I spent time with Berne Hogarth. was in his class at Art Center in Pasadena in the late 80's. Berne Drew, among other things " Tarzan of the Apes" A long running Sunday comic strip the 60's. To watch him draw anotomy in his class was amazing. He had such a deep knowledge in his head. He was at first a tough teacher, but became a wonderful mentor. He was deeply interested in primative culture and ceremony. Here's to Berne, not forgotten!

Hogarth, Reilly & Bridgman are both a little hard to follow. However, they have a lot of knowledge to offer; once you understand their teaching methods. A little trick that helps: study along side Loomis & Hamm. Definitely add Hampton & Mattesi (Force) & it all begins to make a lot of sense. Your own feel for drawing anatomy & the figure, will indefinitely improve.

I have Hogarths book that I got back in 2007/2008 from Borders vookstore in NYC. His view of anatomy is good but I woupd personally recommend Glenn Villuppu, Karl Gnass, Steve Houston and even Mike Mattesi and also Watts Attelier for anatomy studies. If you have the funds, I recommend New Masters Art Academy year subscription, you get access to soo many experts in different fields, from painting, sculpting, landscape painting, nude studies, color theory, animal studies and mich more. They constantly update and add more.

Honestly the only books you really need are Loomis, Bridgman and Hogarth. These are the texts you would use at some of the universities, atleast I did when I was at the Chicago Art Institute, because of how concise they are about the materials and that each of the three were respective masters of their crafts amd the technical knowledge to be gained was beyond helpful.

Thank you very much for the comment. I agree with you on the point that if I could only get my hands on a single book, it would be Loomis or Bridgeman. My point in showing a variety is that I enjoy seeing how the different artistic approaches and techniques cross over and helps build a deeper understanding of anatomy while providing inspiration. The more books I can add to my library, the better.

Great video, very helpful to someone planing on buying books about drawing. I disagree on something though. Reading these books is NECESSARY if one wants to get real benefit from them. I'm an "artist" and an art teacher too. I've been drawing since as far as I can remember, and during my career I've been hitting very frustrating "plateaus". I saw how other artists kept progressing and doing things that no matter how hard I worked, I couldn't do. Until I understood that it was a matter of theory, and the best source of theory (to me at least) is books. See, the drawings show you the final result, which in the end is a still image. But the method lies within the text, it can only be explained verbally. Also, the text highlights aspects about line, rendering, body functionality, etc; things one wouldn't notice, especially the untrained eye. The "hows" and the "whys" are found in the text. Just sharing my own experience. Good luck to you!

Thank you so much for the insightful comment. This is exactly what I was hoping would be the result of my posting videos. I agree with you on the reading of the books if it is paired with the "deep practice" resulting from analyzing and drawing from the visuals. Reading art theory is great but in the end the exercise of drawing needs to be practiced to truly internalize. My first choice would be both. My second choice would be drawing only. My third choice would be reading only.

Loomis & Reilly are the best in my opinion. Hampton, Jones, Hamm & Mattesi are right below and lastly followed by Hogarth, Bridgman, ect. If you like Reilly... there's the "how to draw and paint anatomy & figure drawing for concept artists" as you shown (the later show's Reilly's drawing the body method - you may gave missed that," but you definitely want this book for drawing the head using Reilly's method: "How to Draw Portraits in Charcoal by Nathan Fowkes." Don't worry about the charcoal. You want this book! Patrick J. Jones 2 books: "Figures from Life & The Anatomy of Style," also have a little bit of Reilly's head drawing method in them. FYI... ImagineFX Magazine has a few issues that feature Loomis & Reilly's drawing methods done by Proko (for Loomis) & Fowkes for Reilly's head drawing method. Issue 158 March 2018 feature Proko & Fowkes with the Loomis & Reilly drawing methods respectively. There's at least 2 more issues & that book on the Reilly method is done by Fowkes through ImagineFX too 😉👍

