    While it doesn’t show for all of the family, one thing I noticed is that Mirabel’s symbols on her clothes show appreciation for the beauty of her family’s gifts rather than a strict representation of what they are. Dolores’ clothes may have sound waves (noise), but Mirabel wears music. Julieta’s clothes are about herbs and healing, but Mirabel honors her with a warm meal.

    As a Spanish speaker, I can confirm that the word “casito” doesn’t exist when referring to a house. Casa is a feminine word, so the nickname “casita” is the only option you have to show that the house is either small and cute, or just to show love and affection towards it. So if the house really was the reincarnation of Pedro, the house would still be called “casita”. Just wanted to point that out.

    That thing about Antonio having a door with his image as a kid on it could also be because, since because of Alma, right after their gift cerimonies, the 5-year-olds receiving the powers were pushed so hard and pressured so much that they had to become adults. Playtime was over, they had to work for the community. Thanks to Mirabel, instead, Antonio's life was different and he got to still be a kid, that's why he had a different door. I think this could make sense too.

    I think Matt is just reading too much into it. The doors would, I assume, change throughout time with the kids, showing them as they grow up. If you look at 6:19 when the kids get their doors, we don't actually see the images on them when they are kids. As the camera pulls out, we do a time skip, showing the triplets grown up, and THAT is when we finally get an image on their doors. The same thing happens for the grandchildren. And that just makes sense from a film-making perspective; why would you pay the animators for all the extra man hours it would take to to show a different image on the door for what translates to a FRACTION of a second in the finished movie? It's just a cost-cutting technique of the type that animation does a lot.

    Just to clarify, the song "Dos oruguitas" actually talks about Abuela and Pedro as the song states "Dos oruguitas enamoradas" which translates to "two caterpillars in love with each other". With no door of her own with her face on it, she has no gift. It’s a huge stretch to assume that she has a gift(which is never mentioned or confirmed) without her having a door and a room of her own. The writers just messed up and wanted to really hammer home the feeling of “I’m not special when my family is” and should have simply given her a gift that is abstract and that she struggles to discover. Her having a “dud” gift would work much better for the resolution of the movie and would make her helping Bruno learn to use his gift for good be even more relevant.

  • @hossam9053

    @hossam9053

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@evanstephens2203 well technically no one said she has a magical gift like the rest of the family, just said she’s pretty much the new abuela. Abuela doesn’t have a gift either, but she protects and controls the casita, and so does mirabel, so pretty much I’d say mirabel didn’t get a gift so she would become the new successor, you can even see her standing in the middle infront of everyone else on the casita’s new door in the end of the movie, symbolizing that she’s the new protector

  • @lex.iii7
    @lex.iii7 Жыл бұрын

    Mirabel also symbolizes the new style of leading the future generations. Abuela symbolizes the old leadership, controlling, protective but very organized and responsible. This is also reflected on her role and image to the town. Mirabel, as the new leader of the house and the town, will change it. She’s more fun, better at accepting new ideas and possibilities, likes to spend time with the kids, but might not be reliable because she cares about what people feel more than their responsibilities. I think the movie also tried to show us the leadership style differences from the older generations to the newer ones.

    Actually it was mentioned in a post that casita can control the insides of rooms its just that bruno's room had fell into such a state because he stopped using his gift and so any magic in it was cut off from the rest of the house. The deleted scene seems to further support this because we are told after Bruno left his room got all "gross and creepy"

  • @NeoisiBunsterCh

    I think the same. Not much because Casita cant be controlled inside of the magical rooms, but because every Madrigal relies so much on the magic they inherited. You can see it when Luisa lost her gift she literally couldn't and wouldn't do anything, and when they tried to rescue the candle, Isabella and Camilo used their power to try to catch it (Not knowing what to do when they lost their powers in the middle of that act). But Mirabel's only magic she can rely on is the magic of casita. I feel is her way to feel part of the Madrigal family.

