!!! Not just anyone could handle this movie, but YOU totally got it! And totally on the money about "Tree Of Life" being in the same company as "2001", it's the only movie I compare it to! That middle sequence is incredible. He totally pulled it off! I see that dinosaur section as showing that mercy and compassion is (potentially) in nature as well as the indifferent, violent side of it. "Where does it come from?" It's asking that question about evil but it's also asking it about everything that's good. Man, my mind is blown just THINKING about this movie!!! Definitely no other film like it! Malick has not been able to top this movie since, but he has a new one coming out in any day now, so hopefully that will be a return to form. When he did "Tree Of Life", he had a very small but perfect filmography: Badlands (1973), Days Of Heaven (1978), Thin Red Line (1998), The New World (2000) and then "Tree Of Life". "New World" is about Pocahontas! Really fantastic movie. THANKS, JAMES! This was a special one!
I haven’t watched this yet but I’ve been waiting for your reaction to my favorite film for so long.
The Thin Red Line my man. The Thin Red Line. I was 14, skipped school, Saving Private Ryan was the big war movie at the cinema. There was another war movie on at the same time. I went and saw the Thin Red Line instead of Private Ryan. I made the right choice. I discovered Terrence Malick
One thing I love about this film is that whether you’re religious or an atheist, I think you can have a “spiritual” experience with it.
Mallick is a fantastic director, Tree of Life and The Thin Red Line are 2 of my favourite films, without Hans Zimmer (scored TTRL) and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki (shot TToL) they wouldn’t be anywhere near as impactful. TToL stunned me at the cinema, I love Lubezki’s low camera angled shots, we see everything from a child’s (height) perspective. Glad you enjoyed it. A different team, but A Hidden Life was a return to form for the director after a few films I didn’t enjoy, some stunningly beautiful shots.
I watched this movie ina a movie theater and it was a unforgettable experience to see all this images in a giant screen. Now as a cinematographer, I use a lot of references from this movie. Love the Emmanuel Lubezki's work (the cinematographer).
You were thinking about Florida Project. an interesting film in itself. I Like Malik's films. Here we see Trumble who created Kubricks effects employed and updated. Indeed a homage to 2001.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FILM OF THE 21ST CENTURY.
Tree of Life is one of those rare movies that hit me so hard I could only watch it once. Thanks for reminding me its time to watch it again.
Operating with camera and cinematographer DOP is non other than Emmanuel Lubezki. You my recognize his MO in other movies - The Revenant, Children of Men, Gravity, Birdman, Burn after reading, Ali, Meet Joe Black, Great Expectations, Slippy Hollow, New World. His career is like the best of album. The first man to win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography three years in a row, for his work on Gravity 2013, Birdman 2014. and Revenent 2015.
The F/X are from Douglas Trumbull ("2001", "Blade Runner", "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"). He was the best.
I Love Terrence Malick, and I love your reactions ! Perfect combo !
Such a beautiful film. The malick/lubezki duo is a pleasure in sight, curiously lubezki adopted a lot of malick's philosophy in terms of filming with natural light. Emmanuel lubezki has always been a good cinematographer, Children of men, The Revenant, Birdman, y tu mama tambien and many more. he usually collaborates a lot with his friends cuaron and iñarritu, of course also with malick in many other projects.
One of my fav films, great reaction
Really great insight, James! Terrence Malick is one of a kind! Don't know if you've seen any of his other movies, but would love to see what your insight into those are as well! Great video!
Emmanuel Lubezki is the cinemathographer too James, Children of Men, Birdman, The Revenant, Gravity..., two beast behind the camera
people often talk about the Terence Mallick gene. Either you get his films or you just don't and there's no predicting who's gonna fall into either camp.
I believe what we are witnessing here is the struggle between the way of nature, represented by Pitt and the way of grace, Chastain and our struggle to cope with those. A reviewer said that if ever a film maker had put his religious views on film it was Malick in this movie.
This movie vies with DAYS OF HEAVEN as Malick's best work. Malick's films are the closest to my own sensibility of any filmmaker, even Tarkovsky. The problem is that I didn't know you could make movies like this until I saw them, and now it's too late: you can't make a film like this without people thinking "You're ripping off Malick!" So now I have to find a different way to express my non-narrative inclinations, which is difficult.
My three fave directors.1.Tarkovsky 2.Malick 3.Kubrick
So glad you watched this
Hey James! Tree of Life is probably one of the more esoteric films you've reacted to on the channel, I'm glad you enjoyed the experience. Tree of Life, I saw in theaters when it came out. I was very surprised and very moved by this film. There's so much to think about, so much to take away with this film. I think every viewer will feel different things when watching this, it brought back memories from my own childhood. The creation sequence remains one of the most unique ideas I've seen in a film. It may be a bit on the nose, but it is undeniably powerful.
Also, I think that Malick used the practical effects person from 2001 to do the universe and primordial Earth sequence
Tree of Life and The Thin Red Line are terrific. Malick’s other movies are similar in style but different in content. I’d recommend Days of Heaven and Badlands next.

