Filming The Office

Фильм және анимация

The more I watch The Office, the more I pick up on subtle dynamics between the camera and the characters: movement, framing, and of course looking at the camera. This is just a small fraction of the show's cinematography.

A few fun facts: - I've seen other characters glance at the camera during Talking Heads. Pam. Michael. Dwight. Even Creed. But most of the time, they talk to the producers. - Jim only really starts doing it around Season 2. I think it's an idea that evolved, the more they understood his character. - Even wilder is when Jim and Pam share Talking Heads, he'll look at the camera and she'll look at the producers. (More often than not, anyway.) Thanks for watching!

Another thing I’ve noticed, is that when characters do their talking heads in the conference room, Jim is the only one with his back facing outside. Everyone else’s back faces the office. That is until Pam starts dating Jim in season 4 and then she starts to face the same way as Jim.

Then with the others who are talking, they're talking to the producers, not "us" because they don't know that we're "in" on it. If that makes sense. A good example of this, alot of times is with dweight as well. Whenever he wants "us" in on whatever he's doing, he will look at the camera, or us, when he's out of the loop of the joke Jim is pulling, or doesn't understand what's really going on, he'll look at the producers.

Being a photographer/film maker myself and a passionate fan of The Office, I just wanted to say thank you for this video essay. It is an amazing breakdown of the cinematography and really neat to see how it evolved over the seasons. I appreciated how you talked about the characters at times putting on a front because the cameras are present. It effects how they behave and I have always believed that, certain characters were more aware than others of how they were being perceived and thus behaved differently than they would in real life. For instance, I have thought that Kevin, who appears to be at least somewhat competent in the first few seasons, becomes more and more ridiculous and less intelligent over time on purpose. This was because he knew he would get more screen time doing more ridiculous things and making more mistakes. In the end, he did get more screen time it cost him his job. In the same way, I think Andy goes off the rails, constantly breaking outside of his character, in the last 2 seasons, because he is trying to get his acting career going sees the documentary as his opportunity to lay the ground work for that. Thanks again for this awesome video!

This was super great! Even though I've seen the characters change what they were about to do countless times due to them realizing a camera was watching, I've only now realized the implication behind it -- how different would the storylines be if the characters had not have had the looming presence of the cameramen behind them? Would Jan said what she had wanted to Michael? Would Jim have sent the email to Pam? What else would they have done or wouldn't do without the crew there? Would that have lead their relationships on wildly different paths? It's fascinating to think about. Great video!

Wow ... this is an amazing video. As someone who only recently "discovered" and binge watched the office in the last couple years, I found myself enamored of how attached I was to the series. Your treatment on this nailed it for me. The camera work induces the audience into feeling like it's a character in the show. Participating in witnessing. The different styles of camera work incorporated were brilliantly executed. Thank you for making this video! So much more newfound appreciation of this series. This is coming from a filmmaker's perspective BTW

Thank you. That was one of the best Office “analysis” videos I’ve seen on KZread. I can just see how in other videos, the cut to the non existent cameras would be commented with “and now they cut to a camera that wasn’t there 5 seconds ago. Let’s watch it again. There is no camera in the passenger seat, and now it’s filming Dwight. Come on, get it straight” You did it so tastefully, just noting how it’s a feature and not a mistake.