    I always had the idea that mirabel’s gift some how controles the others gifts and the house, basically she controlled the magic. My argument for this is that most of the significant things in the movie happen after something effects mirabel herself. First the house started to crack after they took a picture without mirabel in it, which could be mirabel starting to feel like she’s disconnected from her family. Secondly the gifts started going haywire after mirabel does something: Luisa told mirabel that she’s over worked and needs a break so mirabel may have thought that without a gift Luisa would be happier and that’s when Luisa’s gift starts to fade, after mirabel talked to her: another is when mirabel realized that Isabella wasn’t perfect during the fight and in realizing this Isabella makes a cactus (something that’s not perfect): and not to forget that the only time Bruno is known to have made a good Prophecy is when mirabel told him to (I know Isabella’s is good but she may have thought that she would be perfect forever because of abuela even if that’s not what Bruno meant). Finally I think that the house knew when the candle would fade and decided to transfer the magic into mirabel because of the doors; all of the doors show the ages of the people right as the house was gonna fall and the candle will burn out, the triplets in middle age, Luisa, dolores, and Isabella as young adults, Camilo as a teen, and we’ll I think you get my point. So yes I do believe mirabel’s gift is quite literally being the miracle itself but I also think she has the power to control it ( even if it’s subconsciously).

    I personally don't think that everyone's doors showed them as their "older self". That part of the movie was just showing a passing of time because you see abuela's kids grow in that sequence as well. I think the doors grow with the person. They're magical doors...it would make sense that the doors change with the appearance/age of the characters. EDIT: actually the art book said the door grows with the character so my "theory" was confirmed but I realized there was a scene that showed everyone took a picture with their door when they first received their gift as a child and the door was their adult self which doesn't align with what the art book says.

    If you look at the framed pictures on the wall, the kids are all about 5 years old, while their doors depict them as adults. So, do the doors' images in the photos change as they grow up, magically? If so, then all the doors start off with the kids' images, and the photo taken when printed, will change as the kids age. Hey, it's magic, anything is possible.

    no, I don't believe the designs on the doors change at all once they're made; you can find clearer images of each family member (excluding Antonio) standing beside the door when they receive their gift and their doors have always depicted them as adults, so the designs don't change over time. I just don't think any of the family members realized that Antonio's door was different in that way bc they were all worried whether he would receive a gift at all, and then they just never questioned it

    It's really sad that one member of the family just disappears and they don't search for him and refuse to talk about him. And he watches them thru the walls because he knows he will never belong. And then sing a whole song about him that he can probably hear and we see him in the background of. Poor Bruno was also always different because he was the only boy of the triplets and he got a weird room and then the family hates him. Poor Bruno!!! :(

    I don't know if this will make it better or worse, but in my experience (I'm Colombian, btw) family is everything, and the number one rule about family is that you can't turn your back to it. When Bruno disappeared it makes it seem from everyone else's perspective that he abandoned his family, that he turned their back to them. In our culture, this is unforgivable and it makes sense why they would refuse to talk about them. I don't think this is okay in any sense, and I understand it kind of seems backwards, but hopefully I was able to shed some light, maybe provide a different perspective?

    I know I'm very late. But my theory for the only reason Mirabel didn't get a gift was because at the time, Alma was already pressuring everyone and thinking more about the candle over everyone's mental health. So by the time it was Mirabels turn, she didn't get one because Alma wasn't as grateful for the candle. And I full on believe the only reason Antôñio got his gift was that Mirabel walked down the hall with him for his gift. Mirabel chose family and actually reminded what the miracle was about.

    Another detail I noticed was that Mirabel affected the gifts of her sisters: Luisa started losing her gift faster than everyone else did because Mirabel thought she was carrying too much after "Surface Pressure". But then during "What Else Can I Do?", when Mirabel is actively encouraging Isabela and hyping her up, Isabela's power grows so much that it extends all the way into town from Casita's rooftops. I really liked that detail!