You should try next Melancholia :)
A great movie. Saw it in the theater when it came out and it reminded me of “2001” in terms of its scope, beauty, and mystery. It’s pushing for something beyond just entertainment, and whether one feels it succeeds or not, you gotta respect its striving. Kudos and respect to you for covering it!!
Got you.. famously shot on an iPhone... we talkin about the family that lives right next to Disney World or whatever? Looking it up... Yeah "The Florida Project" directed by Sean Baker.
Unforgettable experience, especially in the theatre.
Very interesting to hear this commentary from you on this film. 👍
Thought it was pretty cool that I just watched your Come and See reaction and in that you say that the filmmaking reminds you of Children of Men, and then in this film you said the filmmaking reminds you of Come and See. Emmanuel Lubezki was the cinematographer for The Tree Of Life and Children of Men so its cool to see that little connection which i guess means that your a fan of Emmanuel Lubezki's work(He's also shot films like Birdman, Gravity, The Revenant and so on). Mans knows how to move a camera around especially with all the films he shot with Terrence Malick.
Masterpiece. There's nothing else to say.
'A Hidden Life' is one of Malicks great films too, its long and a true story, beautiful and tragic

One of these days you PLEASE have to watch Enter the Void! It is an existential dream of a film with so many scenes that feel REAL.
I remember watching this late at night after getting the DVD from Netflix. I miss exploring movies without the distraction of the modern internet, even in 2011 it wasn't as bad as it is now. Terrence Malick made two movies and then had everyone in anticipation for twenty years when he made "The Thin Red Line." Jessica Chastain barely says a word on screen for most of the movie.
Amazing you got all that out of one viewing. You've got a gift, bruv.
This is the rare epic arthouse film.
damn I waited so long for that one ^^

That’s what I was thinking
I saw this in the cinema when it came out, it was probably the first..'different' film I had seen, and it stayed with me for years and I called it one of my favourite movies (I had at least seen 2001 already, to which it is obviously indebted). Being an overtly Christian hollywood film is only the beginning of how 'different' it is. I wonder if I would still, knowing a lot more about film now than I did then, still love it the same or would I find it too overwrought if I were to watch it again. The choral music played during the opening is by the composer John Tavener, I remember it giving me oosebumps too
One of my favorites and one of the best films made in the last few decades, if not of all time imo.
Should’ve watched the extended version
This is one of my favorite movies. Another favorite of Malick's that you should check out: "Days of Heaven". It is his second film (from the 1970s). Also, more recently, "A Hidden Life" is good.
I DO see what you mean. This camera movement is more specific than I thought myself the first time seeing it... but you are delineating and elucidating things with precision. I like it. I think you're getting better at this (not to take away from your previous work I'm just sayin').

This movie is transcendental is all I'm gonna say.
Hardly any dialog but the cinematography tells the whole story. I watched when it came out, with a friend, I understood everything. The relationship between son and mother, father and son then the generational influence between parent and child as the child grows old. Another underlining concept I saw was nurture vs nature.