@@diligentvisual2086 ... I might have to agree with you. It seems like you, I am also a enthusiast of great art books (to learn, reference from, ect.). I try & find videos on books like yours, to see what I may be missing. However, in this case... it seems we are both on the search for books regarding the Reilly method (particularly the head). They are hard to find because only his students, have really shown anything significant & it's always a little here & there, in books. You definitely want the book by "Fowkes," and anything he has done for ImagineFX (book or magazine issue). He is the best source, regarding Reilly. The book you have from ImagineFX "How to draw & Paint Anatomy," Fowkes is the main artist behind the Reilly drawings. However, Patrick J. Jones uses the Reilly too, though he doesn't mention Reilly by name. You can see the Reilly method in his drawings. Google him... he has a website with some stuff I'd like to buy, one of these days & his artwork is fantastic too. Btw... you're the only one to show the book by Kan Muftic "Figure Drawing for the Concept Artist." What a great book right! I think you missed this: Chapter 4, page 43. The Reilly method for drawing the body! Do you know how rare Reilly's method for drawing the body is, especially in a book? Almost impossible to find. Also... Chapter 5, starting on page 74 (I think) but, definitely on pages 84, 85, ect, you can tell Kan uses a mixture of Loomis & Reilly as his method for drawing heads. The beauty of Loomis & Reilly is that their methods can be combined. You also see this in Michael Hampton's book "Figure Drawing: Design & Intervention." So that's 3/4 books you want: Fowkes, Hampton & Pat J. Jones (he has 2 books - both are worth owning). Let me know when you get them & have at least skimmed through them. I can already imagine how happy you'll be. Fyi... they're going to cost 25 dollars on avg., new from amazon. They are worth every penny. Get new books. You're going to use them... a lot!

@@diligentvisual2086 ... hey mate, I just found a new book you're going to want. ImagineFX presents how to draw & paint Anatomy Ver.2. Its 20 at Amazon. What's new: Contains everything from our version book & the mag Ver.1 (same name with no "presents" in mag form) + Ver.2 of the magazine on how to draw & paint Anatomy (no book made). It's far more complete, still has Reilly, plus more Reilly & contains all the anatomy info that our book should have contained. At least they're getting it right the 2nd time around. It does annoy me to have to spend another 20 but, the additional info is fantastic. I have a copy of the Ver.2 magazine. It was photocopied so while you can see the images, it's very hard to read. You'll love the way Lemom drew the shoulders & back side. I've never seen the shoulders drawn this way, that makes it so detailed but, easy to understand, from any other anatomy or figure drawing book to date. Between the shoulders & the Reilly info, I know you'll want this book. Merry xmas mate 😉👍

For more advanced I rec Creative Illustration by Loomis. Tbh if a student studies those 3 books intensively and copies all the pages & does the exercises, they'll prob be able to freelance, assuming they pick up some digital & maybe throw in an environment or industrial design book or 2 along the way

I bought the Hogarth one. I later gave it to a fellow artist who mentioned he was considering buying it. I never found value in his illustrations. They look like ping-pong and tennis balls stuffed in tube socks. I also have Drawing the Marvel Way, all of George Bridgman’s, all Andrew Loomis’ books, and How to Draw and Paint Anatomy from various artists. I have 10 more but, I highly recommend these four for anatomy. Loomis seems to be the more complete as his books have more usable information to aid the beginning illustrator. It’s really nice to see someone appreciate the books I chose when I was young and broke. Every dollar had to count. Overall, a great video. Thanks for sharing!!!

Bridgman's Complete Guide "5th Edition" (includes all of his books), is by far, the best edition. It's much easier to understand, for those whom are new to his work/books & old alike. They even have "red ink text," & numbers to indicate what Bridgman is writing about in his artwork. Even if you're not reading & copying as you described (I copy & read), this edition is the best so far. It's 15-16 dollars. You want this edition, even if you own the 4th edition.

Copying is fine. Of course, if you're learning art with the intent of applying it, you should copy the stuff in the books to learn them. But the text is equally important, cause it breaks down the picture and helps you understand what's happening in it faster than you'd learn by trying to understand the stuff yourself.

@@diligentvisual2086 Are you saying that Theory and Simplying anatomy in an artistic way is better? (well obviously it is better lol). I already have books thou, i was just saying that in the internet everybody can find pictures of anatomy, but as you said that's not all: I noticed something about anatomy books for artists....is that they present you various ideas/theories, and how to draw them in an artistic way, rather than just giving you 2 views of some part of the body, and full detailed unnecesary names of intricate parts of the body.

The book "How to Draw and Paint Anatomy," it looks like it's got thin glossy paper like magazines. Or does it have thick paper?

This book was published by ImagineFX magazine. The format, paper stock and finish is the same as their magazines.

in case you all want to check these books out and you don't have the cash, check out libgen. It's not very legal, but artists break the law all the time. By all means, go ahead, homies.

If your going to copy from a book spend two days copying the same image over and over taking breaks every 20 to 30 min. Don't forget to eat. Get good sleep. In the end you'll be able to draw that image from your imagination.

Thar Chandran That is funny. I kind of get what you mean though. Something about the rendering of form makes them kind of alien or unnatural.

@@diligentvisual2086 Hey sorry I didn't see your reply! Yeah, it's something to do with the rendering. I've heard the same thing from Marshall Vandruff too, not him personally but one of the ladies in his classes. On the plus side, Hogarth is exceptionally knowledgeable when it comes to anatomy! He can cut the body in ANY direction and tell you how it looks like from any angle.