    I interpreted this differently. I think that everyone's power is actually based on their confidence and their perception of power. Luisa's door and her strength differed based on her level of confidence, Camilo's shape-shifting was more or less in control based on his feelings of control and certainty of others, and Isabella's control of plants was restricted as she restricted her assertiveness. But this just goes to show that we all have our own interpretations of the movie and that may be the point. I think that the magic is better because we don't have a full understanding of it.

    I’ve always thought this!! Especially considering how her door disappeared. It almost seems like it fades INTO Casita. Like it becomes one with it, symbolizing that her gift has something to do with her connection to the house and therefore, the magic. This is only proven more when, at the end of the movie, she puts the doorknob in, and indirectly gets a door. Her “room” is the house, because her gift is directly connected to Casita. Not to mention the details on the front door (which would have details about said door owner’s gift) now have all of the family members on it, in fairness, it could be interpreted as just who lives in the house, but I think it could be to do with the fact that Mirabel’s gift is the guardian for the miracle itself.

    Also: Did anyone notice how the gifts reflected Alma's needs? I think casita chose the gifts for the family member based on what Alma needs at the time. Her children got the gifts of weather manipulation, clairvoyance and healing, because at the time Alma had lost her husband and her home. So casita gave Pepa weather powers to help grow food for the community, Julietta got healing so that Alma would never lose someone again, and Bruno got the power of foresight to warn them of any dangers. In the next generation most gifts seems to be flashier than their mothers. Dolores helps Alma get information about the village just like she does in the movie. Camillo and Louisa's gifts are to remind the village how powerful and helpful they are. While Isabella perfect candidate for the Madrigals to gain more influence in the village just like mentioned in the movie. When Mirabel received her 'gift' as the next keeper, that was because that was the only thing missing at the time to sure the legacy of the Madrigals. When Mirabel didn't receive any powers, Alma was so desperate that all she needed was a gift for Antonio. Literally any gift would do, so casita gave him something within his interest, animals.

    Adding onto this! While I loved the first part (Pepa’s weather conditioning for crops, Bruno’s foresight for danger, Juliettas healing capabilities), those were all gifts that are connected with themes of immediate survival. Their children’s gifts should, then, make and shape the community: Isabellas (plant) ability to make the grounds actually fertile, Lousia’s building gift, I’m not sure for Dolores but perhaps an add on to Bruno’s absence for looking out for danger (but you can tell the gifts get less focused on survival, she can’t see the freakin future, she just has painful ears D: ) (also Dolores was the only one who knew Bruno was in the house, so she has that odd connection to him) Camillo’s shapeshifting to either mark change/ or just representing the people in their community, and Antonio to represent the animals. So basically: The first generation was with immediate survival, the second to cultivate their community and make it thrive. It’s Mirabel’s job to take the mantle from Abuela for the generations coming afterwards :)

Therefore instead of transferring the magic from the candle to the doorknob like every other member of the family, she transferred the magic from the candle to herself! My theory was a little simpler, the family misinterpreted what happened on her first day, I believe she got a gift when she touched her door, it's a passive skill that manifested, she gained the power to take the gift if the family was no longer worthy of it and the manifestation was her literally taking her door away. The gift manifested because of the love and desire to protect the family so the gift was testing the family. The more Mirabel was cut out of the family for not being special, the more the wish was consumed by her, that's why the weakness of the wish was so intense at the newest members awakening, when they didn't include her in the picture(that's the reason they put so much work into that scene). This kept escalating till the wish was completely consumed by Mirabel and was only released after abuela realized the error of her ways. Only once the focus was on the members of the family and not what they could do, were they worthy of the miracle again

    Love the theory, as always! But one minor correction; casita is feminine because casa is feminine. "Casito" would be something completely different (little case), from "caso". In Spanish, you refer to the gender of the object, rather than implied human gender. For instance, "mi amor" or "el amor de mi vida" is masculine, but can be used just as easily to refer to a female. It would never be *la amor de mi vida, so it similarly would never be *el casita, even if the theory of the casita being the soul of the abuelo were true.

