I'm so glad that the Fil-Am Student Association at different Universities in the whole U.S.A are proudly loving and embracing their Pilipino roots, heritage and culture. I know that here in California Pilipino Student Association within the UC system are also engage in cultural presentation and friendly competition.

Am so proud of ALL the participants and especially to the students from Illinois University who won in that Bamboo Competition and to a great performance as well by Chicago University Students. Awesome performances. But on top of it ALL, they are all winners and did an outstanding and powerful performances. Though it's only in the last part that I saw their facial expressions. Ultimately, they are amazing Fil-Am Students and am proud and thankful that they display and showed Filipino culture especially the tribal communities their dance and the traditional war dance. Basta thank you very much for this Beautiful and incredibly heartwarming performance. Thank you very much!

University of Chicago killed it.. I mean the synchronizations of hands, gestures, feet, and props was presented really well.. And what I love the most is, University of Chicago ends the performance very strong.. Well done both universities..

Confusing, but beautiful. Sounds from the south, with northern aesthetics, and the concept of female warriors of the central Philippines. A disclaimer could have been nice. It took me a while to appreciate the performance for what it actually is, an amalgamation of a lot of the Filipino cultures and taking a lot of creative freedom in the conceptualization and choreography.

Igorot dance have their own version of a metal percussion that looks like an oversized version of the South hence the similarity in the sound. The beat is also similar which is very common in different tribal community. Mind you the beat and the percussions is also quite similar to the North American Indians.

I love your channel featuring performances of Filipino choirs and dances on the international stage. It is wonderful that they are shared here online because they are rarely seen. Certainly a source of Filipino pride. Just a little tweaking though is needed for the title of this specific post. It should be 'Loyola University of Chicago' and not 'U Chicago.' 'U Chicago' refers to The University of Chicago. Loyola University of Chicago and The University of Chicago are different universities. To be precise, the competitors were University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (there are two other University of Illinois campuses besides Urbana-Champaign) vs. Loyola University of Chicago. Sorry, I didn't mean to be picky. :-) I just happen to be familiar with these three universities. Please continue posting content like this!!

According to their FB page, Battle of the Bamboo is a cultural dance competition showcasing traditional Filipino folk dance. With the amount of liberties these students take, it should be called a cultural dance fusion competition showcasing inspired bits and pieces from traditional kinda Filipino sorta folk dance.That way, at least it would be clear and no one would get offended.

I think it inevitable that Filipino Americans will start making their own twist to Filipino dances. They might all together cast off the colonial dances as to them it’s more like Mexican or Central American rather than truly Filipino. Only time will tell.

@@tatumergo3931 When the broader society (America) keeps telling you you’re Asian and then you dance colonial dances, you feel like a copy cat. And because Fil-Ams have very little hint of colonial mentality, they tend to seek out the more “authentic” Filipino roots. I think this is shown by the popularity of Ifugao tattooing among them. There are societies (clubs) that promote these tattoos aligning themselves with Polynesians and building connections with these communities. Filipinos in the Philippines probably don’t understand these connections as well as they don’t Interact with Polynesians as much.

Their dances are inspired in the Philippines. They can use moro moro dance as a fight dance
I think it inevitable that Filipino Americans will start making their own twist to Filipino dances. They might all together cast off the colonial dances as to them it’s more like Mexican or Central American rather than truly Filipino. Only time will tell.

@@tatumergo3931 When the broader society (America) keeps telling you you’re Asian and then you dance colonial dances, you feel like a copy cat. And because Fil-Ams have very little hint of colonial mentality, they tend to seek out the more “authentic” Filipino roots. I think this is shown by the popularity of Ifugao tattooing among them. There are societies (clubs) that promote these tattoos aligning themselves with Polynesians and building connections with these communities. Filipinos in the Philippines probably don’t understand these connections as well as they don’t Interact with Polynesians as much.

That sound, the first one, it's like the dipdipu of the Ifugaos. Cordillera Administrative Region.
It reminds me of our recital night and day. We have to dance 20 ethnic group ritual for 8 hours it was a torture.
