Ойын-сауық

Battle of Filipino Folk Song, New Zealand Choir:
1. Takapuna Grammar School Chorale (Auckland) 2019
2. Macleans College Choir 2015
3. Takapuna Grammar School Chorale (Auckland) 2023 Directed by Keani Taruia-Pora perform at the Gala Concert of The Big Sing 2023, Auckland Town Hall, 27 August 2023.
Choir 1. PARU PARONG BUKID: Felipe de León (Composer) George Hernandez (Arranger):
Paru-parong Bukid is a humorous song about comparing a Filipino lady in her glamorous formal gown with tall butterfly sleeves to that of a field butterfly, like a capricious woman who walks around to attract attention.
Paru-Parong bukid is a traditional "Kutang-Kutang" Filipino folk song which originated from "Mariposa Bella", a Filipino song in Spanish originated in the 1890s.The song "Mariposa Bella" was composed during the time of American invasion of the Philippines.
In 1938, "Mariposa Bella" was totally forgotten when "Paru-Parong Bukid" was released as a soundtrack of a film of the same title. The Tagalog rendition was composed by Felipe de León
Choir 2. ROSAS PANDAN Minggoy Lopez (Composer) George Hernandez (Arranger):
Rosas Pandan, tells the story of a pretty lass from the mountains who charms everyone when she sings and dances during a town festival.
Composed by Minggoy Lopez, this Visayan folk song has been performed by numerous choirs all over the world including choirs from China, Korea, Indonesia, Russia, Singapore and USA.
Choir 3. AY, AY, AY O PAG-IBIG, Nitoy Gonzalez (Lyrics) George Hernandez (Arranger):
George G. Hernandez is the founder, artistic director and conductor of the Saringhimig Singers in the San Francisco bay area. His choir has won top prizes and prestigious awards at numerous International competitions. His vision is to promote unity and understanding among people through the beauty of music. Mr. Hernandez studied choral conducting, composition, and piano from the University of the Philippines. He later also studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for his degree in Voice Performance. He has sung with San Francisco Opera Chorus for several years. He also sung roles as a bass-baritone for other opera companies in the San Francisco bay area and other regions of California. You're a choir and you wanna impress the world or win a global choral competition? Perform Filipino folk or classic contemporary songs.. The beautiful melody and its colorful SATB harmony arrangements are musically dramatic and full of dynamics and texture. That is for sure!

The Pilipino local folk songs have an inherently gymnastic of voices , its rhythm symbolizes Filipino struggles in life, and the music melodies ooze the native's temperament.

Am having goose bumps while watching these foreign chorale groups sing my own native Tagalog and Visayas song. Their pronunciation, the melody is perfect. My only suggestion is for everyone to SMILE more while singing these songs. These are happy songs, depicting the basic/simple everyday native Filipino lives about love, courtship, respect for one another, helping each other during harvest time...just to give foreigners an idea of what these songs are all about. Overall, the performances are superb! You all give justice to our songs. Very well executed!

I can almost visualize the fluttering of wings from butterflies and dragon flies I loved to watch in my earlier years. In my first job, I was assigned to the island of Cebu in the late 70s.I cannot remember the town but will never forget a particular experience when our trip along a hillside or a mountain side was halted when the light was literally blocked by thousands if not millions of butterflies that appeared out of nowhere!

I was a choir member way back in high school and joined several competitions. We learned English, Italian, Spanish, and other foreign songs. However, I personally thought that Tagalog and Cebuano/Bisaya folk songs were just the best! I just thought it was because we speak and understand both Filipino languages - but actually the arrangement, the style, the over musicality are fun and sometimes funny too!

Hence, when a group sings it well regardless of their nationality are most likely to win. Our songs, when groups from different countries sing it and they win, bring us pride too.

Amazing! I've watched George Hernandez choir videos at a US university as part of his PhD in music. I'm just wondering how long foreigners can learn this song up to competition level. I've been a choir member myself, though I did learn that when you're in your teens, it was easier to sing songs in a foreign language.