In English, the best equivalent we have is actually something we use in Ireland (where I'm from); "wee" (because the Irish language also has -ín as a suffix for diminutive, like Spanish does, so we are kind of translating from Irish when we do this), which is a completely separate concept to "small", even if often wee things do often tend to be small. So, if Encanto took place in Ireland instead of Colombia, la casita would be "the wee house" 💪😁.

Literally speaking, Casita would just mean small house, but we usually use it to either refer to a dollhouse or to refer to it being cute. Many times when we add to words ito/ita (like in Cas-ita) it's just to refer to something on a cutely manner. So yeah, this point honestly doesn't really matter.

The cracks also only start appearing when Mirabel “doesn’t get a gift” and Bruno leaves, because Bruno repairs those cracks that appear because Mirabel is one with Casita. Correction about the “Casita” and “Casito” thing: Normally when we put an “ito” or “ita” at the end of a word, it’s a way to make it diminutive, a way to make it sound cuter, smaller and/or **more loving**, and the *a* or *o* at the end makes a huge difference and can turn a word into a completely different word. “Casita” makes sense, regardless the spirit that supposedly would posses it being masculine or feminine, and of course it’s a loving way to say house. In the other hand, we have “casito” which isn’t the masculine for house, because that’s not hot it works for us in Spanish. “Casito” would instead mean “almost” in a cute or diminutive manner, as explained earlier, and people mostly use it with kids in a more loving way. That’s why, amigos, it’s so important to watch out for feminine or masculine words in Spanish, because it changes a lot.

  • @_Onlime
    @_Onlime2 жыл бұрын

    Just to clarify, it's called "casita" because words in spanish have genders asigned to them. Even it the house did have the spirit of the grandad, they would still use a female word to describe their household. Still all your other arguments were spot on, really enjoyed this theory.

    each one of their powers actually comes from what they held in their heart as a child. its said that Antonio had a soft spot and fascination with animals. abuela had a devotion for family. its seems the magic just amplify what they hold dear. since mirabel held her family so dear as we saw in the beginning her gift was for her family. she didnt need a door, the entire home is her room. we see each person get her room but in the end we see mirabels door at the end. her door is the front door of the house. we were so caught up what each room within a home made be but we forget the best one, the front door which protects the family and welcomes them. to be honest it be funny her power is the power of heart songs where she hears people thoughts like a musical like zoey extraordinary playlist and she didnt notice.

    And also at the end of the movie Mirabel does get a door: the front door to the house. Each person's door is the entrance to "their realm" whether that be the jungle room, the flower room, or whatever. So it makes perfect sense that, even though Mirabel's door comes later (quite possibly the house wasn't ready to officially pass the reigns off to her when she was younger) her door is the door to the house: her realm is the house and she's the one who keeps it all together. Idk. Just my two thoughts.

    If you think about it, every gift the Madrigals have is useful if they were invaded or attacked again. Louisa's strength and durability is a powerful defensive and offensive force. Isabella's and Antonio's phytokinesis and thiriokinesis respectively are an immense resource in a villiage surrounded by jungle. Dolores' super hearing and Bruno's prophecies can be used as a warning of the attack. Juilieta's healing can be used for anyone who's injured. Camillo's shapeshifting can be used to trick and manipulate the attackers. And Peppa's Empathic-Atmokinesis will make it harder for the inteuders to attack, creating freak weather patterns aimed at the enemies. Even Casita herself is a house that can defend itself and overlooks the rest of the villiage, making it an ideal haven in times of danger. The miracle wasn't just to protect them, but to arm them so they could protect themselves.

    I didn't watch encanto but I did see some clips of it. I feel as though it's a power struggle between Mirabel and Abuela. When Mirabel talks to the house, the house does as she "commands". The moment abuela says something, the house listens to abuela and not Mirabel anymore.

