The disadvantage of dark wood is that it doesn't stain well. With a lighter color you can use stains to change the color or darkness to emulate different woods.
I've only been looking into 3D printing in the past week or 2 and I'm really enjoying your concise videos.
That looks amazing, nice review. Really great to see the material selection expand.

Looks good, and nice tips on the settings there. And i have to say that I find the way you guys collaborate across the channels is awesome(should likely put this in the meshmixer video but....)
That wooden Bender is *Obsoletely Fabulous*...
hi, im new to 3d printing and woukd like to try wood filament. im using a wanhao i3 with microswiss all metal hotend . what i dont understand is why did it print the vase ok, but then failed on the first bender? thanks
Hey I tried printing with this exact filament in my Monoprice maker select V2 and I instantly got a jam I had my hot end at 215 degrees and as soon as I loaded it and tried to extrude some plastic it wouldn't even come out please help thanks
can I ask where you go the fan next to the extruder at 1:31, my DIY printer has a fan but not directed to the extruder rather than the motor for some reason, if it wasn't brought separately, is there a place I can get one?
because im new to printing (3-4 months) I tried printing a woodfill flament from my maker box for variation. Although, it got 1/4 of the way through and clogged the nozzle and now i am \very scared when printing anymore from it
awesome! the colour seems very similar to the Colorfabb's corkfill, I have a roll ready to be used but I'm a little afraid to use it since I haven't found any reviews of it or some tips and tricks, do you have any experience with this?
Are you able to create a grain effect by varying the extrusion temp
Can you please share more detail of the setting such as nozzle size, printing speed, retraction, printing temp, layer height?
Great review man. keep up the fantastic work
Hi Angus, I tried this filament on my Prusa i3 Mk2 with 70mm/s speed in S3D and I got extruder jamming... What size nozzle are you using in this review? Mine is 0.4mm.
Any idea if it's hit the USA market yet? I did some googling and can't find it here.
Wow. Really like the look of those prints.
print fast and increase retraction by 1mm. No more holes. Worked for me with identical problem on cheap pla.
Hi. Can someone tell how to 3D print "Esun Wood PLA filament? I failed several times after trying different settings. The 3D printer I have has a Bowden extruder and I use simplify3D. Esun Wood filament details below. Density: 0.70 g/cubic. cm Melt flow index: 17 (190 deg. Celsius / 2.16 kg) Tensile strength: / Elongation at break % : / Flexural strength : / Flexural modulus : / IZOD impact strength : / Any suggestions, slicer settings, etc. Please let me know.
nice!! I have been waiting on a review of this material!:)
What nozzle size did you use?
Angus keep up the good work, must say I enjoy your Chanel the most in the 3d printing category. Greetings from South Africa

+Maker's Muse I'm waiting on my wanhao i3 v2. I think it's safe to say it's the best 3d printer money can buy, what do you think? Maybe you could do a mods and user experience video later on, would be awesome.
What slicer program do you use ??

How about the nozzle and the abrasiveness of the filament?
Cool! Loving the Egyptian cat! (I'm Egyptian, haha). I wish these filaments worked in a stock Up Mini... Too risky to try though.
Fantastic!! How was the layer height? 0,05mm? Thanks a looottt
If you want to explore your 'artsy' side a little more, can you see how well it takes stains?

they should vary the colour along the filament to create grain
Do you think it would work on a UPBOX?
How much does the wood PLA filament cost in Australia? Much more than classic plastic PLA?
if you "dry brush" the surface with a little metallic or chrome paint, you can get a really near rust look on that bender head
Does it still smell hours, days or weeks later?
noob question...how long does it last that one 'ball' of WOOD PLA material ...For example how % did you spent in creating the Bender head
Yeah I love wood filament and this looks beautiful. I'll have to buy some of that filamentive stuff. It will make a great lightsaber hilt color ;)
Wood you recommend this filament?
Thanks for the Wood review...:)
would it take linseed oil?
Love the review, prints look amazing. Im still new to 3d printing, so new infact i still have a week before i pick up my first printer (cocoon create); i have just recently subscribed to your channel and have learned alot from your tutorials so far. I would like to know if you have used ninjaflex or equivalent filament? if not would i love to see a review on it. keep up the good work

Disappointed you didn't go into the settings side more. I've got this exact filament and I've had a nightmare with it trying to get a half decent print.
Whats your favorite PLA to use?
One thing to test with wood filaments is trying variations on the temperature. The clearer ones specially. Bamboo fill, for instance. You can get different colors by printing at different temperatures.
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+JJ CC I wouldn't mind trying Bamboo fill, but yeah normally you get darker colours by printing hotter - but tbh all the previous brands I tried clogged my 0.4mm nozzles. I settled on 215deg for this wood-pla.
@jjcc8379
8 жыл бұрын
+Maker's Muse yep, clogging is an issue with "fill" filaments. 0.4mm nozzle feels like the bare minimum, it won't tolerate lower temps as well as big nozzles (thinking 0.6 ~ 0.8 mm ). It doesn't seem much of a problem to "have" to use big nozzles in this case if you use wood or bamboo like ... you might wanna print big, beautiful scuptures/objects . I said bamboo because if it's clearer (in the reel). Then you may "burn" it at your will (and printer capabiltiies). Nice video and prints! Again, so jealous you have the cocoon down there!
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+JJ CC Haha I should get some 0.8mm nozzles and have at the other brands then! I'm having a blast with the Cocoon Create... though I just blocked the nozzle trying to reprint with some old metallic PLA. Got to get some more 0.4mm drill bits to clear it out.
@ProtonOne11
8 жыл бұрын
+JJ CC Someone needs to make a plugin for the slicer that allows some kind of random temperature changes (controlled by a few parameters, like min/max temp, deviation rates, number of layers at same temperature...) so you could get some kind of wood grain printed almost automatically. You can do it manually in S3D with a lot of processes in one print, but its a lot of work to set it all up.
@MONTY-YTNOM
8 жыл бұрын
You don't need processes to do that, you can do it in the heat settings in S3D
Hey Makers Muse I was wondering if you could give the link to your wood fil settings?
@williamleitz3551

