No other show has captured the stress of cooking and working in a kitchen better than this one. Sometimes I forget they're acting a pre-written script.

The film Boiling Point with Stephen Graham also does a really good job but The Bear is outstanding on every level.

The restaurant nightmare was the part that really sold me on this show early on. I was in the industry for 17 years but have been out since 2013 and I still get the occasional "I'm stuck in the weeds while the shit is hitting the fan and everybody around me is yelling something different," nightmare. Also, every family run restaurant/tavern I've worked at had a Richie-type. That character is too real

"Food And Wine's best new dick head" is one of my favourite lines from the first season. The dialogue in this show is absolutely peak.

"Richie, go fuck yourself" "69 all day Chef" always cracked me the fuck up.
The very first minutes alone tell us why Carmy is the way he is. When you're verbally abused into being the best, you feel like you can't afford to to be less than that.
@pabloc8808

I really appreciate how they made it so despite the the New York kitchen being pristine and spacious, and despite Carmy not being weeded, it feels much more claustrophobic and frankly horrid to be in, whereas the Beef is cramped and dirty and the lighting is shit and Carmy is clearly in the shit but it still feels like you're breathing fresh air once the scene moves away from NYC and to the Beef
Richie let the crew think those were his cigs on the stove, causing the C rating. Another example of Richie taking the fall to protect the people he loves. Cuzzin is my fav character
@hellfish2309

Maybe, but I Richie really doesn’t like or respect himself, and as defensive and insecure as he is, I legit think he believes it was him Which is not to say it’s both: there’s clearly more broken with the restaurant than a hole in the wall or cigs on the cooktop, but Richie feels powerless to address it after having been unable to save Mikey

Ritchie really thought they were his cigarettes so he wasn't taking the fall. You don't have to create a perceived goodness. Ritchie is a great character just as he is. He's a real asshole, but you don't have to look far to see the depth of his character.
@ShelbyBaby27

@marthasharp4943 Do you think Richie didn't smoke for rest of the day? He didn't gather the crew together to say it wasn't him, he presumably wrote Carmy on the C rating in the window. The bachelor party brawl, Carmy should have also been locked up, but like the Jawbreaker fight Richie is jumping in for Carmy.

@@ShelbyBaby27 he stood up for Carmy but this is not what happened in this episode. He thought they were his cigarettes.
This is legit the only piece of cooking media that properly adapts, not just the feel on the line during a rush, but the *DREAMS* that all cooks have of being absolutely fuckin’ destroyed by that ticket printer. I’ve been out of the game for a couple years at this point, and sometimes that little fucker will still show up randomly in dreams, start printing orders for me, and I’ll listen to it. Like, I’m at a house party from high school, flirting with the one who got away, and the ticket printer shows up and starts spitting out drink orders! “Oh fuck, where they do they keep their schnapps in this fucking kitchen!? Fuck, another Highball?!”
I swear, you get lost so much in all the chaos that you forget how comedic the show can also be occasionally

I don’t think I ever..laughed hard but I definitely chuckled a lot or thought stuff was funny now that I think about it. I feel like I got so invested in the drama or chaos laughing was something I might’ve forgot about.
The thing i love the most about the show is, that it immediately makes you fall in love with the characters.
i love that this show drives it’s narrative almost exclusively through the characters and their interactions. No unrealistic plot twists, big sets or special effects, just great character work man.
Joel McHale (the New York chef) is based on Charlie Trotter (a notoriously verbally/mentally abusive chef who had a famous restaurant in Chicago). Grant Achatz (of Alinea (also in Chicago) worked for Trotter and almost gave up his life in the food industry for how miserable his experience was.
I love how slowly more reactors are getting into The Bear- it's such a fantastic show that's beautifully shot. I love hearing your little breakdowns of how it's filmed and hearing your afterthought for each episode so far :)
I rank this show up with some of the 11/10 television greats. Absolutely top tier.

So glad you're watching this show James, it's absolutely phenomenal! My favorite moment this episode is with Ritchie in the car, talking to his family. You're completely right about the eyes, they composed that shot perfectly and the actor was extremely compelling, showing the pain the character is going through. It really turned me on Ritchie, you see how much love he has, and can understand that he's lashing out and railing against everything because his world is in freefall, and I think he's terrified. Excited the next episodes! Thanks James!