    I absolutely love all this evidence MatPat put together, but why didn't he mention one of the biggest clues for this theory? Using it only as background image? The new door for Casita is the entire family with Mirabel straight in the middle, really standing out for how big her depiction is. We DO see Mirabel getting a room and here's why: each room is magically designed to a Madrigal's taste and powers; since Mirabel's power is keeping the family together, the entire house is her room because that's where her family is. Her family is her room, and essentially everyone in the village built Mirabel's room since she didn't get one.

    Fresh take: the magic isn't in the doors, it's in the door handles. The conductor plays no instrument ( Mirabel has no gift) but is nonetheless essential for the well rounded ensemble of a family or choire

    there's a detail you've forgot to mention that supports this theory too, Every Madrigal gets a room that is designed to give them a space in which they can let their gifts grow, Isabella gets a room full of flowers, Bruno has a tower full of sand, which he needs for his gift, and Antonio gets a room fit for a lot of animal roommates. We've seen from the scene in which Mirabel is in Bruno's room that casita can't interact with the magical rooms. (You could argue that this is because the door no longer glows however the rest of the magic making the room possible still works so I doubt that that's the case) So Mirabel actually lives in the one room Casita, the embodiment/physical manifestation of the Miracle, can interact with. This could be seen to imply that Mirabel's gift is Casita or in other words, the gift itself.

    Precisely, Abuela's dress has mountains. I thought it was obvious that Abuela's gift was the mountains that protected the small town of Encanto from the outside world. Hence why when everyone lost their powers the mountains split. Since her gift no longer worked.

    Oh right! That does make a lot of sense 😮! And thus when the magic went away the mountains split apart 🤔. I guess at that point the war that drove everyone away is probably over by now (hopefully). So now people can venture outside the village and beyond if they want to 🤷.

    Actually, I think “Dos oruguitas” is about Pedro and Alma, as someone mentioned, but also, this song is about growth. About learning to come apart but also growing and moving forward. This correlates to the fact that Alma “held on too tight, so afraid she’d lose everyone too.” Which is why it plays in the moment Alma lost Pedro and at the end, where she learns to not hold onto the past. I still agree Mirabel’s gift is keeping the family together, but I just wanted to point it out since the Spanish lyrics convey this :]

    The first verse is definitely all about Pedro and Alma but the second verse that plays after we see Pedro’s sacrifice seems to be about Mirable and Alma. It begins with, “Dos Oruguitas, cocooned and waiting, each in their own world, anticipating what happens after the rearranging.” This doesn’t sound like Pedro and Alma, if it was why would they be in their own worlds? Instead it’s more likely referring to Mirabel and Alma with their different views of the family(own worlds) and how they are both holding on too their own pasts (the cocoon).

    The FIRST HALF of the song talks about abuela Alma and abuelo Pedro being the caterpillars HOWEVER the SECOND HALF of the song is about Abuela and mirabelle, the switch happens in this line: Two "disoriented" caterpillars In two cocoons, well sheltered With new dreams All you have to do is what is necessary The first half describes the caterpillars being "little" while the second being "disoriented". Both Alma and Mirabelle are disoriented, both of them were suffering all alone, abuela was alone loosing pedro and mirabelle was all alone never having a gift. The FIRST HALF of the song is about abuela alma reminiscing about her relationship with pedro, there was a line in the first half of the song that translates to "two caterpillars in love with each other" HOWEVER the second half of the song is no longer about pedro but mirabelle since the focus of the SECOND HALF of the song was no longer about abuela reminiscing about pedro BUT mirabelle RECONCILING with abuela alma The Second half is about Mirabelle CHANGING with Abuela Alma. To change from "disoriented" caterpillars into butterflies.