To download
You should really upgrade the cooling fan on your Wanhao, it virtually eliminated stringing issues for me.
Is it waterproof?
So... Can you sand and stain such material? Like real wood?
You may discover post processing with a smooth filler ...or resin
Can you paint varnish on that material to make it shiny?
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+TechWizPC sure can! you can treat it like regular wood.
Hey Angus. I know you're a fan of Onshape, but if you wanted to move your models to an offline piece of software (e.g. SolidWorks), do you lose all of the parametrics? I don't have SW, so I can't check.
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+Malcolm Hunter Unfortunately the parametrics do not translate across, though you can use feature recognition within SW to try and reclaim some control - seems to work fairly well.
You should try doing the Cat Goddess in black, as she should be. I think you will love her.
That looks like a very good quality filament. I am defenatly going to check out their filament. The last few seconds of the video are the best. Lol

+Panoreth 3D Printing Haha.... it was very late :P
4:43 Angus, don't you mean "cat-22"? :D
they should vary the colour to give a more grain like effect
This is where a 3D pen comes in handy, you can easily fill in those mistakes and than just sand them down.
DId you use a heat gun to get rid of the excess supports?
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+dragnet53 Heatgun to remove the white marks caused by removing supports, works rather well!
Question, what happens if you print at a lower temperature? I'd imagine that if it softens earlier, then it reaches the glass point earlier as well, and that may help your extruder contain the transition zone to a shorter distance. Thoughts?
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+goeland86 Maybe, I was printing at 215 C which seems like a good sweet spot for my machine. Lower temps mean higher back pressure - so possibly more chance of jams that way, but yeah could do with more experimenting!
@goeland86
8 жыл бұрын
+Maker's Muse I found that most PLAs for me (and I run an E3D lite6 on a kossel mini) print very well at 205C, and I only start getting serious backpressure when I drop to around 185-190. I'm only wondering what the thermal curve of the material looks like. If the "soft spot" is lower, it might mean the whole temp curve is shifted downwards. But it really depends on the resin that's in it. Product page shows printing temp between 205 and 235C, which seems like a higher range normally recommended for most PLAs (at least the ones I use recommend 180-210)
@samtaylor4779
6 жыл бұрын
its probably to do with the heat transfer through the wood pulp being insulated. the sides in the transition zone cool down but the heat wants to rise so there would be a hard shell with a gooey centre in the transition zone then the filament gets rammed in and wedges the shell outwards and gets stuck the shell bakes the pla away and the wood fibres get concentrated in the nozzle
I LOVE the smell of wood and warm wood...
would like to see some finishing techniques tested on this filament , can you sand it ? what about the vapor melt method you use to smooth ? would a varnish destroy the pla side of the material ? would it even look good ? thanks for the video, lots of potential for this material
@MakersMuse

+Naduk Kerensky Good ideas for future videos! I've seen others apply stains and varnish, though it won't be affected by acetone as it's PLA based.

@Makers Muse I have tried three different types of "woodfill" filament so far, and all of them can, and have, jammed my hot ends. Like yourself, I have had to make many adjustments before I got Good prints.
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+jeevesme Yep, all the ones I've tried before this jammed in my 0.4mm nozzles. Filamentive still recommend a larger than 0.4mm nozzle, but I got it to work fine by ramping up the flow rate.
I agree, that looks fantastic.
Looks like a good filament. Have you tried this on the Up Mini?
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+04Stefan07 No chance this would work on my UP Mini, it'd chew it up within 5 minutes! It softens at far too low a temperature.
Now I can print my own firewood
But my shinny metal ass- Bender
It is to my understanding that you can use wood glue to fix holes
It seems this filament has almost no visible layers. Is this true? Or is it just from the camera?
@MakersMuse
7 жыл бұрын
Wood filled PLA hides the layers quite well due to its rough texture. They're still there, but a lot less obvious.
@MuckYu
7 жыл бұрын
Maker's Muse - Interesting! Can you recommend any other material that would have this "feature"? I am trying to go away from sanding and would much rather have almost-no layers and maybe just spray paint it if necessary. Currently did some tests with 0.06 mm layer prints which were quite nice but still not perfect enough for me.
why couldn't you lower the print temperature and ramp the speed back down to avoid the artifacts?
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+Brian Leach This wood filament has a fairly high extrusion temp requirement for PLA of 205-235deg C but still softens at quite a low temp - printing slower resulted in my extruder jamming hence why I ran faster. Better extruder designs would do a better job, the mk10 on the wanhao is a very low cost design.
You van use wood filler or whatever to get rid of the holes
Im very close to buying a printer. Do you know anything about Delta printers? Do you know if their accuracy is effected by size? (bigger delta printer = worse accurazy, or something like that). Great video by the way, subbed
@MakersMuse
8 жыл бұрын
+snelpiller Sorry I've got very limited experience with deltas! As with anything, the more movement components and the larger they are the more likely to affect accuracy, but same goes for Cartesian designs. It's worth keeping in mind also that delta's have a very unique print volume, it's circular and tapers towards the top - like a cone. Great for vases, not so great for large engineering parts.
