Hey, loyal Theorists, did you see Dune or Dune: Part 2? We here at Theorist absolutely LOVED it. In fact, we’re all on board to support the Lisan al Gaib. But while watching the movie, we had one major question. No, it wasn’t how on Arrakis all of those Fremen got on and off the sand worms. It was about if the stillsuits would actually work in real life. Could Paul, Chani, and Stilgar survive those brutal deserts? Could they actually get water? Or would they become so disgustingly STINKY from their own b-o? Grab your Crysknife and let’s find out!

Actually, people who live in the desert wear skin tight clothes and bandages. It stops them from losing a lot water and isolate them from the heat and sun. The flowing clothes goes on top of the first layers to protect from wind, sun and sand.

It’s honestly remarkable how accurate some of the stuff Herbert wrote was even though that was so long ago. Shows he was either an absolute genius ahead of his time, spent ages doing research on the little they could know back then, or some combination of both. Either way, incredibly impressive how well the source material continues to hold up 60ish years later!

Hello everyone, your friendly neighborhood Bait Police officer here to remind you not to reply to bots under comments. Replying to them makes KZread think that they’re real people. Things to do if you see a bot reply: 1. Do NOT reply! I know it might be tempting to clap back as these bots tend to slander our favorite creators, like Lee here, but replying to them will fool the KZread algorithm into thinking that they’re real people. 2. Report the comment either for “Unwanted commercial content or spam”, or for “Harassment and bullying.” 3. Block the account by going to their channel, first pressing the “Report” button to report the channel and then clicking “Hide this user from my channel” so that pesky bot account can’t reply to your comments anymore. Safe commenting, friends -Officer Miguel O’Hara of the Bait Police

I would love to see this channel tackle the idea of the Mentats and is it possible for them to exist in the future. For those that haven't read the books, Mentats are humans that had been trained up to be basically living computers (the Galaxy had gotten way anti-AI since long before Dune started), being able to mentally take in huge amount of data and drawn upon them to form very solid conclusions about event, even being able to somewhat predict the near future.

Thermal energy needs a thermal difference to work. In other words, you need to heat something up, which then needs to be cooled down. On a super hot desert planet, it wouldn't really be efficient, especialy on a small, portable scale. Solar though.... having flexible lightweight solar panels on the suit, or easily transportable to be used as recharge points, sounds easily feasible. Heck, a solar panel umbrella. Provides shades and power

I have an idea - the body has a cooling system that requires energy from the motion of the muscles breathing, so that when they aren't breathing as much, the suit doesn't need to cool as much, and when they are breathing a lot, there is more energy which means more cooling.

actually we need calculations on how much power would be needed to run the cooling and filtration systems in the suit, then how much movement would be necessary to generate enough electricity for all of that. keep in mind that the more you move, the more cooling you need. I think the power required would be way more than we could collect from our kinetic energy of movements

A few years ago, I had the pleasure of picking up a full omnibus edition of the Dune series from a free book pile, and read it. I had watched the 80s movie adaptation of Dune several times as a kid, and between that movie, Tremors, and Beetle Juice, I was TERRIFIED of sand (thanks, 80s films, for making certain that my childhood had a healthy dose of trauma). As a child, I didn't understand the complex story undercurrents in the film, and I didn't know that the film only covered the first book in a series. All I knew was cool, fictional setting, and sand worms. Reading the books was like demystifying an enigma that had followed me around in only the vaguest of memories for my entire life. Suddenly, everything made sense, and now that it made sense, I could truly appreciate it. It was fun walking through this exploration of a world that I've been moderately familiar with nearly my entire life with you. Dune has a lot of great, fictional technology to explore, but by far the suits are the most iconic and important to the story as a whole, so I'm glad we were able to explore it together.

The heat exchanger still needs to be hotter than the ambient. To remove that heat it may need a radiator or an open air evaporative fluid, or maybe just a section insulated from the person that gets very very hot at a small point and uses blackbody radiation. Alcohol or pressurized air saved from movement energy could flow over it and vent it away. Another energy source would be thermal. While during the day the heat is ever present so there isn't much gradient for a peltier type energy source, however since the dessert nights get much colder a material capable of holding onto that thermal energy (specifically the gradient, hot or cold) from the night or day prior and switching the polarity to generate energy from either stored heat or ambient heat. Although this would not last an entire day. Perhaps the heat exchanger can dump a certain amount of thermal energy into a storage system and recycle it for times more energy intensive cooling is required. When in cold dark place, less cooling needed, excess used to cool thermal battery while stored heat is used as temporary gradient for power source. When in very hot place, stored cold gradient is used to supplement the cooling system, the heat exchanger dumps a certain amount of heat into the atmosphere but stores a percentage of it in a thermal battery as a later power source.

Dune 2 was fantastic, its deviations from the Herbert text mostly very well crafted, and the visuals spectacular. I only wish they had put ten minutes of dialog into explaining some of the montage jumps and tech, because my family new to Dune were left clueless on some very important parts. They did a great job with the water of life, but the shield dynamics for example, completely baffling without a solid background. Also, the guild should have made an appearance, and although I understand why they were essentially omitted, their pressure is just so essential to understanding the imperium and houses' motivations.