  • @-B4sh-

    @-B4sh-

    the lyrics is all about the TWO caterpillars BECOMING butterflies. Pedro is no longer there to become that butterfly MIRABELLE is clearly the caterpillar that is being referenced in the second half of the song because i dont know if youve noticed but after Mirabelle reconciles with Abuela THE SONG CONTINUES and instead of "ay oruguitas" it becomes "ay MARIPOSAS" butterflies. The fact that we change from caterpillar to butterfly AFTER MIRABELLE RECONCILES WITH ABUELA is literally the movie telling that BOTH Abuela and Mirabelle changed. TWO CATERPILLARS CHANGING TO BECOME BUTTERFLIES thats what the song is about and pedro is no longer there to be one of that caterpillar. The song isnt just about Alma and Pedro BUT ALSO Abuela Alma and Mirabelle.

    Love this theory. I figured her gift would be to inherit the status of the family matriarch. Something else that supports this theory is in Bruno's vision it shows the house broken and fixed. They assumed that she could choose, but by the end of the movie. She has done both. Destroying the old home and creating a new one foundation and all. And the family giving her the doorknob is proof that they accept her position as leader of the household.

    I feel like the biggest clue that points to miracle having a power is quite literally how the house falls apart when she’s stressed. There’s a theory that said Mirabel could either dampen or strengthen powers. Like how she made Luisa weaker and Isabella got stronger. At the climax of the movie casita breaks apart, but we see it actively break the angrier she got.

    I usually like all your theories but I believe you are way off with this one. I had this theory as a bit of a stretch but made sense to me back when I first watched the movie. The source of all the magic is the grandfather Pedro. The theory states that he has the gift of magic and so the soldiers were actually looking for him, so he made the ultimate sacrifice to protect his family. His magic went into the candle with his last thought of keeping his family safe. This made the Encanto and gave his family his different powers. Which all relied on the candle, where his magic was stored for them to work. Now the reason why Mirabel didn't get any powers is because she didn't need them, the candle saw that she didn't need the protection of a gift. Because like his grandfather, she has magic. The grandmother demanded a lot from her family which over time made the family "unsafe" due to the protection imbued in the candle being not only from physical danger but mental as well. So the magic starts failing. Towards the end of the movie the candle loses its power completely and so everyone is without their gifts. After the touching moment between Mirabel and the Grandma, once can see the magic moving around them. But it is in fact the magic coming from Mirabel, having finally been accepted by her grandma for who she is. When they rebuild the house and Mirabel puts in the doorknob, she unkowingly becomes the source of the magic. Taking her Grandpa's place as the "source". I believe that if a second movie is made, it would be about a brother from the grandpa, who sensed Mirabel's magic awaken and teaches her how to use her gifts. BUT HEY THAT'S JUST A THEORY A FIIIILM THEORY!

  • @leahjohnson8612

    When looking through the lens of the theory, the Casita chose Mirabel not to have powers to teach a lesson to Abuela Alma, as she was becoming too focused on maintaining the miracle and not on how she was treating her family

    My theory is Mirabel kind of WAS the miracle. Things started to go wrong when she started to give up hope on getting a miracle. It started getting better when she started to feel more like family. It completely went out when she felt cast out. It came back when she was finally accepted. It makes it seem to me like her emotions were controlling the miracle.

    Theory: Mirabel didn’t get a gift, because if you look back at the scene where she was a child and failed at the gift ceremony, you can see that right after she touches the magic candle, she RUBS OFF THE MAGIC DUST onto her dress, therefore when she touched the door, there was no magical room.

    Another detail about the butterflies: butterflies, in many hispanic cultures, symbolize family--more specifically, family that has passed on "visiting" their relatives who are still alive. This is super important to Abuela Alma's character because butterflies represent the presence of Abuelo Pedro in her life still, which is the true source of her family devotion.

    As a Latino, with all due respect, hearing Matpat talk Spanish just felt weird 😂😂😂 Couple of things: “casita” is feminine because in Spanish we have gendered words. There is no “casito” it’s just that “casa” is home and “casita” is the equivalent of “small home” we often take things and use diminutive terms as a form on endearment. Stuff like “Carro = Carrito” “nevera = neverita” and stuff like that