Why I find him so compelling.
I used to be a line cook at Shake Shack and everyone was nice and respectful. There was just always so much work to do and it was ridiculously stressful. Food workers don’t get enough respect
I don't remember what award the screenplay won, but I know that the screenwriter had to borrow money from his family to buy a suit for the gala because they paid so little before the strike.
Episode 4 has one of my top favourite little moments in any tv show. The show is just watching people learn respect for each other other and respect for their work, and it's great.
I don't know how they do it, but it just keeps getting better every episode through season 2... if they nail season three it just might in the conversation for one of the best tv shows ever
This show is a roooooooollercoaster. Holy shit. I worked as the head waiter at a small 50 seat restaurant. Allways worked alone during my lunch shifts. Remember the feeling of never ending orders and having to just not...stop...moving,cleaning, taking and managung new orders not too quickly not to fuck over my chef, while keeping my cool and "working" the guests and having to step in the kitchen all the time to finish up stuff, just me and the one chef for several hours This show captures that stress, adrenaline, joy and fear like no other. I sometimes miss those times, but dont know If i would be able to handle that shit no more...
I love this show and I'm so happy you're reacting to it. Yes, all the show ingredients are excellent.
After finally starting and finishing both seasons yesterday I instantly feel like it's probably one of the best shows I've ever watched in my entire life

Mid 2000’s, I became a line cook for a busy hotel. I say ‘became’ because, originally, I was supposed to be a bellman! My boy hooking me up could only get me into the kitchen so, I took it. Never in my life have I been more on edge. I’ve worked with kids, I’ve worked in a steel mill and never have I been more stressed out. I learned to smoke a cigarette in 60 seconds! I only lasted 6 months and it’s a miracle I made it that long. The final straw was the head chef being called at home to come in because I had a dining room of 150 people waiting on food!…That was the second time that happened. It was a complete nightmare and watching The Bear and it’s accuracy brings it all rushing back but the show is so good it’s still worth the watch!
Congrats to you for viewing a piece of art!!
I feel like this show got its love from the chef and line cook community but now it’s finally getting the attention it needs from the filmmaking community
Goooood I’ve needed your reaction to this show your picking up and noticing everything other people aren’t
I remember working in a fancy restaurant when I was in high school. I bussed tables and the women customers used to just hand me their mink coats to put away. We didn’t have a coat check room. I used to throw them all on a table in a storage room with my dirty hands. Crazy. The kitchen was always insanely busy. Half the staff was drinking and on drugs. For my dinner break every night the chef would cook us whatever we ordered. It was stressful but nice. After work very late the staff would go to a bar.
I am loving your reaction to this and I can guarantee it gets even better.

Yes Jeff
I'm so due for a rewatch of this! ✨
Wait til you get to the second season, forks and fishes, remember those titles. Best episodes in the series which says alot.
I think the thing that sucked me into this show was how fast paced it was right at the jump. I feel like a lot of shows now try to make it a big slow burn and draw it out so much that it’s easy to get bored at the beginning. But this show just started out at a lightening speed and it worked so well. Because if you start out at that speed, you can continue at that speed but also slow it down once you have an audience who is invested in the characters already One of my favorite romcoms ever is When Harry Met Sally and it’s for the same reason. The humor is fast paced and it doesn’t let you breathe.
Great reaction bro! 👍🏿
Okay, this is completely random, but for some reason I remembered the show The Knick (2014) starring Clive Owens and directed by Steven Soderbergh..... You would absolutely dig the modern feeling cinematography and editing.
3:28 That's Joel HcHale! He is freaking hilarious in Community, highly recommend if you haven't seen it already 👌🏻
You hav no idea how I cannot wait for you to get to episode Forks. And it is so far away. And there are too many journeys before it, but it is the meaning of this masterpiece, and it is Pulitzer.

There’s no letter grades in Chicago. It’s pass or fail. You’d also never just let an inspector walk around with free reign.
I liked this show so much. Season 2 is where its at though 😄Cant wait for you to comment on that transition from season 1 to season 2, because maybe season 2 seems so much better because they did an amazing prep job in season 1. Thoughts ?

Joel McHale's character in this show is barely in this episode but he's Joffrey "Baratheon" levels of punchable the entire time he's on screen, at least to me. Constantly belittling your employees does not motivate them to do better.
