Their relationship struggles were the best thing about season 9 imo. The most heartwarming moments in The Office are the ones where Jim and Pam “fall for each other” (when Jim asks Pam out after the interview, when Jim proposes to Pam, when they get married). The DVD of Jim & Pam at the end of season 9 is a wonderful moment, and it’s made all the more wonderful by the tension built up throughout the season. Just my two cents though. season 8 and 9 turned most of the cast into shallow versions of what they used to be. jim and pam's fights are ridiculously out of character. I understand the counter point to that is that even the best couples have problems, especially in a scenario like Athlead. The problem for me is that I find it hard to believe that Pam not only doesn't already know Jim's ambitions, but also wants to keep him from going after them. granted they have 2 young kids to raise, but to Jim's point that's why he's pursuing Athlead. I just wish that they would have wrote Pam to finally become more ambitious and less scared to make changes like earlier seasons - before she had Jim at her side.

@@Ryan-qv9se I know :( It would have been refreshing for them to find a resolution/compromise so they had their happy stable life together and Jim had his actually successful dream job, with Pam being brave to make that life happen where it needed to. There's no reason that Dunder Mifflin is the only place to have a peaceful career and good life foundation (imagine, me, an Office fan saying that XD). And Jim being a dang better father and husband too, gosh dang! I totally agreed that they just seemed like shallower versions of themselves in this season. No shade to the writers, just fun to dissect!

Pam's engagement had gone on for years with a man who always put her last, sure she ended because of her feelings for Jim but that relationship was a train wreck before Jim showed up. Pam also just failed art school and even with Jim trying to support her through it gave up on her dreams because she wasn't sure about it. Then when Jim decided he wanted to follow his own dream Pam got in his way and tried to make him give up his dream for her which just isn't fair as Jim supported her throughout Art School. Honestly I found Pam to be the unlikable one in season 9 which might not be entirely her fault since she was saddled with the boom guy story but honestly her character seemed way more self absorbed than she used to be and even laughed off that she hadn't kept her word to Jim to record the recital, sure Jim's reaction might have been a bit nuts but Pam was the one who didn't come through and decided to laugh about it.

  • @jordan3135

@Dead Evermore Honestly, here's my opinion~ it seems to go back to Pam not making good life choices haha. By choosing to be with Roy and leaning into the self-pity of it all while consciously not choosing to find a better situation (and hurting Jim with her wishywashyness), and being stuck in life for a while there (which can be understandable), and pining over her dreams but resisting them when they're available to her.. Sets her up pretty horribly for smooth sailing. Even just her maturity of character. Then Jim, who's shown his indifference and subtle selfish impulsive behaviors even in this video~ Although every human has these weaknesses in some form, and can never truly mature from all bad behavior *completely*. Despite the merit to pursue the job he's motivated for, it just comes out in an exaggerated attitude for the show's buildup. I still will feel bad for Pam in season 9 when I rewatch it, because in the moment it's unfair to her how things come out, despite that it's fair for Jim to be encouraged to do what he loves (when he can do it in a way that's fair to the family he's started), although it's mainly become a problem because of their developed character flaws and poor management of the trial they faced as a family. (I will say it's sad that Pam was being a team player (to her best ability within reason) and a working mom but still doubted her value to her husband because his more recent behaviors had made her out to be not enough for him and his point of anger/disappointment.)

Andy comes from a WASP family where all the family members are basically strangers. His brother was a alcoholic and had no idea, so he went with his brother to sell the family yacht and get him sober on the trip back and forth. It was probably the first time someone in Andy's family didn't throw money at the situation and Erin's problem with it was he didn't bring her along. Erin was completely emotionally stunted and took as it some sort of insult because she's a orphan and has no concept of family leaning on each other. She literally looked at like he went to Disney land without her and started cheating on him as Andy was doing something for his brother that no one else in his family would do for him. That's my interpretation of it, but in reality it was lazy writers that figured they'd throw in some sensationalism and have Erin find new love for higher viewership at the time. The show started dropping downhill during season 5 and probably should've stopped at season 6 or 7.

The thing about life, more so in relationships is the concept of sacrifice. People sacrifice alot because they are no longer free to move in other directions. Pam lost her chance to be an artist for the sake of her reltionship, then her marriage and kids. Jim never had the ambition to try until that company. His entire career revolved around pam who said no twice. It’s really hard to choose a side and if you did then you have already lost. I appreciate this moment though. But it’s hard to see our favorite characters broken.

I'm torn. On one hand, regarding the recital, yes it was an incredibly simple task and she was a jerk for answering her phone in the middle of the recital (disruptive). I think she was subconsciously trying to punish him. Despite the reason for him missing it, I would have been irritated, too. However, she was also correct that Jim doing Athlead was for largely selfish reasons, despite what he claims and she was essentially a single parent. Yes, she did ultimately agree to it, but Jim forced her hand. But I also think Jim was right when he said if he waited for Pam to make decisions, things would never happen. She's so passive, it's infuriating. Buying the house without telling her wasn't cool, who cares if he made an art room in the garage? I don't think Jim or Pam is the "worst," I think they're human and they were put on pedestals by fans and the writers/showrunners for so long people forget that.

I actually think season 9 Pam was pretty consistent with her character throughout the series in terms of her being passive, letting things just happen to her, not taking charge, or wanting to take any risks. I like that Jim and Pam had conflict finally--but yes, it could have been done better. They could have sprinkled some conflict into their relationship from season 4 on and it wouldn't have seemed so jarring.
